to report an untaxed car

I live in a block of flats. We all have allocated parking (cost £20,000 on top of the flat for parking space).

Yet again came home to find a car parked in my slot. Do not want to take someone elses slot. Phoned the management company, but they have not put signs up yet to clamp/tow cars away so can do nothing.

Noticed the car tax on the car is out of date.

Genuine what would you do? Would you report them to car tax evasion? Is that petty (think it probably is now I have let off steam).

Think this is more of a wwyd then a AIBU.

If the OP is concerned about dobbing him in for being late to tax his car, she will probably draw the line short of it being obliterated

Tempting if it's a persistent offender though...

Put a bill on the car for the amount it costs you for the day for your parking permit.

well bloody reminded mine ran out at the end of last month going to go and do it now!! Thanks

cookinmama · 05/11/2009 17:30

Done, thank you for the indirect reminder and just in case you thought it might be me in the space I live in a house in scotland with no allocated parking - I promise

There is no point reporting to the police, they know on their computers its untaxed.

There is no point reporting to DVLA as its private land, they came and clamped a neighbours car here in our car park and threatened to tow it. Then had to come back and remove clamp and apologise as its private land. The owner did still have to pay a fine, but that would be sent out automatically anyway. So i dont think it would help you much, as you want the car gone

No point reporting to council as its private land so they wont tow it

I would hassle the management company as you are paying for allocated parking and for them to 'manage' that, if the car is moving they could stick up a sign by tomorrow and deal with it asap.

Have you checked the DVLA website? Private land or not, the vehicle has to be either taxed or had a SORN declaration. Otherwise, the owner is breaking the law. Also, if the car is not in your space or elsewhere in the car park all the time, it must be being used on the public road and must, therefore, be breaking the law. Check the DVLA website and you can find out its status (by searching on the registration number). If it is not taxed and not SORN'd, report the b**r. You can do it [http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/onlineservices/report_unlicensed.aspx here]

Also, if I'd paid £20k for a parking space, I think I'd be putting a bomb under the management company to get their fingers out and enforce the rules. What is the money for, after all?

MsHighwater · 05/11/2009 22:57

here, even

WickedWench · 05/11/2009 23:21

That's a lot of money for a parking space!

A couple of weeks ago I was standing at the bus stop at the bottom of my street and watched a DVLA video van drive up and down all the local roads looking for un-taxed vehicles. I've never seen that before. But private land is different.

Maybe next time you should block him in?

Our block of flat has a similar arrangement - secure garage with assigned parking spaces that cost flat owners extra. We had ongoing problems with people parking in wrong spaces, residents allowing their pals into the garage so they couldn't get clamped etc.

The managing agents circulated a note to all flat owners offering the option of purchasing a lockable post for their car park space. Anyone who responded yes paid a fee (think it was 75 pounds) and managing agents arranged a company to come install posts for all who requested.

Posts are secured upright with a padlock (only owner has key), and when unlocked fold down so owner can drive into the space. It has stopped all problems in our block. Maybe an option for you?
