To be furious about overpriced nappies?

Just back from 1 week in Cyrus. Had no idea that it was so expensive - admittedly the resort we stayed in was nice (5 Star) so we sort of expected to pay over the odds to food, drink etc but was just shocked to go to supermarket in the nearby village and pay no less than ?12.50 for a pack of 30 nappies (Pampers) - the same pack usually cost around £6 from Waitrose. Can understand them adding on one or two euros but nearly doubling the price on something which is a necessity makes my blood boil.

well, why didn;'t you buy a cypriot brand instead?

They have to ship them in, of course they are gpoing to be expensive.

I bought the only brand there was. Obviously is there was a cheaper pack I would have bought it!

Do locals shop at that supermarket or does it fleece cater largely to the spillover from the resort? Maybe locals use cloth nappies.

£12.50 for 30 nappies is silly.

Egypt is also like that, though the pampers nappy is made there, although pure plastic bags, and toilet paper: doesn't bear any resemblance to pampers you get in other countries.

anything imported is 3times more expensive at least, and tourists/foreigners are always, I repeat always fleeced. But their currency is so much weaker than the Cyp£... Owch!

If you had have been able to wander into a pharmacy and shop about, you might have found something else, i used to use turkish brands in Egypt but usually these holiday places are pretty closed shop...

As long as you had a good holiday, don't let it get to you... next time you go, take a big bag of nappies with you...

cyprus is expensive. pampers and huggies in some parts of the ME, made in Saudi, are still 2x the price in the UK. used to be worse before they were made more locally. the quality is ok. 40 Moltex nappies in the UAE cost £20. i kid you not.

Blimy, just take your own with you from Blighty, thats what i do when i go to Malta to visit my IL's. I thought that the nappies were expensive there till i read your post. A pack of pampers (30) from chemist in Malta is about £7 not bad compared to them on here, £20 for a pk of nappies where they gold plated

no they were green.

i was in the UAE for 3 mos so it would have been a helluva lot of nappies. i did use reusables daytime ant dispies at night.

Cyprus doesn't use the CYP any more. They use the euro now.

Pampers are expensive. Its possible they are marking up due to proximity to resort, but equally that could be what they cost there.

Its not quite double anyway, you need to convert your pounds to euro first, its about 11 pounds. Plus convenience store prices rather than asda would be a fair comparison depending on size of shop you went to?

I think the small carry pack of pampers would cost around 9euro here in Ireland, so not that far out.

Not something to be furious about, you could've brought them with you, and it hardly broke the bank, staying in a 5 star resort as you were? So YABU

I did bring a huge pack with me but fell short, only just, as DS pooed a lot from change in diet. Only so many packs you can cram in what with strict baggage allowance. So staying in a 5 star resort means we have to accept paying a ridiculous amount for everything?? We were staying in the cheapest room and this is our only holiday this year so I don't think that means I can't complain about paying some greedy shopkeeper 6 euros in profit.

yep, in ireland they're ridiculously expensive too... 18 pull-ups costs me E7 and a pack of nappies (28 i think?) costs about a tenner if i buy pampers, E7 if i buy lidl which are way better anyway.

I've used cloth for all three but dd and ds1 have grown out of all cloth nappies i can find and still need night nappies and i've had so much chaos the last month or so that ds2 has been mostly in sposies too.... it's breaking me!

balance cost of nappies bought in resort vs cost of excess baggage if you take your own

and yes shops near 5* resorts charge more as they assume you are loaded... next time perhaps save on the hotel/resort and take more spending money?

We went to Cyprus in 2008 when they had the CYP £ and it was expensive, we returned in 2009 when they'd entered the Euro...everything had rocketed once more. A very expensive island, but lovely all the same. Paying over the odds for something...one of life's niggles...

Someone told me Cyprus was the most expensive place in Europe. We were really shocked how much a standard supermarket shop cost there this May. We went out for lunch at bog standard taverna - shared a starter, 2 main courses of lamb kebabs and chips and a child's meal plus a couple of soft drinks, no alcohol. It cost £50. So it's not just the nappies ...

Cyprus used to be wonderful, low key tourism, beautiful beaches and then they discovered Club 18-30. Big arse-up, all the hoteliers jumped on the bandwagon and built shite apartments, filled them to capacity and whacked their prices up - joining the Euro was the last straw for me. Waaay too expensive.

OP, where were you staying? In all major resorts there are huge supermarkets (ie Carrefour, Orphanides, etc, where you can buy local nappies for EU6. Think maybe you could have looked a little further afield?

Berar in mind that an alternative post in exactly the same situation could have read 'AIBU to be furious with myself for not packing enough nappies?'
