Mumsnet Bunting Project

OnlyWantsOne · 27/06/2011 10:29

My friend's village has a "bunting project"

everyone in the village is making one bit, or a few bits, and then they are all being put together by some little old lady and used to decorate their new community centre.

I thought it might be nice (if there are any takers?) to do a MN BUNTING?

we could then donate it - give it - auction it between MN'rs and give proceeds to a charity?

I'd love to organise it, and attach all the bloody bits together

so who wants to do a triangle?

Any one want to help me organise it? Dimensions of the triangles?

We should decorate the triangle with some thing personal and special to you, obv you have to be happy to have it seen (and owned) by some one else?

Any one up for it?

NorksAreMessy · 03/07/2011 19:54

Include me in, too, please

moominthecorner · 03/07/2011 20:01

What's the deadline pls?

EggyAllenPoe · 08/07/2011 14:00

ok so...

this fabric i like- is that the kind of cotton print that makes a good bunt?

i realise i'd have to choose the right cutting points.

or something like this? which is plainer but possibly could take some applique...or similar?

?thoughts?

plain cotton with applique? what weight of cotton? do we have a colour scheme to adhere to??

i'm just all questions today.

sittinghippo · 08/07/2011 14:12

Ooh nice fabrics Eggy!
I think the general gist of it is is whatever we fancy, so it is a reflection of all our different tastes. There is no colour scheme but I think the bunt should be double sided.

I made a prototype, am now putting more thought into it and am going to applique on one side.

And moomin I think deadline is 30th July, but as that is looming I think it may get extended.

I have been wondering onlywantsone whether Winstons Wish was settled on?

KnottyLocks · 08/07/2011 14:59

Eggy, your second fabric choice made me Grin. Go nicely with your camping gear!

We've settled on Winston's Wish for the blanket raffle once we've sorted all the legal side.

Not sure about the bunting though. What about PMing OnlyWantsOne, Sittinghippo?

SoloAgainItSeems · 08/07/2011 15:30

Ooooh! If I can dig my sewing machine out, I will make one or two too! Might put my MN nn on it.

RatherBeOnThePea · 08/07/2011 16:14

I've just been reminded of this, I'm not the craftiest but aspire to be Hmm and I actually do have a sewing machine...

The question is, is this beyond me Knotty?

KnottyLocks · 08/07/2011 16:58

Piste, not at all. Honest. Cut two triangles.(diagram up there somewhere ^) Put right sides together. Sew up the two long sides. Turn the right way around. Iron. Done. See?

EggyAllenPoe · 08/07/2011 19:05

i am sufficiently un-crafty to not know how to sew my own sewing machine, and therefore stitch everything...

It is a nice cheery fabric. i do like it. and i could keep the remnant for campingy things....

RatherBeOnThePea · 08/07/2011 19:05

I could so do that Knotty..... I could actually contribute to a project instead of just loitering Grin and getting in the way Blush

I'm going to read everything on this thread and then tomorrow I am going to find my sewing machine.... I may have to practice first!

OWO - I really will try to send you a coupla that are acceptable......

Wish me luck everyone....

CadleCrap · 09/07/2011 11:52

Oh! Do we only sew up the long sides? I've sewn across the top as well.

Do I have to unpick?

KnottyLocks · 09/07/2011 13:17

We need OWO here! I'll drop her a PM.

Cadle, I would say that would be fine...should work either way.

I made my instructions as simple as possible for Piste Wink

CadleCrap · 09/07/2011 13:28

Are we top stitching?

OnlyWantsOne · 09/07/2011 13:30

Knotty thank you for the PM

I shall try and answer some questions

eggyallen any colour you like, and fabric - it will be a complete jumble of tastes and style

knotty we havent settled for WW - MNHQ have to get back to me still

sittinhippo is perfectly right its meant to be "whatever we fancy, so it is a reflection of all our different tastes"

cadlecrap dont unpick, dont fret - the top seam will be hidden any way - between the fold of the cotton bunting tape

^you are all doing amazingly well, we can extend the deadline til end of August if thats better - sorry Ive been AWOL Ive been feasting on twitter and ignoring mn as its full of loons

any more questions or problems, just ask - If i go AWOL again, feel free to PM me x

ChristinedePizan · 09/07/2011 13:31

On OWO's blog post she linked to, she says it's up to individual bunters to decide if they want to sew up the top :)

I'm quite tempted to do this - if my sewing machine arrives before the end of the month! I might have a go at some appliqué Hmm

ChristinedePizan · 09/07/2011 13:31

Sorry x-posted Blush

RatherBeOnThePea · 09/07/2011 17:57

...and bless you Knotty, I really do need simple instructions. All this talk of appliqué makes me feel Confused though!

Well I had a very nice time this afternoon looking at fabric as we crafty people like to call it, there is such nice stuff, I spent ages. My boys were a bit picky though and got a teensy bit grumpy. DH actually said that if I'm going to get into craft, could it not be home baking

I talked to a very nice fabric shop lady too, who told me how much 13 inches were in centimetres, and she loved the sound of the bunting project. There is a whole new world of crafty people out there for me Smile

So, I shall get practising and hopefully OWO I shall have something to send. I am actually very excited Grin I presume come the hour, someone will tell me where to send my efforts?!

EggyAllenPoe · 09/07/2011 18:00

when i think of applique my method would be
) buy a pre-made one
2) sew/iron it on.

Smile

that still constitutes applique, right?

RatherBeOnThePea · 09/07/2011 18:06

Eggy, as I am a Craftie now, I can comment, and say yes without a doubt that is appliqué.....

< I actually know nothing>
