Marmite- has it changed to watery rubbish?

If you hate marmite, this one isn’t for you. But if like me you e been eating it for years, have you noticed a change?

I bought several jars in January as well as some of Aldi own brand. The genuine Marmite is definitely thinner, almost runny. Paler brown in colour and much less tasty.

Dd and DH say the same.

Have we just lost the plot? Or is this another case of a producer changing the recipe without telling anyone to make a cheaper inferior product while still charging the same price.

poll- AIBU : marmite is the same
IANBU marmite has changed to tasteless shit

I've just bought a jar and it seems absolutely fine to me. Same as it always was.

NopeNotThat · 07/10/2026 15:18

I think once you try another brand, you suddenly notice the consistency.

I'd only had marmite until a few years ago when I bought tesco in a pinch. Initially I was like WTF is this? 😆 but it was fine, I liked it once I got over that! Kept buying tesco and then had to have marmite and again I was like WTF?!? Both brands are fine but switching between the two is a rollercoaster! 😆

I bought a jar recently and it’s no different to how it’s been for decades. A new jar is always a bit softer than the dregs of an old one but after a month or so it starts turning into the usual tasty black tar.

averylongtimeago · 07/10/2026 17:44

I bought my “not so tasty” jars last December- interesting that some people are finding recently purchased jars the same as always. Has the recipe changed back?

I’ve not had any marmite changes at all and we’ve had it pretty continuously. New jars only every 4 months or so, not sure how often.

BeAvidBiscuit · 08/10/2026 18:27

Seems ok to me.

croisette · 08/10/2026 18:29

If you ask me it only goes very thick and hard once it’s been open a few weeks. All new jars are runny. I will die on this hill 😂

Nomura · 08/10/2026 20:01

Marmite in the jar for me, hasn't changed. They ran out the other day so bough Tesco Marmite --More watery, but just as yummy!

averylongtimeago · 08/10/2026 22:26

From these responses it seems like recently bought marmite is like it always was?
Has anyone come across that? Had a runny/paler/ not as strong jar, then bought one recently and found it better?

The jars I have were bought last December and were definitely different to the “old” marmite.

I am still buying it in glass jars, and I agree it is much more watery. Of all the different marmites they have done the only one I didn't like was the truffle one.

I love the truffle one but haven’t been able to get it for ages 😢

Perhaps try own brand yeast extract - tastes just like Marmite, but I have to have as coeliac and branded Marmite is not gluten free. Might be worth a try?…

It doesn’t taste like marmite! Not to someone who’s been eating marmite for over 60 years 🤣

Mydogisagentleman · 09/10/2026 06:41

I think it goes thicker and harder to spread in the cold

Are you in UK…if so, the main supermarkets (Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons) have their own brand yeast extract (literally called yeast extract), normally right by wherever the marmite is, similar looking packaging.

Dontcallmescarface · 09/10/2026 10:52

SerendipityCat · 07/10/2026 11:15

The Tesco and Aldi versions of Marmite are just as good, if not better than the real thing. And cheaper! Don’t be tempted to try Vegemite, that really is a foul concoction.

I prefer Vegemite to Marmite.

LeaderBee · 09/10/2026 10:54

I think you're being unreasonable, Marmite is made from the waste product from brewing beer, they have no reason to make it thinner, what else are they going to do with all that yeast extract?

Alittlefrustrated · 09/10/2026 11:51

ASDA own brand tastes the same, for considerably less money.
It is thinner than I remember marmite to be though.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/10/2026 12:05

Are you used to very old marmite? A hater gave me an ancient jar of hers and it was like tar you'd put on the road !

Hohofortherobbers · 09/10/2026 12:06

New jar recently tastes just a great as always. I put butter under it.....quite a lot of butter

Borborygmus · 09/10/2026 12:55

Definitely runnier. If I tilt the jar you can see the surface move, that didn't used to happen (well it did but VERY VERY slowly).

Like glass in a window. Sigh.

ForTipsyFinch · 09/10/2026 14:21

I haven’t noticed anything.

ForTipsyFinch · 09/10/2026 14:23

I have tried all the supermarket versions, I can definitely taste the difference - if I had to pick I would say Aldi but I found the Tesco one disgusting. Marmite is one of the very few branded items I get.

AIiswatchingyou · 09/10/2026 14:27

Vegemite is still wondrously solid - you can pretty much carve it out the jar.

It tastes different, but in a good way.

I have the big tubs of marmite so not squeezy - still pretty thick, but when warm becomes more runny.
