To be thoroughly fed up with our neighbours?

When pregnant with my DS two years ago, I ordered quite a lot of baby bits from the internet. Our neighbour commented on the amount of stuff we had delivered and asked me not to have it delivered on a Saturday, as the knocking at our door disturbed his wife's lie in! I politely told them I couldn't control delivery days!!

Anyway, this same neighbour has recently decided to have two pints of milk delivered on a Monday and Friday. The milk arrives anywhere between 3am and 6am and not in a milk float. In comes in a diesel truck and stops outside my 2 year old DS's bedroom window. We live in a really quiet cul de sac, so you can imagine the noise of a diesel truck arriving at the crack of dawn. It has woken us all up many times and I know that come the summer when we have windows open I can kiss goodbye to a good night's sleep or anything resembling a bit of a lie in.

I don't really know what to do to be honest. They only have 4 pints of milk a week. I'd get it at the supermarket for them if it means that much to them!!

Really do you think so? I know I sound grumpy but the other day the lorry arrived at 2.30am. I just don't think it is considerate especially after asking me not to have deliveries on a Saturday as his wife liked to lie in!!

I am all for supporting local businesses and I do. But I wouldn't want to wake someone's child in the process. What happened to milk quiet floats.

I think YABU to complain to your neighbour, just as he was BU to complain to you about your deliveries.

Can you complain to the milk delivery company? I thought this was why they used electric floats.

I would say YABU if it wasn't for their attitude towards your deliveries earlier ... disturbing his wife's lie-in??

Not sure what you could do about it, other than 'damage' the milk in order to put them off ordering it from the milk man.

Or you could try saying something like "would you like me to pick up your milk from the supermarket when I go? as the milk cart thing wakes us up everytime it comes by".

I think this is why I am so miffed about it to be honest. Having a moan to me about his wife being woken up at 9am on Saturday is a bit of a cheek when we got woken up at 2.30am the other day.

Given that they complained about you having things delivered (during the day persumably) you have every right to be cross that they have something delivered in the middle of the night twice a week.

Those of you on this thread who think the op is being unreasonable can you honestly say you wouldnt be fed up if your child was woken up twice a week at 3 or 4 am!

Why not put yourself in her shoes???

I would have a word! Its great that they support a local business but......... most milkmen do not deliver before 5am! I should know my dad was one!

I can understand where you are coming from, but I really don't think you should mention it to your neighbour.

Maybe you could contact the milk company as a prospective customer and ask if they have quiet delivery floats/vans ?

I'm not worried about it waking my husband and I up so much as our two year DS, which it has done a number of times when we have left his window open.

I think I have just got myself worked up about his moan about my deliveries.

yanbu, when my dd wakes up shes getting up, no matter what time - this would drive me mad. could you have a word with the milk delivery company? maybe ask the driver to park at the end of the cul de sac?

My milkman does deliver very early in the morning actually. Not 2.30am though, and he doesn't drive a diesel van thankfully.

Are you exagerating the time a little? Surely the milk would be rank if left out all that time as the weather gets warmer?

Can you make a note of the milk delivery company and ask them not to enter the cul de sac? I actually think it's their responsibility not to wake you up. Just as it was not your fault when your deliveries arrived, it's not their fault that the milk van is noisy. YANBU to not want to be woken in the early hours. I also don't think they were unreasonable not to want deliveries in the morning though. We had the same problem with our neighbours - and had to stop it after we had about 10 deliveries at unsociable hours in about 2 months - so I sympathise with them too.

Thanks Yurtgirl, yeah my deliveries were around 9am and he said that as his wife worked really hard during the week, could we try not to have anything delivered on a Saturday, so she could rest!

What about my 2 year old getting a good night sleep?

Washersaurus, seriously one morning it was 2.30am. I looked out the window and couldn't believe it. Most mornings it is around 5am - 5.30am.

Oh come off it, 2 year olds can manage with being woken up a couple of times a week!! DS1 is woken up nearly every single night (repeatedly) by DS2 and he is usually OK and manages to settle himself.

How is it different to a taxi pulling up outside your house in the early hours?

The street sweeping truck used to come by my bedroom window at 4am once a week, making the house vibrate and had flashing lights - I managed to get used to it and slept through it usually.

So 2.30am was a one off? I'd say 5-5.30am was pretty reasonable tbh.

Gorgeousgirl, we only had the one delivery on a Saturday, so it was a regular thing. The rest of my things came in the week.

I think it is a good idea to contact the delivery company though and will get the name of the company in the morning, as I am sure I will be up bright and early!!

Taxi's don't pull up outside my house 2 a week every week.

Isnt there some law about no deliveries before 5 or 6 or something? My dad definately never delivered before 5, Ill ask him (unless it was a weekend christmas in which case he did three deliveries in two days, nightmare! )
