Can you contact child protective services if a mother leaves her child stranded in front of her house at night?

I don't mind children playing in the street, but this woman's kids scream too much. You get home from work and have to listen to these children screaming until about 10 pm, every day. It's exhausting, and I think this woman doesn't like taking care of her children because she leaves these 6-year-olds screaming in the street and goes far away or inside the house

You can, and should, report any concerns you have for the welfare of a child(ren).

It’s not up to us to decide what’s ok or not, we refer for the authorities to do that.

Crunchymum · 04/10/2026 17:05

Child protective services? Where do you live?

GardenCovent · 04/10/2026 17:05

This can’t be real, why would you even need to ask?

Maray1967 · 04/10/2026 17:05

I would have called social services on a parent whose six year old was out in the street at 10pm as soon as I first noticed the situation.

Credittocress · 04/10/2026 17:06

So she doesn’t leave them stranded, she just lets them play outside and you don’t like it???

Going by the way it’s worded, the children are playing outside their house. Yes it is unreasonable for young children to be out playing that late, but I’m not sure ss will be massively concerned about it.

Child protective services? Where are you?

StockingsByTheFire · 04/10/2026 17:10

Whilst it sounds like lazy parenting, if they're playing outside their house, and she's in the house 10ft away, they aren't stranded.

Isittimeformynapyet · 04/10/2026 17:16

Stranded 🙄

You couldn't sound less concerned for their welfare if you tried.

Sorry, I read it wrong, as in leaving a 6 year old outside screaming to get in until 10pm

CinnamonBuns67 · 04/10/2026 17:41

I'd hardly call them stranded if they are outside their own home unless she's physically locking them out but yes I would call social services as children shouldn't be playing out at that time.

Batties · 04/10/2026 17:43

Do you mean they are physically prevented from entering their home? Also, child protective services doesn’t exist in the U.K.

BerryTwister · 04/10/2026 17:50

I assume you’re in America OP, as that’s where they have “child protective services”, so it’s hard for people on a UK site to advise on thresholds for reporting.

I think that's what OP hoped we'd all do 😄

Child protective services? Where do you live?

In Brazil, it's called the Conselho Tutelar (Guardianship Council)—a place where you report child abuse or neglect

They are quite far from the house; they are walking all along the street

The Guardianship Council is a place where you can report parents for irresponsibility regarding their children or report abuse

I know that in a lot of countries 10pm isn't seen as being as late as we regard it to be. Probably less unreasonable that we'd have first thought.

Well obviously. What does that have to do with the kids playing outside?
