Should eBay be more like vinted

I bought a phone on eBay recently and the seller hasn’t sent it and is ignoring all my messages. I know I’ll get my money back eventually, so that’s not really the issue. It’s more the fact that it was a lot of money for me, and I’ve had the same old iPhone for years. I finally decided to treat myself to something nice for ME for once, as I never buy myself anything, and it was meant to be a birthday treat. Now I have to wait until I’m refunded before I can afford to buy another one, so my birthday treat has been put on hold. 😩
I’ve heard of these loan scams where people list phones they don’t actually have because they need the money as a temporary loan until payday, and I can’t help wondering if that’s what’s happened here.
It got me thinking, though, why doesn’t eBay operate more like Vinted, where the seller doesn’t receive the money until the buyer has received the item and confirmed everything is okay? Surely that would help prevent this sort of thing from happening in the first place? Does anyone else think eBay should do this?

I thought it was held by PayPal until complete, just that it doesnt rely on accepting and waiting 3 days to automatically confirm without input from the buyer? There is lots wrong with Vinted too!

Vinted is just a far better platform hence eBay’s demise. The only thing with eBay is it’s better for big collection items but even then, most people use facebook marketplace.

Then you are obviously lucky to be able to buy one brand new 😊 not everyone is

I love eBay and don't like Vinted, so no, I don't think it should. I think items on eBay are much better presented, Vinted looks very messy!

how would the seller getting paid after the item arrives change that?

I sold something on eBay recently (after a long break). I didn't get the money until a couple of days after the item had arrived.

Phone shops do phones that have been traded in and also can take yours for trade in.

You need to be using sites like backmarket, amazon, who have independant sellers, but more protection.

eBay will give you your money back, and if you paid with Paypal then it's very similar to Vinted in that the vendor will not have received funds yet

I don’t really know the ins and outs of eBay (use vinted) but try CEX for a refurbished phone.

I bought something on eBay and I waited a fair bit of time and it hadn't arrived. The seller told me he wasn't sending me the parcel and he was keeping my money and I couldn't do anything. I sent the info to eBay and they sent me a refund and banned the seller so he was quite wrong.

CaNGCNk · Yesterday 19:09

I love how people are telling me not to buy phones on eBay like thats the point?

Thats what seems to have happened here, they won’t respond to any messages. So frustrating eBay gives them so long to hold on to your money.

This isn't true. I sell on ebay and I dont get the money immediately
Have you raised a claim with ebay ?

Yes but the seller has a week to respond to the claim.

You used to get the money straight away on eBay but that's all changed - the item needs to be delivered first. The issue here will be that eBay give the seller the chance to honour the sale or refund themselves first - I had it with a book that I bought earlier this year. The dimwit seller had gone on holiday and forgotten all about it and only saw the message from first me and then the resolution message from eBay once she was back. To be fair, eBay refunded me in line with their guidance (maybe have been six days or something) before the seller was even back from holiday. I think their safeguards are perfectly fine, they have your back in the event of a sale falling through as in this case.

Well they have to give a short period of grace - what if they've fallen downstairs or a parent is in hospital or one of the million things that can happen. Even if you buy from a shop and get refunded to your card it doesn't appear in your account the same day does it? There is always a timeframe for refunds, no matter where you purchase from.

I knew it would be twisted, they have a week to respond to the CLAIM, not from when I bought it, from when I was forced to open a claim because they didn’t send it and won’t respond to emails, I gave them enough time to send it before putting in the claim now. You understand now? They’ve already had time to post it the week is additional time given.

Right but the seller does not have your money and ebay, in my view, are pretty decent at sorting out issues.
I once bought an item which never arrived. Seller had proof of postage. Ebay refunded us both! Item arrived about 3 months later ...

CaNGCNk · Yesterday 19:21

Vinted if you don’t post it within 5 working days your money is refunded and sale is cancelled none of this we will give them a week after that to respond 🤦‍♀️

No proof of postage has been uploaded and sure your seller didnt ignore you?

Vinted must have improved since I last used it, then. I've been sent the wrong parcel by InPost and, separately, bought a non-existent item. Both snafus involved waiting over a month for my money back, following quite complicated procedures.

I find raising queries on eBay more straightforward & efficient.
