High Nucal fold thickness

We've just had our 20 week scan and was told that he has a higher than average Nuchal fold thickness of 7.3mm. Everything else looks normal and healthy and they examined his heart extensively and nothing looks out of the ordinary. We have done the NIPT test and just waiting on results but I am just so scared of what the outcome will be, the not knowing is torture. I've also not felt much movement yet, and felt no kicks at all. Could this be a link? Or am I just being extra paranoid? Has anybody else got any experience with this?

@SamK93 I don't think you ever actually expect something like this to happen though so I don't blame you for not wanting the screening tests. Maybe see if you could get them done now? I'm not sure if there's a deadline for getting them done or not but worth asking. The NIPT test was so much better for us. Just a simple blood test but you do have to wait a little longer for the results than you do with the amnio.

You're definitely not stupid for thinking that! I went through so many emotions, it really takes a toll on your mental state! I definitely thought I was going mad. How is your partner taking the news, is he being supportive? I know it's so so hard but you really have to try and stay positive, everything else is looking in your favour❤️

I will definitely look into the tests for sure once I know what's happening. It's the fear of the unknown right now that's driving me mad. Because of covid he wasn't allowed in with me which just made the whole thing so much worse for me, so when I got into the car I was trying to explain it to him but I don't think he really understands what's happening he just said don't stress until you know what's what. So I haven't spoken to him about it after that. I tried to speak to my mum about it and she said ohh we didn't have all that in our day it'll be fine, which didn't really help at all.

Hi all, hope everything is still OK for you all x
Avocadontoast, sorry not sure how to tag, how's things going with you? I have another scan on Thursday, all is still looking OK, they want to keep an eye on babys weight as at 28 weeks he was 2lb 2, just on the 10th percentile so I'm 30 weeks now and will have another growth scan Thursday and go from there, I hope he's put a little more weight on thou.
Hi Sam hope today goes well for you also, I check back on these sites most days for updates, this app has kept me going and stopping me go crazy with thoughts hearing people in the same boat, I never even knew about these kinds of problems in my other pregnancies but have learnt so much this time around x

SamK93 · 22/06/2020 12:13

Hi @Missy38 hope everything goes well for you, I had a call from fetal med this morning they've booked me for a scan on Thursday x

Missy38 · 22/06/2020 13:03

Ah brill let us know how it goes, mines Thursday too x

Missy38 · 25/06/2020 15:11

Hi Sam, hope everything went OK on today's scan, mine was good, baby is 3lbs 7 at 30+1 on the 50th percentile now

SamK93 · 25/06/2020 16:55

Hi @Missy38 I'm glad your appointment went well, I had mine earlier, the consultant said the nuchal fold is measuring at 6.8mm so no increase, he checked everything else, everything else was normal. He said that he thinks its low risk the baby will have downs taking into consideration my age etc and no other markers. Obviously there's always a chance, and it was up to me if I wanted further tests but he was happy with how things were looking. So I think i feel okay with not having any more tests and just see what happens really x

Missy38 · 25/06/2020 17:05

Ah that's good news, sounds very similar to mine also in what we decided, glad all is OK for you

redshift1 · 26/06/2020 20:19

@SamK93 so glad there was no bad news. How're you feeling now? xx

Hi thank you so much @redshift1 @Missy38

I'm feeling a lot more positive about it all, this is what the consultant wrote on the back of my report. I'm actually considering maybe having the NIPT? I don't know. I know DH said there's no point but maybe I'd feel more at ease knowing for sure then I can prepare for the outcome either way. Or am I just being silly?

If your able to to the NIPT test go for it, its a simple blood test and at least will put your mind at ease a little bit better as it did for me massively x

redshift1 · 27/06/2020 21:40

@SamK93 I'm glad you're feeling more positive. If it was me I would have the NIPT. It's just another thing to put your mind at rest and you can then go on to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy without it in the back of your mind wondering what if

Hi @redshift1 @Missy38

Just wanted to update you both, after thinking it through all weekend I called the hospital yesterday morning and got my NIPT done today. I just thought, it's been offered to me I'd be silly not to take it. I'll update you both in a couple of weeks with results x

redshift1 · 30/06/2020 22:02

@SamK93 that's good they offered it to you! Is it on the NHS to? I think you definitely made the right decision and it's definitely put your mind at rest Thanks how're you feeling now? Xx

OP posts:
SamK93 · 30/06/2020 22:06

@redshift1 when I went to see the midwife she did say they don't usually offer the NIPT this way as it's not usually funded by the NHS but because the consultant had offered it to me, they did let me have it. She seemed nice and reassuring, I feel okay, will just try not to think about it until I get the results.

How have you been getting on with newborn life?! ❤️

Missy38 · 30/06/2020 22:17

Thats good you decided to have it, i was lucky and had my results in 5 days, will be thinking of you x

Missy38 · 30/06/2020 22:23

Hi both again, I've just realised something, my problem was with the nuchal translucency (fluid behind baby neck but disappeared at 24 weeks, yours is nuchal fold? What is the difference 🤔

Missy38 · 30/06/2020 22:25

* disappeared at 14 weeks not 24 sorry *

SamK93 · 01/07/2020 13:04

Hi @Missy38 I think it's the same thing they're looking at, measured at different stages though so hence the difference names. Both indicate the same things though.

SamK93 · 16/07/2020 17:18

Hi @Missy38 @redshift1

I received my NIPT results today, they came back low risk xx

Missy38 · 16/07/2020 17:35

redshift1 · 16/07/2020 23:06

Newborn life is amazing!!! It's been so strange with the whole covid situation but has also been nice being able to spend so much time with him without the stress of visitors! He's 3 months now and I just can't believe how quick it's going! When is your due date?
