Yes I agree with blondes. The word 'dairy-intolerant' might have been so much meaningless noise to the waitress. If you actually said 'no cheese please' you aren't being unreasonable.

It was a high end burger place, not that this should make any difference, but I did ask for a burger patty only, nothing else and said that DS was dairy allergic. Nothing with dairy please. She nodded. I asked her if she understood (English was not her first language). She said, 'no dairy...'

It rocked up with melted cheese and the waiter puts it right in front of DS who at 15 months, just grabs. It was a split second, but he didn't touch it.

Massive panic.

dh is dairy allergic, and the dds are gluten and dairy intolerant.

it is impossible to get a meal when out that any of them can eat.

we spell it all out ("dairy means cheese, milk, butter, etc and gluten means wheat oat, barley and rye NOT just wheat")

and still food arrives in a white sauce, or vegetables with butter melting merrily on top ("oh, it's just alittle bit, i can take it off")

our solution now is to take food along for dh and the dds, and so the restaurant only gets the rpoceeds of my meal (and if anyone complains, we usually test them out on what they would serve us, and point out their errors...), but it is not always practical to do so.

that said, many many people have no idea that butter and cream and cheese come under the no dairy window. to most people, no dairy seems to mean no milk, or no eggs (and eggs I can have!).

Some places are fantastic (Wagamama gets a big up from me for their very pro active allergy policy - a guy in the Heathrow one actually corrected me the other week when I forgot to specify no pickles for my gf dish), and some are useless.

I ask exactly what is in something if I am unsure, and will stick with boring food if I can't get a good answer. If I have any choice in the matter, I refuse to go anywhere that can't cater for me

If something turns up with croutons for example when I have specified none, I keep the offending dish until a suitable one turns up. I have had a salad with croutons just picked off before.

SFIL is severely allergic to peas. he always has to say "no peas on mine, not even a drop, not even the same spoon being used becasue i will get very ill and could possibly die and my wife would sue you"

It was just such a lovely day, and thought it would be a nice treat for the kids as we hardly ever eat out, as I'm so paranoid about DS...

I hate thickos I really do. I hate cheese (not allergic) yet most of the time there it is on my burger, like these people are robots or something. Complain, this could have had very serious consequences.

you could try using something like this, which at least means the message is getting to the person cooking the food, not just the person taking the order (who may forget)

I think you need to get into the habit of explaining it as tho they are 5yrs old......be really precise, and even ask to see the chef, or ask to see the ingredients list on the food you are having.

and once you find somewhere fabulous, who understand you without needing to be explained to as tho they are 5, go back.....recommend them, use them a lot.....they are wonderful

in fact, there is a wonderful wonderful place in boscombe that does gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, nut-free food along with 'normal food', and they are fantastic and very very tasty.

I go there now just for the special blueberry pancakes with soya cream.......

junglist...trying to work out why you would always get cheese on your Burger....you are not ordering cheese burgers, are you ...I mean, surely that is the only time one gets cheese on their burger...but than, I am no experts, as I don't really "do" Burgers, lol

Reminds me of the time on a flight with ds who has nut allergy.
They obviously misunderstood that he couln't have nuts with give the child a WHOLE FUCKING BOWL OF NUTS FFS!

Plonked down right on his tray a massive bowl of mixed nuts..it was so shocking it was almost laughable.

Reminds me of my dad. Went to McDs (so I suppose deserves everything he got ) ordered a quarter pounder with no cheese or pickle (cheese gives him migraine and he hates pickle).

Long time ago now to remember the exact sequence, but there followed an award winning farce of the presenting of burgers in every combination of cheese, pickle, no cheese, no pickle that you can think of and finally ended with him yelling "WHAT PART OF NO CHEESE OR PICKLE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND" and speculating about the brain power that led them to be working in McDs in the first place

Finally he got his quarter pounder with no cheese or pickle, but I bet my last rolo they wiped a huge dollop of snot into the middle of it!

I've had the combination thing too! The worst is getting NO lettuce when I've asked for ONLY lettuce. WHY OH WHY????
