To be thoroughly fed up with our neighbours?

When pregnant with my DS two years ago, I ordered quite a lot of baby bits from the internet. Our neighbour commented on the amount of stuff we had delivered and asked me not to have it delivered on a Saturday, as the knocking at our door disturbed his wife's lie in! I politely told them I couldn't control delivery days!!

Anyway, this same neighbour has recently decided to have two pints of milk delivered on a Monday and Friday. The milk arrives anywhere between 3am and 6am and not in a milk float. In comes in a diesel truck and stops outside my 2 year old DS's bedroom window. We live in a really quiet cul de sac, so you can imagine the noise of a diesel truck arriving at the crack of dawn. It has woken us all up many times and I know that come the summer when we have windows open I can kiss goodbye to a good night's sleep or anything resembling a bit of a lie in.

I don't really know what to do to be honest. They only have 4 pints of milk a week. I'd get it at the supermarket for them if it means that much to them!!

AIBU?

how's the ruddle country herbie? i'm sort of settled at my new place now....having huge problems with childcare though .

honestly OP, your son will get used to it...

Washersaurus · 15/03/2009 22:25

My nearly 2 year old is usually up for the day by 5am if not before .

Seriously, it sounds like you are just a bit pissed by them making a comment about your deliveries.

Your DC really won't be affected by a couple of deliveries - the world doesn't revolve around your family y'know

SH27 · 15/03/2009 22:26

Well my world revolves around my DS, which is why I am not happy about him being woken up twice a week.

OP posts:
gemmummy · 15/03/2009 22:30

i think you're bloody lucky if you only have to get up twice a week!

gemmummy · 15/03/2009 22:30

i think you're bloody lucky if you only have to get up twice a week!

SH27 · 15/03/2009 22:31

Anyway, many thanks to everyone who commented.

I think I will contact the milk company first as don't want to fall out with the neighbours.........yet!

nickschick · 15/03/2009 22:33

Arrange for a pint of milk to be delivered to yours every saturday and sunday - that will spoil her indoors'lie in .

Yurtgirl · 15/03/2009 22:34

nickschick plus a few essential deliveries!

gagamama · 15/03/2009 22:43

Oh, I don't think you a BU actually. A twice-weekly disturbance in a quiet street is not the same as constant background noise which you would get used to. But I do think contacting the milk delivery company is the best course of action. Maybe they've always had milk delivered and the diesel truck is just a temporary thing while the usual milk float is being repaired? Who knows.

SerendipitousHarlot · 15/03/2009 22:47

If I'm being honest, I think you're being completely unreasonable. Actually, I think you've got a bit of a cheek, sorry.

SH27 · 16/03/2009 08:58

Serendiptious, you don't think my neighbour has got a bit of cheek asking me to stop Saturday deliveries?

I think you would feel differently if it happened to you. You'd be happy with your 2 year old being woken up twice a week would you?

We have only just, in the last 3-4 months got him sleeping through the night and now have this.

Anyway, I don't think it's a bit of a cheek and didn't at 5.25 this morning when my DS toddled into our room as I heard the truck pulling away!

OP posts:
ScaredOfEverything · 16/03/2009 09:04

I think you are definitely NOT being unreasonable. This would drive me mental. Have some perspective! Is it really worth it for 2 pints of milk that they can pick up at any shop!?

Am amazed that everyone seems to think you are to be honest!

JackBauer · 16/03/2009 09:09

I agree with contacting the milk delivery company, if it was an electric float then it wouldn't bother you so they need to sort it out.
I think he was BU with asking you not to have deliveries but that this is a little out of their control, although YANBU to be thoroughly pissed off about it.

Madmentalbint · 16/03/2009 09:09

YANBU

....but maybe you should have been more understanding about your Saturday deliveries.

wastingmyeducation · 16/03/2009 09:25

He was BU, but that doesn't make it ok for you to BU too.

It would piss me off too, but so what?! Life isn't fair.

However, if your street is really as quiet as you say it is, then it would be reasonable to ask the delivery company to park further away.

Our milkman used to come about 3am when I was at home. Used to stagger bump into him getting in from the club.

SH27 · 16/03/2009 09:46

I only had one delivery ever on a Saturday and hadn't arranged for it to come on a Saturday it just arrived.

The milk is twice a week every week and has been for about 3 month now.

I sound like a right old winge bag and I really am not, but this has got right up my nose.

Whilst its annoying for you, you'll probably find that your ds gets up at 5.30 every morning once the clocks change. I know how much i'm dreading the lack of sleep once its bright and sunny at 5am.

SerendipitousHarlot · 16/03/2009 10:18

SH27 I also think it was a cheek for him to try and get you to stop your deliveries. But you're both being unreasonable. I can see why it's annoying, but it's really no different than noisy neighbours or another sibling that keeps waking the other one... that's life, innit?

PenelopePitstops · 16/03/2009 10:20

YABU

get over it

yes has was BU originally, but two wrongs dont make a right

"Given that they complained about you having things delivered (during the day persumably) you have every right to be cross that they have something delivered in the middle of the night twice a week."

and given that she politely told them where to go they have every right to do the same to her.

MommyHasaHeadache · 16/03/2009 10:38

YANBU - would drive me potty too!! I see you have said you will contact the delivery company - let us know what they say!

SH27 · 16/03/2009 11:18

Yes will let you know what delivery company says, will call them later.

OP posts:
lljkk · 16/03/2009 11:20

I stopped having milk delivered when they switched 2 a noisy diesel truck.

CatchaStar · 16/03/2009 11:30

Ask your neighbours very nicely who they are usng to have their milk delivered to them, because you would quite like to have milk delivered too. Then ring the company and question why they are delivering at that time of morning and complain that it's waking your child up. Perhaps they could switch the round so that they deliver to your street at a later time?

My parents have milk delivered too, it's fab Reminds me of when I was younger when nobody really bought milk at a supermarket lol.

You have a right to be annoyed by this, especially after they complained to you. Unfortunately, there's little I suspect you can actually do about it.

You will get used to the noise, jees I live under a couple who fight like cat and dogs and have been known to still be smashing dishes till 4am. I pretty much drown it out now.
