I intensely dislike the new(ish) custom, it is American is it not?
I wouldn't let my dc do it and I confess I ignore the doorbell on the night ().
It wouldn't be so bad if they just wanted sweets, but it's also money they're after, I believe.
Isn't it essentially begging too? It frightens some of the old folks and where I live they can get free signs to place on their doors to say they are not partcipating (or something along similar lines).
So aibu do you think?

YEs, a bit. Because for a lot of people it's harmless enjoyuable fun: for the small DC who enjoy dressing up and getting sweeties, for the householders who enjoy giving the sweeties - there's a simple code round our way ie you put up a pumpkin in your window or obvious halloween decorations to signify that you are up for it, if there's no decorations the trick-or-treaters don't knock on the door.

Oh FGS! its a bit of fun.

Also Cod is right, this is something that is done year after year (trick or treat = begging).

The way it's portrayed in films is sweet. All those little kids dressed up and walking round with both parents holding their little hands as they collect treats.

Where I live it's just about teenagers demanding stuff from strangers and throwing eggs at their houses if they don't give them anything - or maybe throwing the eggs anyway since that is more fun.

last year trick or treating 2 different families gave the kids home made halloween biscuits the kids were overjoyed. By all means ignore the scary teenagers (lol)but come on its a kids tradition they want a sugar rush not ur saving yabVVVu

I shall be dressing up as a gohst and knowcking on peoples doors, just so I can save of my sweetie bill. We are in a recession you know...every little helps.

I had a trick or treater complain once that I conly had bountys left, so I told him to give me them back and I'd eat them when DC's were in bed. His parents laughed; really, I was not jokiing!

Almost got mugged at my own front door by a gang of unsupervised 8-10 year olds one year - they were 2 days early and when I told them that, they rushed the door yelling "Give us yer money!". Luckily I managed to slam the door on them.
(Anyone who thinks I am being a wimp, you try it! On your own in a house with 7 largish kids menacing you - not funny!)

Since then, I am either out or pretend to be out. Close all curtains, hide upstairs. I have thought about getting a trick-or-treater doll and hanging it from my porch as a dire warning but think this might be seen as being too much in the spirit of Hallowe'en so don't.

Love Hallowe'en parties, just can't stand this t-or-t'ing business.

Hate it...I take the batteries out of doorbell...or arrange to go out to a halloween party...

I thought it was very American -until I came to live in Scotland...where they call it 'guising' (or something) and it has gone on for years...guess that (or the Irish thing) is where the American's got it from...

Do see the whole 'make a big deal' of Halloween as another ploy to try and make us spend even more money...usually on plastic rubbish...

I hide upstairs too with the curtains closed and feel uneasy 'till it's all over.
I opened the door a couple of years ago to a group of older children 10+ I had some wrapped Haribo sweets ready and gave them a generous handful. They sniggered at the sweets and said they take cash too.
I was upset and closed the door quickly, hence now hiding this year

My mum and dad always thought it was begging and i was NEVER allowed to go although i wanted to so much. i dont know if i would go with DS because now i am older i guess they are right [rolling eyes emotion] it is begging, and TBH i think i would feel embaressed walking around in a stupid costume begging for little more that a couple of freddies

I can remember at the time hating mum and dad so much because my firends used to get together and go as a group but i was never allowed out, we all stayed in with the lights low watching TV so to hide from the trick or treaters.

I would never have expected money though
