to report an untaxed car

I live in a block of flats. We all have allocated parking (cost £20,000 on top of the flat for parking space).

Yet again came home to find a car parked in my slot. Do not want to take someone elses slot. Phoned the management company, but they have not put signs up yet to clamp/tow cars away so can do nothing.

Noticed the car tax on the car is out of date.

Genuine what would you do? Would you report them to car tax evasion? Is that petty (think it probably is now I have let off steam).

Think this is more of a wwyd then a AIBU.

DVLA will already know the tax has run out. Could you report it to police/council as abandoned?

how out of date iws it. I was mortified when i realised i had been driving mine 5 days past the expriy of the other one. I had the reminder early in the month then clean forgot and quickly bought it on line that day, it could be a genuine mistake.

If months and it annoys you, then go ahead.

I would report as abandoned if it was just left there. Someone dumped their car outside our house recently (there are no designated parking spaces and its a nightmare to find somewhere) and I was going to report it as abandoned but the council website said you could only do it if their tax had run out. It was there for about 3 months! Bah!

Probably the quickest AIBU in the world!!IABU. I was just mad that I had the only afternoon off I have had in ages messed up. Had a few plans, but have had to find an empty spot to park (if I had used someone elses spot I would be as bad as the person who used mine).

The tax disc is a few months out of date.

Will now try and do some deep breathing and relaxing exercises. Oh, this will make you laugh. Management agent suggested I park in the disabled spot as that is not allocated!!!Sod the person in the wheelchair/heart problems then.

Tell DVLA, they'll come and tow it, after clamping it so may be another day in your space.

Report it as abandoned (takes them a couple of days to pick it up though) We always seemed to get untaxed cars left outside our flats, so I was quite hardhearted about ringing as soon as I saw them.

But if it's parked on private property then can't it have an out of date tax disc? They may have submitted a SORN? If you have an untaxed car parked in your garage it's fine as long as you don't actually drive it on the roads.

If it's in your space, how annoying that the management company won't tow it! Don't know what you can do really. If it's parked on a space that you own/have a long lease over (which presumably you do if it's allocated and you paid £20k for it) then can you ask the police to remove it?? There must be something you can do. Sorry, I'm actually a solicitor but sadly don't know what the answer is!!!

I reported one last year. I did it online via the dvla website and it was gone the next day. It was always really badly parked on the corner of our very narrow street so it was a real pita.

Just been thinking it over. If I report the car, the car owner may think it is me and damage my car as he knows where I park.

Also, maybe he has been made redundant because of credit crunch and is just getting by? Maybe he has had to take a paycut so has let his car tax go?

Do not think my conscience (sp) will let me report him (assuming it is a man). If he lost his car may mean he loses his job/home etc.

in that case, maybe you could leave a nice note on the windscreen asking him not to park there because it's allocated parking?

If you report it as abandoned all they do is write to the owner and ask. He then phones DVLA back and says no, it isn't abandoned. Nothing else happens.

If it has only arrived in your spot today then its quite likely that it has been driving around untaxed on the road. I think this may have an effect on the insurance as well (not sure which way round it is) So its not like someone has parked up a car that they couldn't afford to tax and have declared a SORN on.

Aged - are you saying that you have put the note on it now or that you have done this previously and they have come back ? Also did you put in the note(s) that it is a privately owned space as sometimes however obvious it is people do seem to need things spelt out. If it has been parked there a long time and is out of tax may well be abandoned - or perhaps hidden away from view - I disagree with a number of other posters I think that the council will at least come and take a look - especially with the tax been out dated.

Definitely report it. Often it's an indication that the driver has no insurance or driving licence either as document offenders tend to lack all 3.

It might be a genuine mistake, on the other hand it might be an uninsured driver that gets caught.

Oh, and I meant to say report it to the police. It will get noted to their ANPR and traffic units who will keep an eye out for it and pull it over if they see it to give the driver a producer to ensure they're driving legally.

Many criminals have been stopped in stopchecks - a little police saying is "not all drivers are criminals but most criminals are drivers"

Don't report it - it's on private land in any case. I would stick a note on just politely saying that it's your personal space and would you mind not parking there again, thankyouverymuch etv=c.

Have put a note on it today. I drove my car out this morning at 7am and got back from work at 3pm (was on a half day, usually do not get back until 7pm). So he may have parked in my spot before only I would not know if he was gone by 7pm.

Hope this makes sense.

Put in the note it is a private space. You need a bleeper thing to get in the garage and you only get a bleeper if you have a parking slot so do not know why he parked in my slot if he has got his own. Or maybe he is a visitor and someone let his car in?

Is he still there? I'd be watching like a hawk. If not gone by tomorrow I'd report it, as has been said, he must have been driving around untaxed to get there in the first place

dh said he would take a look when he gets in from work (takes the train).

Had to move the large wheelie bins and make myself a parking space (used to watch Blue Peter) so I would not park in someone else spot.

Knowing my luck it will be my car moved for impersonating a wheelie bin. Have got my sense of humour back now.

If it is private land then the police etc won't tow it even if it is abandoned. We had one in our car park with the windows put out etc and we had to pay £££ for someone to come and remove it.

Also is correct what someone said about sorn and private land.

In my place a polite note under the windscreen has always done the trick, good luck

If its obstructing you , which it is you have the legal right to use 'reasonable' force to move it.That would include breaking the window so you cvan release the handbrake to push it off (I rand the police station when someone had parked across my driveway.

You may also be able to report an abandoned car to the Fire Brigade. Here in Warwickshire they decided that abandoned cars are often a target to vandals, so they tow them and crush them. Might something similar operate in your area?
