Whoever you are, THANK YOU!

I used to avoid swede because of the sheer faff of cutting and peeling and chopping.

Thanks to your advice about microwaving the whole swede, I’ve had one a week since!

I may love you a bit Grin

So , what do you do? Microwave, then chop, then finish cooking? Microwave all the way and scoop? How does this magic work?

nomas · 04/10/2026 19:29

Can someone link it? I also get put off cooking Swedes.

Put the swede the microwave whole and cook for 6 to 9 mins on high depending on the size. Then turn upside down and cook for another 6 to 9 mins. Chop the top off and scoop out! MAGIC.

You may need more or less time depending on your microwave and the size of the swede so you do need to experiment a bit.

Put whole swede in microwave do not pierce. Approx 20 mins . It will will sing /squeal . If it's firm pop in for longer . Slice top off and scoop out the flesh . Swede like you have never had before

Thanks . Can you do the same with butternut squash?

TheoreticallyAdult · 04/10/2026 19:40

I’d say butternut will explode. The swede weeps so while a bit dramatic isn’t risky 😁

Idk but you can stab some holes in it and bung it in the oven, or halve it lengthwise and oil and salt the exposed flesh and bung that in the oven and it's delicious. Don't see why either of those wouldn't work in a microwave

Singing Swedes. I love them too. We had.one this evening with roast ham, cauliflower cheese and roasties

These swedes are very emotional, weeping and squeaking as soon as they get any heat.

Ah, I tried this last year - another poster had recommended doing swede in the microwave on an older thread.

I didn’t get on with it at all which is a bugger because I love swede.

I found the microwave alters the texture - I suppose it’s similar to the textural differences between boiled potatoes and microwave potatoes. Even when mashed I found it unpleasant.

However, for me the ballache is the peeling. If you microwave the swede for just a couple of minutes, it starts to soften the skin. That makes it really easy to peel but doesn’t affect the texture as you still cook it on the stove like normal.

Just an alternative in case anyone like me doesn’t get on with the microwave texture!
