Very important - button tin...

It's my birthday today and my wonderful dp has got me a mixed bag of buttons (from Duttons for buttons Grin). I love them but now need to find the perfect button tin.

It needs to be round, not too big (a Celebrations tin would be too big) and just right..

Any suggestions?! I don't mind buying a tin of something (anything!) if it's the right tin!

Thank you Smile

It has to be glass because its bad luck to rummage around in a tin of buttons!

Blimey with the amount of old wives on MN I would have thought that was common knowledge Grin

nickelDorritt · 15/02/2012 16:00

it's not bad luck!
You have to tip the buttons onto the rug.

SoupDragon · 15/02/2012 16:31

One happy day in the summer, I needed buttons for DS1s school blazer. My mother came over with her button tin and we rummaged in hers and mine. Going through hers was like a trip down memory lane... [sigh]

Didn't find the blazer buttons, I had to go and buy though [shrug]

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 15/02/2012 17:18

Oh yes its fine if you tip them out but you must never stick your hand in and rummage

Saltire · 15/02/2012 17:20

There used to be an advert on tv which had buttons moving around to make a bird or something - I used to shake whenever it came on and turn over the channel

ajandjjmum · 15/02/2012 17:23

I have a button tin - I think it was from Cath Kidson. Only it's small and rectangular. Just showing someone the other day!

RustyBear · 15/02/2012 20:21

Well, I definitely used to rummage, Mrs DV! And as an old wife who has had more than her fair share of good luck over the last five decades, I don't believe a word of it.

Unless of course, you use your button tin to store pins as well. Now that could get nasty.....

DottyDot · 16/02/2012 09:34

Aah - button and button tin lovers everywhere! (sorry Saltire) Grin

My bid on ebay ends soon for a most lovely button tin + lots of buttons. Am ridiculously giddy about it and will probably end up bidding way too much slightly more than I should just to secure it...

And it definitely has to be a tin - whoever heard of keeping buttons in a jar you freaks?

Saltire - and Button Moon must give you hives! Grin

I won the bid!! Grin.

link? Grin

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 17/02/2012 14:27

If they are in a tin how can you see them?
How can you gaze upon their beauty and loveliness if they are imprisoned in a metal box?

The very idea Hmm

nickelDorritt · 17/02/2012 14:27

you tip them out!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 17/02/2012 14:50

You tin heads just dont get it do you?

If they are in jars you can just look at them.
Plus you get to colour code them.

nickelDorritt · 17/02/2012 14:54

it's bad luck to have them in a glass jar!

Plus, you could break the jar and then where would you be?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 17/02/2012 14:57

You get another one rolls eyes

Honestly you lot are mad Hmm

Grin
DottyDot · 17/02/2012 15:13

OK, the buttons look a bit plain, but it was the tin I wanted - my grandma had exactly this tin when I was little so I got all nostalgic....! It might be an interim tin until I find the one, but we'll see Grin

ooh and I think I've put a picture of my lovely birthday buttons on my profile. Possibly. Or I'll give it a go anyway... Smile

I can't open your ebay link.
but i like the buttons on your profile! Grin

Pootles2010 · 17/02/2012 15:23

Oh i do love Duttons. Are you in York OP? Whenever my mum visits we must have a trip to duttons - dp does not get it AT ALL!

DottyDot · 17/02/2012 15:36

aww that's a shame - will take a photo when it arrives! I'm in Manchester but took a trip with dp to Harrogate last November, where we discovered the wonderful Duttons - and I'm all for a new obsession so this was perfect... Grin

You know they have a website, right?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 17/02/2012 16:17

Ok this isnt about buttons but I thought you lot might understand.
I have just made a (far to early) bid on the most perfect, scrummy vintage dressmaker's dummy.

I just know its going to go far out of my price range but its perfect and its within picking up distance.

AND I WANT IT!!!

Pudden · 17/02/2012 16:30

ooh I'm off to York next month; will be dribbling over the fudge shop and buttons...

ODAMDV...linky please..I like dressmakers dummies as well. Did you ever see Cold Comfort Farm when it was on telly? Joanna Lumleys' character collects fancy underwear and displays them on 'dressforms' ...fab :o

SoupDragon · 17/02/2012 16:38

Ebay link

We used to have that tin for buttons too - or very similar. It was swapped for a gold cake tin and it isn't the same.

Saltire · 17/02/2012 16:39

You mean to tell me that there's a whole shop dedicated to selling those ....things.. in York
