Refuge Knitting thread (mainly blanket-based)

Right, this is a continuation of the main Refuge blanket thread.

We have at least one blanket project, but also droitwich fancies a go at a bear.

The currently proposed blanket project is my 'Bossy Boots Blanket', i.e. I want the organisation finished as soon as poss because I don't have a lot of time for new projects this autumn. However, there can certainly be a less bossy project as well, in different yarn and colours as people desire.

So far, definitely signed up for the Bossy Boots Blanket are:

  • me
  • NeitherShreddedNorSmug
  • HairyPotter
  • stressedHEMum

and I think BarbaraWoodlouse.

Now, we're planning to do double-sized squares just because we can, which means we only need 6 for the smaller sized blanket. However, if more people want to do a BossyBoots Blanket they can do (but they need to say so soon, otherwise they are in the Less Bossy Blanket Project).

Bossy Boots Blanket will be in Paton's Smoothie DK in Lime (1010) and Cream (1019). Note Smoothie is a 100g ball so you won't need much - indeed you could get away with one ball I would think.

Each square will have 5 rows of garter stitch top and bottom, and 5 (ish) stitches in garter for the edges. The squares will be planned together so the blanket has an overall look (this is what I mean about the level of bossiness) and once I have confirmation on the numbers we can decide what we want to do. The preference is for simple, which is good, so garter stitch, perhaps the Team Heart, but nothing more complicated than that. I intend to sew this one up myself. I'm also happy to put in a general order for the yarn and then distribute it as each knitter isn't going to need that much.

Other knitters who have expressed a preference (some of whom I have PMed but not heard back from yet).

DutchOma has offered to sew up another blanket.
tinierclanger [I've PMed you twice, clanger, but not heard anything back]
droitwichmummy - doing a teddy

Please do not feel you have to join in with the BossyBoots Blanket. There will be enough knitters for a Less Bossy Blanket, and I'm happy to do a couple of 15cm squares for that myself. However, if you do want to do the BossyBoots Blanket please now say so, so that we can plan and anyone who wants to can get cracking, whilst noting that Shredded is waiting on her yarn arriving (and I have about 75 other projects on at the same time Confused).

Hope this helps - there's no need to keep copying and pasting the list of who is on Team Knit on this thread.

My square is finished . Shall I start another one? I have both colours, having obviously cornered the world market and will await instructions Smile.

Barbara - sorry to hear of your car breakdown.

Trib - I like the idea of a pillar box red jacket for your DS.

tribpot · 26/09/2012 21:58

Now Shredded you were meant to be super-busy with work. Not knitting up a flipping storm! I think start another if you would like, at this rate I will end up using my contraband Smoothie, smuggled over the border [from Scotland] for sewing up only Wink

I went for the Wendy Mode in Chilli Pepper which was just slightly less screaming a red than the Scarlet.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 27/09/2012 12:20

Nice red trib!

OK, I will start another green square. I have been working so hard I went to bed at 8pm last night and slept for 11 hours Shock.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 27/09/2012 12:59

Mmmm. Sleep... [jealous]

That jacket will look lovely in the red Trib. I'm very much hoping you will make a start on the dino blanket soon too and let me know whether I have half a chance of completing it successfully. I'm considering you my canary Grin

Spent last night casting on too many stitches. Will get it right tonight or die trying.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 27/09/2012 13:09

Barbara, what pattern are you going to do? I had the same problem of too many stitches to start with. I ended up with 61 if that helps.

tribpot · 27/09/2012 14:31

Barbara - I'm on the case of the dino blanket, just waiting for the pattern to be released! I need some colours that aren't quite so .. orange though (given poor ds' bedroom is still painted the deep purple it was when we moved in 5 years ago).

DH has texted rather sourly 'a sheep sized bale of wool has arrived'.

OP posts:
NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/09/2012 02:58

Grin at trib's DH.

My team heart plan didn't work out, so I'm now part way through the dishcloth pattern I posted last weekend, with the eyelets up the middle.

tribpot · 29/09/2012 08:54

I've been having a go at a reversible pattern called Stockholm although I've done it on needles which are much smaller than the pattern calls for. I think it might be a bit too lacy rather than textured?

So I'm thinking about having a go at Pavillion instead.

OP posts:
BarbaraWoodlouse · 29/09/2012 12:01

Finally got my sizing right (64 stitches for me, I am - as previously confessed - a tight knitter Grin) and am about a quarter of the way through a basic but (I think) successful diaganol rib.

Love the lettuce Shredded. It's in my queue, for what purpose I know not.

