[barf]

RatherBeOnThePiste · 31/01/2010 18:55

If you want to get it done - just do it. You are an adult.

StrictlyKatty · 31/01/2010 18:55

I know lots of people with it done. They have all said it wasn't painful and none have regretted it so far.

You know what? You're only young once, don't wait til your 40 then have it done. Have it done now and you can take it out in a few years if you get bored of it. It's not a tattoo, it'll heal if you change your mind

PersonalClown · 31/01/2010 18:56

I still have mine. I had it done over 10 years ago.

Be prepared for the swelling etc. No noe will see it if you don't want them too!

Trickle · 31/01/2010 19:00

Nope not unreasnoble - just bear in mind it's really important to get the right person to do it, research the place you are going to get it done, do they have an autoclave? do they wear gloves, are they trained, do they tell you to use mouthwash or salt gargle (in my experience better places give you a bag of salt, it's much better and actually helps the healing process rather than irritate).

Will they use a big bar and tell you to come back to get it changed - is essential for the swelling and should be inclusive in the price.

Be aware no matter how well placed it will most likely errode your gums and damage your teeth somewhat.

I've had numerous piercings, love them all have never regretted any - apart from not taking out the tounge piercing I had before it did the damage it did to my gums, but I had mine in about 8 years.

DH is much worse as he went somewhere dodgy and they never told him he needed his bar changing so he had a ginormous bar in his gob till he met me and we went to my piercer to get it changed.

What ever you do don't go to a well known high street brand (coloured fruit) their practices are awful.

MrsChemist · 31/01/2010 19:01

YANBU, I want one too, but I can't because my tongue is too veiny

The lady who does my piercings knew how much I wanted it done as well and even she was a bit gutted.

MrsChemist · 31/01/2010 19:04

Agree with Trickle, it's very important that you are confident they are clean and safe.

monkeyfacegrace · 31/01/2010 19:08

Oooh well know high street brand, I cant think of one! I dont know anywhere who does it apart from tattoo parlours, it seems to be connected to that scene.
Anyone know anywhere in Cheltenham/Gloucester that would do it, and how much does it cost?

are you planning a foray into the porn industry?

OrmRenewed · 31/01/2010 19:09

What is a 'tounge'?

Eadwacer · 31/01/2010 19:16

If I see anyone over the age of 19 with their tongue pierced (unless they're obviously a dedicated lifestyle piercer/goth) I cringe so hard I practically need an operation to uncurl my toes.

But since it cannot possibly matter what others think of your appearance - go for it.

bounty007 · 31/01/2010 19:19

best diet you will ever go on (i didn't need to diet at the time). I couldn't eat a thing for the 29 days that I insisted on keeping mine in... I lived on liquids and was very skinny by the end...My tongue has never been the same since

JollyPirate · 31/01/2010 19:20

YABVVVU. Eewwwwww!!

No seriously - if you want it done just do it but OMG I couldn't.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 31/01/2010 19:22

I must be getting old.

What's a tounge?

LynetteScavo · 31/01/2010 19:22

If you feel too old for your age, get a hair cut, and buy some new clothes.

Tongue piercing? Shocking behaviour!

MayorNaze · 31/01/2010 19:22

i toyed with the idea about 10 years ago but didn't in the end, mainly because of all the cons outlined here. if you want to - go for it but take note of all the excellent advice below

monkeyfacegrace · 31/01/2010 19:28

Yeah alright so I cant spell [pokes out tongue emoticon]

I have wardrobes of clothes and always have my hair cut!

Im scared ahhh but I want it done! Just been watching youtube of it, takes less than two minutes.

I can survive that?!

I had kind of the same thing- Had my 1st child at age 22, and felt like I should so something a bit nuts to compnsate for the lack of drunken drugginess my contemperaries were all into at the time.
So...
I had my nose pierced. It made me cry, it was so painful, but I am glad I did it.
And...
I got a few tattoos. Small ones, mind, but I like them- I am such a goody-goody, seeing my ink reminds me that I once did something impulsive

monkeyfacegrace · 31/01/2010 19:29

x posts Stella. It was the tattoos when my exH left me

Hmmmm .... not very classy though , it is a bit common.

What are the health risks if you get an infection (blood poisoning?) and it has to be removed?

BettySwollux · 31/01/2010 20:06

Had mine done years ago for pretty much the same reasons.
Yes it hurt, even with the anasthetic you hold in your mouth for 5 mins before (and it tastes vile).
Tongue went black, then patchy brown/purple/yellow/blue, for about a month.
Really not pretty!

The long bar that you get first is awkward and I chipped a couple of teeth when I was able to eat again.

But, if you dont like it, take it out and it will heal over eventually.

I got sick of mine after maybe a year or so, but DH certainly appreciated it while it was there .

SparklyGothKat · 31/01/2010 20:12

I had mine done about 5 years ago when I was 25-26, didn't hurt at all, was really scared, but was over so quickly. my tongue swelled a bit, but nothing like I thought it would.
Go for it, I love my piercings

larks35 · 31/01/2010 20:16

Urggh [cringe]. Why is a tongue piercing gonna make you feel younger? I've met people with them and it seemed to cause a speech impediment and the clickity, click when eating isn't pleasant. What about spending the money on a new outfit or something? Seriously, I think they are foul!

Casmama · 31/01/2010 20:30

I had my tongue pierced when I was about 18 but took it out when I was about 23. The only other thing I had pierced was my ears so not into piercing particularly and just felt that I had grown out of it. At the end of the day it is personal choice but I think that a nose piercing with a small stud in it might be a better choice- depends a bit on the shape of your nose though.

86Pinkle · 31/01/2010 20:44

You should go for it. Im 23...almost 24 and had mine done at 20. yes it hurt but after a week or two when the swelling has gone its fine. And if you're worried about chipping your teeth as soon as you can change your bar to a plastic one - I have plastic and its alot better.
