Hello, can anyone tell me if my mum can claim attendance allowance whilst my dad receives PIP at the same time?
Thank you

Yes, although if she is under state pension age it would be carer’s allowance.

BeigeCardiganOfDoom · 07/10/2026 12:44

If your mother is over state pension age and has health issues then yes, she can apply for Attendance Allowance.

Pureclass · 07/10/2026 12:46

Yes she can.
It has nothing to do with carers allowance as she is claiming for her own health needs.

As long as she is over pension age and has health/disability issues she can apply for attendance allowance.

It only has a care based component- no mobility.

That is an entirely different thing.

@Pureclass Thank you - my dad seems to think because he gets PIP, that my mum who is over state pension age cannot claim for attendance allowance.

She can if she has her own health issues, yes.

Goldengirl123 · 07/10/2026 12:53

No you don’t get carers allowance once you get to pension age. I know from personal experience. My husband is still caring for me but we don’t get the money

She is not asking about CA. She is asking about AA and PIP.

Lisa12188 · 07/10/2026 12:56

@Goldengirl123 sorry, i am not asking about carers allowance. I was asking about attendance allowance.

Are they getting confused with carers allowance? AA has nothing to do with anyone else’s claim for benefits. It’s relevant to your mums needs.

Your father is simply wrong.

ZanderRooney · 07/10/2026 12:57

Attendance Allowance is not means tested.

Sorry I did ask if they are getting confused between the 2 but only because her claim for her care needs isn’t based on anyone else’s, irrespective of age.

@BeigeCardiganOfDoom Thank you - my dad seems to think because he gets PIP, that my mum who is over state pension age cannot claim for attendance allowance.

They’re treated individually so your mum can claim AA.

He may be confusing that one person can’t claim both (so when he’s over pension age if he’s still on PIP he can stay on it, but then cannot claim AA).

Here is the link to the online claim form for attendance allowance:

Yes, attendance allowance is health dependent and unrelated to other income. Brace yourself, the form goes on a bit! My mum gets attendance allowance as of last year, I had no idea about it and DH and I were getting exhausted up trying to pay for her carers coming in every day and going up there several times a week ourselves to batch cook/clean. One of the nurses mentioned it when she was last in hospital so I did the application.

She got the higher amount and it doesn't cover everything, but it helps massively.

radness75 · 07/10/2026 13:19

Yes you can definitely get it at any age providing you meet the criteria. The form is very long! My MIL, who is 81 and pretty fit for ger age!, gets it for looking after her younger brother and it allowed them to get a much needed downstairs wet room put in for him, once they had saved up. It has really been a gamechanger for him.

ExitPursuedByABare · 07/10/2026 13:23

Attendance Allowance is not based on what you are doing for someone else. It is for you and your needs. You won’t get it for ‘caring’ for your DH. Concentrate on how your health or disability affects you. Read the notes on the form which give good guidance.

You don’t get AA for looking after someone, you get it for your own care needs.

LIZS · 07/10/2026 15:20

Attendance Allowance is like PIP for those ver state pension age. They can each claim one but she can’t claim Carers Allowance for him but he might if he is under State Pension Age.

That will be carers allowance. attendance allowance is paid to the person with needs

You don’t get carers allowance over state pension age, something isn’t right here.

Unless the DM isn’t claiming state pension?

If your mum has health issues that qualify for attendance allowance then yes, she can. Your father's claim for his own disability is totally separate.
