I have just discovered that Gary Glitter is living less than a mile away from my sons school in Margate,,,,,,,,,, i know he is probably being monitored etc but its the thought that he is so close...... People keep telling me has to live somewhere.....cant they find some far flung island to put him on??

Fleurlechaunte · 01/02/2009 17:18

Unfortunately he has already been there.

sherby · 01/02/2009 17:18

I have heard of about 20 people who think he is living down the road from them

lottiejenkins · 01/02/2009 17:21

I dont understand what you mean Fleur? And he is definetly in Margate....loads of people have seen him in and around there since before christmas,,,,,,,,, apparently the local cab firms wont pick him up

If you have to have a paedophile living near you, you're far safer with a such high profile one, than a lesser known person.

He'll be strictly monitored for others safety and for his own.

Lulumama · 01/02/2009 17:23

he is most likely being kept a v v close eye on

if you already take steps to keep your DCs safe, it should not make any odds at all

what about all the sex offenders who live near you that you don;t know about >>

at least this one is high profile and you know about him

Lulumama · 01/02/2009 17:23

precisely, thunderduck

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 01/02/2009 17:24

The people who are a danger are the ones you don't know about.

And trust me when I tell you that within a mile of your home AND your kids school - there'll probably be at least a dozen!

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 17:25

There are probably hundreds especially in Margate near to the school, near your home, everywhere really.

I don't see how it could possibly affect your son, don't worry about it - it's not catching!

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 01/02/2009 17:25

sorry. Just repeating other posters there.

polly wants a cracker, polly wants a cracker

lottiejenkins · 01/02/2009 17:26

Apparently all the local shops etc have been banned from selling him photographic and computer stuff................

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 01/02/2009 17:26

What exactly do you think he's going to do??? He wasn't arrested and imprisoned for breaking into schools and dragging children away. Or for luring them into the bushes as they walked past.

What he did was wrong, and yes it's worrying that there are people around who think of children in that way. But the fact that one person who was caught for looking at disgusting pictures is living within a mile of your child is hardly cause for horror.

Oh and if the cab firms won't pick him up (which you seem to think is funny ), then he'll be far more likely to be WALKING PAST SCHOOLS! AND WALKING NEAR CHILDREN!

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 17:27

Oh what? Banned, by whom? Have you been reading the adscene??

lottiejenkins · 01/02/2009 17:27

Im aware its not catching.......................................................i just dont like the idea thats all...........

They shouldn't sell him any false moustaches or other disguises either.

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 17:28

No I was just trying to cheer you up Lottie.

Seriously don't worry. It isn't likely he will be anywhere near your son in terms of posing a risk.

Thunderduck · 01/02/2009 17:28

As others have mentioned there'll be many other sex offenders living near you that you have no idea about.

They could possibly pose a potential threat but Gary Glitter most certainly does not.

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 17:28

Lol Onetrick!

MrsArchieTheInventor · 01/02/2009 17:29

You are not being unreasonable. It's an uncomfortable feeling knowing that there is someone with an unhealthy interest in children living close to you, even though most of us at some point have lived close to someone like this and not known it.

For what it's worth, I used to work for a police intelligence unit and I had knowledge of sex offenders (amongst other offenders) who lived in my area. It affected my decision to not live on a certain street as I knew of two such offenders who lived in very close proximity to the house in question (back-to-back terraces) and it just felt to uncomfortable as a then single mother of a young toddler. I asked two colleages at the time if my reaction was over the top and they both said no and that it would affect their decision too.

OneTrickMummy · 01/02/2009 17:30

I must admit I would NEVER consider holidaying in S Spain because of the number of gangsters and murderers who move there - apparantly on some stretches of the Costa del Sol you are never more than 20m from a bar with a murderer in it

lottiejenkins · 01/02/2009 17:30

Thankyou MrsArchie

SoupDragon · 01/02/2009 17:31

As Lulu said, worry about all the sex offenders who live near you that you don;t know about.

I rather suspect that GG is no danger to anyone seeing how high profile and well known he is.

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 17:31

Yes living next door to someone would be worrying. living within a few miles of them, not really a problem IMO

We live next door to a residential place for people with psychiatric problems, I worry occasionally when they talk to my children, but nobody with serious child related issues would be placed there so it's not a big deal.

I just make sure I am supervising iyswim as they can be a bit scary.

Fleurlechaunte · 01/02/2009 17:36

I mean he has been in various locations all over the world in his attempts to carry on committing his offences and to escape living in the UK.

I wouldn't be comfortable with it but what can you do? Like someone else said unfortunately I am sure he is not the only one in your locale.

mamadiva · 01/02/2009 17:40

I liv in the Highlands and apparently he was kicked out my local ASDA a week ago and the papers here published that he was living about a mile away.

I don't believe it personally like you loads of people 'seen'him here but TBH I think it's all gossip. Wouldn't worry about it how man are amogst us unknown? Atleast you know him.
