I feel bad but AIBU

AIBU to think my husband is unfairly blaming me for his son’s GCSE results?
I would really appreciate some honest opinions because I’m struggling to understand whether I’m being unreasonable here.
My husband has cheated on me multiple times. The most recent incident was the fifth time I’ve discovered him being involved with another woman. This time, she was living in another country, but he was messaging her, sending her money and hiding it all from me.
Throughout our marriage, there has been a lot of lying, gaslighting and emotional turmoil. By the time I discovered this latest betrayal, I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. I was in a really bad place because of everything that had happened.
We also live with his son, my stepson, who was sitting his GCSEs at the time.
Unfortunately, my stepson didn’t pass any of his GCSEs. Not a single subject.
Now my husband is blaming me. He’s saying that I punished his son by not helping him with his schoolwork or being involved enough in his education.
What I find difficult to accept is that, during this period, my husband himself wasn’t putting in the effort to support his son’s education. From my perspective, he seemed to be spending more time and energy hiding his relationship with this other woman than focusing on what was happening at home.
I wasn’t deliberately withholding help from my stepson or trying to punish him. I was simply struggling to cope emotionally with what my husband was putting me through.
I understand that children shouldn’t suffer because of problems between adults, and I genuinely feel sad that my stepson didn’t get the results he needed.
But I also feel that my husband is now placing the responsibility on me rather than acknowledging his own role as a parent.
AIBU to think it’s unfair for my husband to blame me for his son’s GCSE results when I was struggling mentally because of his repeated infidelity?
I’m genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives, even if you think I could have handled things differently.

Your husband has done a right number on you. He cheated, he didn't check in with his son about revision and you're asking if you should have done more? That's the wrong question. The question is how can you rebuild your self esteem enough to boot him out of your life.

NovemberMorn · 10/10/2026 13:03

YANBU.....and I honestly can't believe you are asking the question.

Lovemelovemycat · 10/10/2026 13:04

Tell him to do one.

MCF86 · 10/10/2026 13:04

YA only BU to still call this man your husband.

He's blaming you because that's the easiest thing to do, but it doesn't make him right.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/10/2026 13:05

No yanbu, your husband should have been acting like a proper parent. The bigger question is why you are still with a man who had already cheated on you at least 4 times before

GetThatFaceOff · 10/10/2026 13:06

What would it take for you to leave the twat? He's cheated on you numerous times, spent money on other women, lied repeatedly, and now tries to blame you for his son failing his exams. What a piece of shit he is.

cartagenagina · 10/10/2026 13:06

Surely you mean STBXH?

What a total bastard. Don’t waste any more of your life on him

AllTheChicken · 10/10/2026 13:08

YANBU in that it isnt your fault, he is the parent so it is his responsibility. However YABU to stay withthis man after 1 time cheating, let alone 5. Pick your self esteem up off the floor and leave.

Followmeplease · 10/10/2026 13:11

You op, are about as much to blame for your step sons GCSE results as I, or any other random stranger is. This turd you have the misfortune to be married to is an abusive, gaslighting twat. It is HIS son and HE was too busy getting his cheap thrills to help him. Again.
That is because your “husband” he is a pathetic, selfish, insecure waste of air.
Please, please, leave him.

JLou08 · 10/10/2026 13:11

I've been here a while but this is my first LTB. I'm usually all for working through marriages but that man has no respect for you and is a cruel bastard. It's not your fault his son failed in the slightest.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/10/2026 13:11

Have you posted about this before? I'm pretty sure someone has. Either way, my reply would be the same:

  • dig deep
  • find your self-respect
  • leave

Good luck.

pimplebum · 10/10/2026 13:11

Can’t believe you are still with him ????

he has lowered your sense of reality and normality that you need to check with othered to see if this allegation is fair

you are not responsible for your stepsons results even if you were the boys tutor or teacher your “ responsibility “ would be severely limited

get rid

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 10/10/2026 13:22

Your DH is an arsehole.
It's sad that your stepson didn't get his CGSEs but that wasn't your job or your responsibility.
I think you need to get out of this relationship.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 10/10/2026 13:24

What was he doing for the 2 years up to his son's exams? GCSEs are not just a 2 week process. Of course you aren't to blame for him being a bad father.

wheredidtheteago · 10/10/2026 13:24

You are worth so much more than this life and treatment, OP. I really hope you realise that.

BillieWiper · 10/10/2026 13:24

Erm your husband cheated on you multiple times. I think you had 99% of us there. No need for the rest.
LTB.

Isittimeformynapyet · 10/10/2026 13:25

I'm dumbfounded at how thoroughly you have been gaslit by this evil man @ThisCoralExpert.

The fact I find it hard to fathom/believe is a measure of how dreadful your situation is, and the only appropriate action is to wash your hands of him.

Namenamchange · 10/10/2026 13:28

Walk out, leave him, pick up yourself esteem and self worth on the way out.

My advice would be be.. Do you work? look for a rental.
Keep quiet, half any joint accounts, pack your stuff, and walk quietly walk out the door. Do not tell him you have left until you have, I would imagine he's abusive Then get a lawyer.
You can do it

Yes, run.

Wannabegreenfingers · 10/10/2026 13:36

You leave. There is absolutely nothing else you can do. Cheated 5 times!! The step son is not your responsibility.

Suspicioustoenails · 10/10/2026 13:37

5 times?
And you're still there...questioning if you are responsible for his crap parenting of his son??
Please get out and get therapy.

Eristealviper · 10/10/2026 13:49

OP, what a vile example to set for his son to imitate & then gaslight you into thinking it’s your fault!
Escape asap. 💐💐

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 10/10/2026 13:56

Yabu you didn't ltb after the first time he cheated..
His ds is his responsibility not yours..

Vaxtable · 10/10/2026 14:02

Why in earth are you still with him? He’s cheated five times? He’s not going to stop

he simply wants you to look after his child

leave
