Stuck Milkshake on this morning for first time in ages. Had a clip of Thomas and Friends. Was absolutely gobsmacked to see that Thomas the Tank Engine is now done in CGI!!!!!

Well fuck me, having watched Thomas for years as my brothers and me watched it when we were kids, DSS (nearly 9) also loved it when he was a toddler and now DS is also a fan.

I just adored all the sets they did with the buildings, and tiny plants, and animals and all the little attention to detail that was put in just to shoot a 20min long episode. Always struck me as a real labour of love.

Now I don't hate CGI, love the likes of Pixar et al, but I think something is lost when you have shows like Thomas & Noddy and the rest move from stop animation to CGI. Just seems like a budget saving cop out

Ah well at least there is good old Wallace and Gromit (DS loves the Wererabbit one!) and Chicken Run.

the thomas music has changed as well it used to be more clangy - i hate the new music.

cakeywakey · 03/02/2010 16:55

You are being nostalgic and seeing Thomas through rose-tinted specs. It's not wrong, just different.

TBH, I prefer the newer stories, they've got a little more zip to them than the older ones. We've bought DD some of the CD book as I just can't bear reading the stories - they're so farking dull!

BouncingTurtle · 03/02/2010 16:55

The voices are totally different too, Ringo did get replaced, but with someone similarly gravelly voiced.

I agree BouncingTurtle - seeing their mouths move is very wrong. There is a charm about something that is still done the old fashioned way - but then I'm an old fuddy duddy

Booyhoo · 03/02/2010 16:56

i loved the old style thomas and noddy. yes it is veryvery wrong but seems to be the way all of the animated shows are going.

lambanana · 03/02/2010 16:57

They have done the same with fireman sam! Although they do still show the old ones but not the v v old ones my 20 year old son used to watch.

Not my cuppa tea at all.

overmydeadbody · 03/02/2010 16:57

yabu

things change, it's a sign you're getitng old when you find yourself going on about the 'good old days'

ruddynorah · 03/02/2010 16:57

well it has chuggington to compete with now.

ShowOfHands · 03/02/2010 16:58

Postman Pat has a helicopter and emails, the country's broken. Brown's fault of course.

Pat still crap at his job though. Can't polish a turd.

BouncingTurtle · 03/02/2010 16:59

Ilovespinach - we shall be old fuddyduddies together

DS also loves Chuggington as well, which irritates the pants off me. Trains do not jump around on the rails, no do they FLY

But yes, it is the way of the world

God imagine if Michael "Fucking" Bey ever remade Jason and the Argonauts... what a utter catastrophe that would be - all CGI explosions

Yeah never ceases to amaze me how Pat's special delivery service only just about makes it on time, and is sometimes late! I'd be going mental at him!

Your face probably looked like me when i found out postman pat was married with a son

TabithaTwitchet · 03/02/2010 17:06

YANBU, it is very wrong indeed . As is the new Postman Pat.

DD has the videos of the original Thomas and P.Pat, and she loves them.

Fuddy Duddy and Proud of it!

Dirtgirl · 03/02/2010 17:09

I was sad when they changed it. DS loves Thomas and I used to think the models were quite good.

SolidGoldBrass · 03/02/2010 17:17

Oi, lay off Chuggington, it's fab (though possibly my interest in the mechanics is a bit, erm, unhealthy).

crankytwanky · 03/02/2010 20:00

lol SoH!

My postman was like Pat. He wanted to know what was in my parcels. He never asked outright, but would kind of turn them in his hands with a look on his face like a chimp who's just shat in his own hand, until I offered an explanation. I should have told him "ooh it's the gimp mask I ordered from Holland" or some such.

He retired at Christmas, and I miss him.

But I digress. YANBU. There's nothing to separate Thomas from his "down-market competitors" if he too becomes CGI.

BendyBob · 03/02/2010 20:06

Hm not sure. I remember the Flowerpot Men and Andy Pandy - strings and all.

I think an upgrade is ok in some cases but by jimminy if they ever try and improve on the Clangers, or touch any Oliver Postgate programmes they'll be trouble from me. Some things are sacred!

lefroglet · 03/02/2010 20:36

I'm pretty sure that they are going to change Bob the Builder from stop motion to CGI too, think I saw that on BBC Breakfast ages ago. I do confess to preferring Chuggington over Thomas (old or new) - after having to watch it incessantly when my brother was into I have a slight aversion to it!

violincjj · 03/02/2010 20:43

You do know what to call Postman Pat when he's been made redundant?

...PAT

They have done the same with fireman sam! Although they do still show the old ones but not the v v old ones my 20 year old son used to watch.

There was a fabulous thing in the Guardian a few weeks ago talking about Fireman Sam, saying that PontyPandy Fire station should definitely be "rationalised" as all they ever did was rescue Norman Price who frankly should have been brought the the attention of Social Services.

EmilyStrange · 03/02/2010 20:48

YABU because Thomas is deadly dull and a curse on mothers everywhere whatever format it is viewed in.

weegiemum · 03/02/2010 20:50

Our kids also like to sing the "alternative" words to the Postman Pat theme tune (much to delight and joy of their three year old cousin and a good bit of cats bum mouth from my SIL!)

Postman Pat, Postman Pat
Postman Pat ran over his cat
Blood and guts went flying
Postman Pat was crying
You've never seen a cat as flat as that!

Everybody knows he wears his sisters clothes
All his friends will smile as he waves to greet them!

(at this point dd1, who learned the second verse at school, dissolves into such hysterical laughter (she once actually threw up) that we have never found out how it ends ......)

Wolliw · 03/02/2010 20:52

YABU it was made for small children, not you.
I'm just greatful for rolling kids tv, rather than the hour or two after school that we got as kids.

smokinaces · 03/02/2010 20:54

DS1 (3.5) wont watch the "new" Fireman Sam, Thomas or Postman Pat. He calls them rubbish and the "bad ones". Thank god for DVDs of the originals

Coldhands · 03/02/2010 20:59

YANBU. I hate the new Thomas, I too loved the model railways and stuff. My DS doesn't seem to care either way, he loves Thomas. I hate the fact that they have to have the trains blinking all the time, and yes the mouths moving is so wrong.