Pavillion looks great Trib

How are the other BB's (Bossy Blanketeers) getting on? Smile

tribpot · 29/09/2012 13:40

Progress on Pavillion.

Sadly it's about 3cm too small. 46 stitches. I am as loose as Barbara is tight Wink

It's an 18 stitch pattern so obviously an extra repeat isn't a goer, even if I went down to 3.25mm needles. Equally, now I've had a crack at it I could probably extend it partially myself with a bit of Excel jiggery pokery, it's not like a design that is quite obviously a certain number of stitches, if you see what I mean.

On the other hand, in the spirit of diagonals, I could do the design from the Prismatic scarf (love this) or the mistake rib? Is that what you're doing, Barbara?

HairyPotter · 29/09/2012 14:05

I have wool Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

One last square left to do for my little hug and then im ready to get going with this one.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/09/2012 22:13

Yay Hairy! (and well done on the little hug too)

trib - I like the prismatic scarf pattern. I hadn't realised about the diagonals until you mentioned it.

Barbara - how are you doing?

If someone were to make the pieces for a bear, would there be anyone willing or able to sew it up and stuff it? Just wondering...

I have also accidentally started a granny stripe blanket in the cream smoothie Smile

BarbaraWoodlouse · 30/09/2012 11:23

I think my refuge square is on my profile now.

It's [[http://www.halfknits.com/knitting-6-inch-block-patterns/ this one].

Super easy unless you lose your place as it takes a while for the rib to show itself so it's murder to find yourself again. Not that this has ever happened to me. Oh no

BarbaraWoodlouse · 30/09/2012 11:24

Doh. Couldn't get preview to work.

this one.

tribpot · 30/09/2012 11:49

Nice work, Barbara!

I went with a diagonal pattern based on these socks which has come out like this.

The mistake rib didn't seem to be coming out on the diagonal!! Will maybe have to try that one again. The prismatic might be a bit fussy with carrying the yarn across three stitches on the front.

Shredded - alas, I couldn't commit to putting a bear together but I wonder if a sewer who wanted to help out on the Refuge project might oblige? Maybe put a call out on the main thread or on Arts & Crafts generally?

OP posts:
NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 30/09/2012 13:12

Nice work ladies!

I was about to cast off, when I noticed a mistake and had to frog about 30 rows I have almost caught up with myself, but it did mean that my thoughts of doing a bear may have to go on the back burner - this is my last weekend before I start an OU course and lose all my free time for the next 6 months

droitwichmummy · 30/09/2012 23:11

Neither - I could stuff & stitch a bear for someone if they pm'd me. Just saying ...

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 01/10/2012 00:27

Smile drotwich. Thank you. I'll see how I get on this week and PM you if it looks like it's going to happen.

HairyPotter · 01/10/2012 08:40

Morning. Brew

I'm off out first thing but then I will get started. here are the squares for my little hug would any ones there suit this blanket? As you can see, I'm not the greatest knitter but I think they are ok just

tribpot · 01/10/2012 11:39

Hairy, they're all very cute. We've ended up with a bit of a one-colour, textured theme going on, with the emphasis on diagonals. I think any of the ones in the corners would work particularly well, although I like the diamonds on the middle right. Is the one in the top left a slanty pattern?

OP posts:
HairyPotter · 01/10/2012 13:12

Yes, I think it might be called a Turkish Rib? might not be mind you it was pretty quick to knit and I quite like the way it looks. I had thought about doing the diamonds as well, so happy to do either.

Are we doing a 5 row 5 stitch garter border? What size needles?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 01/10/2012 13:24

Hairy, they are lovely squares!

Yes to 5 stitches/5 rows. I used 4mm needles as that is all I have

tribpot · 01/10/2012 14:01

Yup, I used 4mm as well although the size is the thing.

Is it this one? Word of caution - this is very, very stretchy, but should be okay inside a 5 stitch border. You might want to bung a 5 stitch border up the middle as well just to stabilise it further.

OP posts:
BarbaraWoodlouse · 01/10/2012 23:09

Just cast off my diagonal rib Smile

Are we in need of any more squares for this blanket? If not I can knit the remains into a little hug so happy either way.

tribpot · 02/10/2012 07:42

Well done Barbara! Well, Shredded is sending two, Hairy has one on the needles. We haven't heard from stressedHEmum for a while but I think she has a granite stitch one on the needles. And I've done one. So by rights I think we should have enough but why don't you do another one? I don't want to leave you short for a mini-hug, though. Esp as it's beginning to look like lime and green Smoothie is in short supply!
