To have not picked up the shit

Live near a park with a circular path where I walk regularly. Have seen a guy in a motorised mobility scooter walk his dogs there. He promptly zooms off once they have had a poo and has never in my experience, picked it up. I often glare at him.

Today I was walking towards him when one of his dogs was doing a poo and for the first time ever he has poo bags! As I get closer he says “Excuse me love, can you bag that up for me?”. I stopped and paused to question to myself what he just asked. Because I couldn’t believe my ears I said “I’m sorry?” and he repeated the question. I said “no, I’m not picking up your dog’s poo” and kept walking. He shouted “arsehole” after me.

Now I’m wondering if I should have done it! Would you? Am I being out of order to someone with mobility issues by saying no?!

Is he physically capable of picking it up himself?

NoShitHere · 17/10/2026 20:52

@LoveWine123 I don’t know! I’ve never seen him try. I’ve never seen him with bags before.

Ipsevenenabibas · 17/10/2026 20:54

He noticed you glare and it annoyed him. So he made a cunning plan to bring bags with him and the next time he saw you he would ask you to pick it up. It's possible I am wrong, obviously.

unicornsandstardust · 17/10/2026 20:55

One of the reasons I don't own a dog is because the thought of picking up shite with nothing but a carrier bag between me and it, grosses me out. There's no way I'd do it for a dog I don't even own. His response shows you the kind of person he is. He can't be the only person with a mobility scooter who walks dogs, someone has probably invented a device for the poop scooping in those situations and he needs to use that, not expect random people to be happy to do it.

I like dogs! I’m an animal person. But I don’t have a pet and I don’t want to pick up poo.

I walk there regularly and he has definitely seen my stares/glares.

I like dogs too but I'm not picking up the shit of another person's dog just because they don't want to.

If he is incapable of picking up the mess his dog leaves behind he shouldn't be taking them out alone on walks.

BigBadPotato · 17/10/2026 20:58

oh fuck offfff. It’s very sad that he’s incapable of caring for his dogs in a suitable manner (or can he, but would rather not? 🤔) but it’s not a random passer-by’s responsibility to do it for him. Shouting arsehole after you really does say far more about him than it does about you!

NoShitHere · 17/10/2026 20:58

I wondered if he has been fined and is now carrying bags? Can you be fined if caught not picking it up? We are SW London.

Wtaf.

Someone who is disabled asks for something they need help with for themselves- more than happy to help

Someone disabled asks for something they need help with that is entirely optional, that a lot of able bodied people don't do because they can't cope / don't have time to / don't want to - absolutely no way.

If you can't look after a dog in a responsible way, you don't get a dog

BigBadPotato · 17/10/2026 21:00

Also, and I hate to sound like a cliché, but would he ask / speak to a man that way 🤔

PeasOff · 17/10/2026 21:01

Yanbu. He shouldn't own dogs if he can't clean up after them without depending on a stranger to do it for him. Also, no way I'd risk picking up a random dogs shit and potentially catching something or getting sick.

Furrydogmum · 17/10/2026 21:01

He's a twat! I walk my dog somewhere and a few times there's been poop left, and I feel I need to pick it up because I have a dog, and anyone following might think it was mine! At least you legitimately don't have a dog with you!!

Oh thank goodness, at first I thought you were saying wtaf to me. I felt bad but I didn’t want to do it. Plus if I do it once, I’m picking up his dog shit every time I go for a walk at the park.

I don’t think making the observation that men frequently treat women with less respect than they extend to other men is a cliche.

The guy was basically telling you to ‘pick it up yourself’, OP. How’s he managing to meet the dog’s needs when there’s no one around, I wonder?

This also ran through my mind but then I spend a lot of time on this site Wink

There were loads of other people around. I was possibly the only lone female close to him.

You definitely can be fined (and should be!)

AuroraBloom · 17/10/2026 21:06

Not a chance I would pick dog shit up. That's why I don't have a dog.

movingtotheslowlane · 18/10/2026 01:50

I absolutely would not have done that!

He should be asking another dog owner to do it if he doesn’t have the ability to do it himself.

The dog owning community need to ensure dog shit free streets and look out for each other.

I agree, unless I had serious health issues of my own meaning it would hurt badly. It's not fair that someone who is already in pain and suffering should have to give up their pets, which might be the only good thing in their life. Not fair on the dogs to have to be taken away, if they're happy with him, and as there's so many unwanted dogs these days, they might end up suffering in kennels or killed.
It's not nice he shouted that, but he might really be struggling. Obviously you don't have to help anyone, whether that's giving up a seat to someone with disabilities, or holding a door open, or doing anything to promote equality, but I would try to unless it caused me agony.

So should I have to pick up used nappies, condoms and needles that other people's kids leave around just because I'm a parent? And should I intervene when someone else's kid is harassing someone on the bus/vandalising something/running around or shouting in restaurants?
I wouldn't mind helping a parent with disabilities if (for example) they asked me to go and sort out a bottle for them because they couldn't easily get around, and I'd certainly never say to them that they shouldn't have kids if their disability made it difficult, but I'd help whether I had kids or not.

It’s funny how the solution for you and others is that a woman does it.

He could get a Long handled poo scoop

But that didn’t even occur to you.
