to be totally confussed about Yoghurt!

Can someone please just tell me what the best make of Yoghurt is for children! I am totally confussed and have no idea anymore! Sugar free, no artificial colours/flavours etc etc etc

Apparently little stars and the work of the devil??

Yes, low sugar/no sugar but what does it matter which brand?

If it's a source of calcium, who really cares?

YOGHURT BETTER THAN FROMAGE FRAIS, LESS SUGAR ADDED i THINK

JUST LOOK AT THE LABELS AND COMPARE FAT/SUGAR ETC?

buy plain yoghurt and add own fruit or puree?, or some honey

Greek, I like the yeo valley one or the total one. DS likes it just fine or with some nuts and honey.

No honey if baby under 12 months.

If I am feeling "good" I buy plain yeo valley and mush up some banana to go in it. My dds love sweet stuff but will eat plain yogurt with some sweet fruit.

Otherwise I buy what is on offer. Rachels or Yeo Valley is personal preference. However imo even muller is ok. (just avoid the ones with extra crushed up chocolate biscuit/chocolate cornflakes etc unless they are for you!)

ooh ooh I know this one!! amazingly (i think) Sainsbury own-brand fromage frais don't have any sugar or sweeteners - they are the ONLY brand i've found which uses only fruit to sweeten. And they're perfectly sweet enough. it always makes me laugh when i see that riDICulous advert with all the mums being told on the 'yogurt-pot telephone lines' that all mums use that little stars don;t have any artificial flavourings or additives. No, just LOADS OF SUGAR!

Thanks ladies. Is sugar really that bad for kids, is it really to be avoided at all costs!? I kind of think the less chemicals the better but it has to taste good!

No, of course not, but if you can avoid it, by giving something that's just as nice, why not? Then you can feel less guilty about giving them a treat another time.

just been doing some research in the fridge for you

the fromage frais we have in for DS (thomas ones, tiny pots) have 12 g of sugar per 100g

a heaped teaspoon is about 5g

that is quite a lot of sugar if they are eating lots of them, on top of everything else sweet they eat

and YES sugar is very bad for LOs teeth

I don't think sugar is that evil.

DS has those yeo valley tubes in his lunch box everyday and sometimes if I am feeling nice I get him the other brand that has Transformers (or something or other on it), they probably have sugar in there, but (bad mother emoticon), I haven't actually looked...

He is in pretty good nick.

DS loves any natural / greek yog, isn't particularly bothered if I add fruit or not.

I buy big pots and spoon portions into a bowl for him instead of buying the tiny, overpriced 'baby' sugar loaded ones.

Back when I had one PFB I used to buy natural yogurt and mix in lovingly prepared fruit purees. Now I'm pregnant with number 3 they have whatever is on offer. I did try going back to natural yogurt but they'd got too much of a taste for the sweet stuff and wouldn't eat it!

At the moment they are having Yeo Valley Yogurt Tube thingys as they're on offer in Asda. Othertimes it's sugar laden Frubes.

I don't avoid sugar at all costs, I just try and keep it to a minimum. My DCs (nearly 4 and 2.7) really love Mueller crunch corners snack size. The biscuity things and yogurt are sugary, but at least there is more redemption than a straight up biscuit, so if they have that for their pudding now and then, it's not a huge issue.

DS thinks those smarties things are the be all and end all of desserts. I find it helps to keep their expectations low.

Plain wholemilk yoghurt is best, supermarket own brand fine. Add fruit yourself.

My DS loves plain greek yoghurt too. Sometimes I add fruit and then he thinks it is a treat and says "ooooh"

If you want fruity ones with no sugar the Plum and Rachels brands do baby yoghurts/fromage frais that are just yoghurt/fromage frais plus puree - they taste good.

Nah- wholemilk plain yog is really creamy and nice.
Yeo Valley do a nice organic one, but really own brand is fine.

I find the plain yoghurt sharp and don't really like it although dd does so i make my own yoghurt now which is really creamy so i eat it too. And its alot cheaper too (although obviously i paid for the yoghurt maker )

I buy natural yoghurt and add treats. My dcs like to make up their own reciepes with fruit,nuts and seeds. And jam - they like jam.

Rachel's, Plum and now some Yeo yoghurts don't have sugar. I look at the ingredients list and buy especially when there are special offers.

Yes, get the sweetened with fruit puree or juice ones if you are worried! It's still sugar but not refined sugar.

I know that natural / greek is best but mine won't eat it. I view it like any other 'treat' tbh so all things in moderation is the motto in the house of biddy & I just watch the total amount of refined sugar overall.
