Marmite- has it changed to watery rubbish?

If you hate marmite, this one isn’t for you. But if like me you e been eating it for years, have you noticed a change?

I bought several jars in January as well as some of Aldi own brand. The genuine Marmite is definitely thinner, almost runny. Paler brown in colour and much less tasty.

Dd and DH say the same.

Have we just lost the plot? Or is this another case of a producer changing the recipe without telling anyone to make a cheaper inferior product while still charging the same price.

poll- AIBU : marmite is the same
IANBU marmite has changed to tasteless shit

I do feel its softer but sometimes its the spread you use underneath that seems to make it very watery, if i use butter its better but the low fat spreads are awful with it.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/10/2026 09:10

It’s definitely more runny than it used to be when I was a child in the 70s, but it’s been like that for a long time.
I haven’t noticed any other changes.

BarnacleBeasley · 07/10/2026 09:12

I think it goes thicker and darker if you keep it for a long time, so it might just be that the genuine stuff is selling more quickly and getting restocked. I once house-sat for someone who evidently didn't eat marmite but had a jar at the back of the cupboard that was years out of date and obvs I ate it anyway (as desperate) and it had gone so thick and black it was actually like vegemite.

Poppingby · 07/10/2026 09:14

It definitely is! The marmite XO is more like the old stuff. But now I'm searching for it and it seems unavailable.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 07/10/2026 09:17

I haven’t noticed this at all. This is the jar, not the squidgy bottle?

KnickerlessParsons · 07/10/2026 09:28

I didn’t like Marmite XO. It didn’t really taste any different IMO

averylongtimeago · 07/10/2026 09:28

This is the jar, not the squeeze bottle. I bought several jars in December to bring back (can’t get marmite here) and they have all been the same.
They have been stored in a cool pantry so I don’t think that’s the problem.

I find the actual jar is still the same thick consistency.
But I like the squeezy jar for ease, and obviously that is a bit runnier.

Interesting. I thought it was much more like old marmite. All immaterial now seemingly!

Hundslappadrifa · 07/10/2026 09:51

It’s definitely softer, I just assumed that’s because they now do it in squeezy plastic jars and it needs to be runny

MrsShawnHatosy · 07/10/2026 10:30

I prefer Vegemite to Marmite. Marmite is just not the same anymore.

thenightsky · 07/10/2026 11:01

We're family of marmite eaters and we just assumed the endless warmer/hotter weather since May means it is runnier. Like the butter is never rock hard any more. When the weather turns, it will go thicker again I reckon.

Climate change affects Marmite. Now that's a good attention grabbing headline. Grin

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/10/2026 11:12

Lifelong marmite lover here who eats it every day and I haven’t noticed a difference 🤷‍♀️

You gave me a little scare there op 😉😂

SerendipityCat · 07/10/2026 11:15

The Tesco and Aldi versions of Marmite are just as good, if not better than the real thing. And cheaper! Don’t be tempted to try Vegemite, that really is a foul concoction.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 07/10/2026 11:22

I love the Aldi version.

It was too strong for me.

Amphard · 07/10/2026 12:16

This is terrible news.

nocrystalballs · 07/10/2026 12:17

When they changed to the Squeezy jars they changed the formula. I watched an inside the factory style documentary about it when dc1 was born was about 17 odd years ago

That’s a matter of opinion. I like Vegemite.

Sorry, you’re wrong. Nothing will ever beat marmite! 🤣

pinkleavesandtea · 07/10/2026 12:47

Marmite hasn’t changed for me. Love dipping a spoon in and eating it directly out of the jar! Please let’s not talk about Vegemite it doesn’t compare and is so powdery!

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 07/10/2026 12:49

I am still buying it in glass jars, and I agree it is much more watery. Of all the different marmites they have done the only one I didn't like was the truffle one.

Giggorata · 07/10/2026 12:51

I bought a large tub of Marmite and was appalled to find that it now actually runs off the knife!!!

IzzyLeng · 07/10/2026 12:53

No idea as I swapped to Aldi own brand ages ago precisely because it was runnier and easy to spread. Tastes identical to me as the real stuff.

PenguinofAntarctica · 07/10/2026 15:14

It changed a long time ago. This is why we buy Australian Vegemite, available in most UK supermarkets.
