Am I? God damn fireworks I am so f**ked off with our neighbourhood sounding like a lively night on the streets of Baghdad every night this past week! If not banned couldn't the gov. only make them legal at professional organised displays?

I'm afraid YABU. I get very tired of the noise now myself, but I remember when I'd have my face pressed to the window to see every rocket that went up while I waited for our fireworks to be got out.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/11/2008 17:19

yes you are

compo · 05/11/2008 17:20

aw yabu
I remember my dad letting off fireworks in our back garden and we all had sparklers
It was lovely, a gret childhood memory
Not everyone wants to queue up to get into the carpark, stand in a soggy field, pay a fiver, for a crap organised display

aGalChangedHerName · 05/11/2008 17:22

YABU fireworks are lovely to watch.

But i also get tired of the 3 week firework display that happens over Xmas too.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/11/2008 17:24

we had brilliant fireworks parties every year as children....fireworks in a biscuit tin, catherine wheels nailed to the fence, sparklers, very hot baked potatoes, home made fudge - fabulous ! (I always stayed near the house, being nervous of firey things, but still loved it)

falcon · 05/11/2008 18:17

YANBU.They are a nuisance and why people are allowed to freely purchase explosives is beyond me.

They should be restricted to public displays only.

catweazle · 05/11/2008 18:20

YANBU. When I was a child people only had fireworks on Nov 5th. Not the weekend before and the weekend after. Just one night, so you could keep your cats in and sedate your dog.

SalBySea · 05/11/2008 18:22

dont think they should be completely banned as lots of people seem to enjoy them (for reasons beyond me)

but there should be some sort of licencing and a time limit after which its illegal to set them off

not just kids and pets though - elderly confused people who went through the war are often terrified at this time of year which is why I think their use should be limited to certain times and days

solidgoldbrass · 05/11/2008 18:35

A shorter time span for them to be onsale would perhaps be better. But otherwise, stop whining and get a grip: the world does not revolve around the person who complains the most, and putting up with a night or two of disturbance won't kill you.

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2008 18:35

YANBU. I have had enough of fireworks going off for Eidd, then Diwalil, then because it is the weekend before Bonfire Night, and no doubt next weekend too. Then we will be getting ready for three weeks of joy over Christmas and New Year, and then it will just be any random git's birthday on unpredictable nights of the year. But TONIGHT, actual GUY FAWKES, there is currently total silence in our neighbourhood What is wrong with people?

Fireworks have got so much noisier, more dangerous and more frequently used at antisocial times that I do think the time has come to ban them for personal use.

Bah Humbug here too!

Miggsie · 05/11/2008 18:37

We have had fireworks going off for the last 2 weeks every night, some really late, it echoes round the houses (we live in a built up area). When DD was a baby it used to drive me mad, and the cats are nervous wrecks.
When was young there was one night for bonfire and fireworks, now it seems to go on 2 weeks before and after 5th Nov, which really annoys me.
I am not against organised display, but how many bloody spent rocket sticks have I picked up off my front drive over the years...grrr!
I join the bah humbug group here.

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2008 18:37

SGB a lot depends on the area you live in. Where I live there are loads of different cultures and lots of students - so there are scores of events where people get the fireworks out and it never seems to stop. They don't seem to think that 3am on 14th December is an inconvenient time to set off a big display. When I lived in a small town with mainly old people and families (almost exclusively white) there was no major disturbance.

Vapido · 05/11/2008 18:38

Yes, we must ban any hint of fun, immediately.

NutterlyUts · 05/11/2008 18:39

Agree totally with Falcon. SO many stupid people out there, with free access to explosives.. bad bad plan

Vapido · 05/11/2008 18:39

There are rules about times and dates that fireworks can be let off.
If people are not obeying these rules, then report them.
The answer isn't to ban everyone.

SalBySea · 05/11/2008 18:40

solidgoldbrass - its not "a night or two of disturbance", that would be okay, is from last week till the end of Jan!

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2008 18:44

It does seem daft that I can't buy more than 16 paracetamol in a go, or without having someone ask me if I have ever taken it before, but I can go into a newsagent and come home with enough explosives to kill myself and anyone within 3 houses.

Vapido it is virtually impossible to work out where the fireworks are coming from in our area as we live in a small victorian inner city terrace.

fizzbuzz · 05/11/2008 18:50

I thought there were liits on them after midnight on celebration nights, and that's it.

scampadoodle · 05/11/2008 18:54

YANBU. Fireworks are incredibly dangerous & should only be available for organised displays.
Those who think that's a killjoy attitude should be made to work a shift on A&E on Nov 5th...

AbbaFan · 05/11/2008 18:54

I knew there would be at least one thread like this
