Stuck Milkshake on this morning for first time in ages. Had a clip of Thomas and Friends. Was absolutely gobsmacked to see that Thomas the Tank Engine is now done in CGI!!!!!

Well fuck me, having watched Thomas for years as my brothers and me watched it when we were kids, DSS (nearly 9) also loved it when he was a toddler and now DS is also a fan.

I just adored all the sets they did with the buildings, and tiny plants, and animals and all the little attention to detail that was put in just to shoot a 20min long episode. Always struck me as a real labour of love.

Now I don't hate CGI, love the likes of Pixar et al, but I think something is lost when you have shows like Thomas & Noddy and the rest move from stop animation to CGI. Just seems like a budget saving cop out

Ah well at least there is good old Wallace and Gromit (DS loves the Wererabbit one!) and Chicken Run.

we have very very old fireman sam on dvd (I remember watching some of them back in the 80's) then middle version and new cgi version dd2 (huge fireman sam fan) seems to prefer middle version (oh agree norman price needed some firm boundaries and a asbo!)

YANBU but originial Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (Not jiust THomas and Friends as the milkshake one is) is still on TV - But on Nick Jr 2 which is sky 620.

DH has got it on series link on Sky+ so we don't have to watch the CGI one although DS does watch it at the CM's

I have also discovered that from 8pm Nick Jr 2 shows 'classics' Chigley, Mr Benn and Paddington

DS loves these too and he is only 19 months

I blame the pregnancy hormones for wanting to watch these now!!

Is right weegie - where is his mother when he is setting fire to his bedroom/her shop? Oh yeah I know - flirting with that Trevor Evans!

Ringo Starr was replaced by Michael Angelis but on the DVD we've just bought it's ... Pierce Brosnan . Now that is wrong. My DS is always going on about the 'new' Thomas but I haven't seen it. We're usually arguing about coats at that point in the morning

MinnieMummy · 03/02/2010 21:42

DS (3.3) has only seen about three episodes but now insists on only watching 'new' Thomas and not old. I'm all for change but agree with the OP that the attention to detail in old Thomas was one of the few things that makes watching toddler telly bearable!!

Am I right in thinking that the unbearably OTT and smug Mr Maker from Cbeebies is one of the voices in new Thomas??

OMG. Thomas, Fireman Sam, Postman Pat - will they never stop messing with something that works just fine as it is? Plus the new episodes of all of these are just so tedious compared with the older ones (the exception being Fireman Sam which was always tedious).
