AIBU to be really disappointed with my dad’s funeral flowers and how this was handled?
My dad died very suddenly at the beginning of September and his funeral was this week. I was his only biological daughter and organised a lot of his funeral, so I completely accept that emotions are very high at the moment and I genuinely want some outside opinions on whether I’m being unreasonable.
The florist actually knew my dad personally, so this wasn’t just a completely anonymous order.
I ordered several things from her: a coffin spray for £180, DAD letters for £150, a 3D barn owl for £160, and individual flowers for members of the family to place on Dad’s coffin during the committal.
I want to be completely fair from the start: the coffin spray and the DAD letters were lovely. I was really happy with those and I’ve told the florist that. This isn’t me saying everything she did was awful, because it wasn’t.
There are, however, two things that have really upset me.
Firstly, the barn owl.
Dad loved barn owls, so I wanted a 3D barn owl tribute for him. I sent the florist a reference photograph showing the sort of owl I wanted.
I obviously wasn’t expecting a carbon copy. I appreciate that floristry is creative work and every florist will produce something slightly different.
But when I saw the finished owl, I was honestly really shocked by how different it was from the reference.
The reference had the very distinctive heart-shaped face of a barn owl and quite realistic features. What we received looked completely different to me, particularly around the face and eyes.
I’ll attach photographs of both so people can make their own minds up rather than relying on my description.
The florist has since explained that she never copies another florist’s work and that she spent a long time making the owl.
I genuinely appreciate the work that went into it, but my feeling is that if the reference I’d supplied wasn’t something she was prepared or able to recreate reasonably closely, I would rather have been told that when I ordered it. I could then have decided whether I still wanted to go ahead.
It cost £160, so I don’t think it was unreasonable to expect the finished tribute to at least be recognisably similar to the example I’d provided.
There was also the condition of some of the flowers.
I went back to the funeral directors to collect Dad’s flowers less than 24 hours after they had been delivered. Some of the white flowers already looked quite dull/cream and some of the roses looked dry and tired.
What made me notice it particularly was that there were flowers there from other funerals which still looked incredibly fresh in comparison.
The florist has said that her flowers come from Holland and were fresh, and I’m not suggesting that she deliberately used old flowers. I’m simply saying that, for whatever reason, some of ours didn’t seem to last particularly well.
However, the individual flowers are the part I’m actually most upset about.
This wasn’t just an additional bunch of flowers I’d ordered.
It was a planned part of Dad’s funeral service.
I wanted each member of our immediate family to have an individual flower that we would place on top of Dad’s coffin at the committal.
I sent the florist a list of exactly what we needed, with specific flowers/colours for different people. This included things such as sunflowers and blue flowers.
The florist knew Dad personally and the original plan was that she was attending his funeral.
When we discussed these individual flowers, she actually explained to me that normally she would deliver them to the funeral directors along with all of the other funeral flowers, but because she was coming to Dad’s funeral herself, she would bring the individual flowers with her.
So that was the arrangement I understood we had.
I wasn’t subsequently told that arrangement had changed.
Dad’s funeral took place and eventually we reached the committal.
The celebrant started the part of the service where we were supposed to place our individual flowers on Dad’s coffin.
And I immediately started looking around for the florist.
I wasn’t just assuming that a florist would normally attend a funeral or randomly expecting her to produce the flowers.
I was looking for her because she had specifically told me that rather than delivering those particular flowers with everything else, she would bring them with her because she was attending the funeral.
But she wasn’t there.
We were all looking around wondering where the flowers were.
It was incredibly awkward because this was happening during the actual committal of my dad.
Eventually we had to ask the funeral directors whether any individual flowers had been delivered.
They had no idea what we were talking about.
Someone had to go and look for them and they eventually found what appeared to be a bunch/box of loose flowers in the hearse.
We were then trying to work out whether these were even the flowers we’d ordered because they didn’t appear to match my list. There were no sunflowers or blue flowers, for example.
By that point the whole moment had gone anyway.
I’ve since found out that the florist had delivered some loose individual flowers to the funeral directors after all.
Apparently she arrived as they were locking up.
The funeral directors have told me that when she delivered the owl she gave them specific instructions regarding how it needed to be handled/carried, and those instructions were written down.
However, they have told me that they were not told that the individual flowers were for the committal or that they needed to be brought into the service and handed to the family.
So as far as they were concerned, they were simply some flowers that had been delivered for the funeral.
The florist says that she did tell the funeral directors that they were the individual flowers.
The funeral directors say she didn’t.
They’ve told me that if they’d been told those flowers were specifically required for the committal, it would have been written down with the other instructions, just as the instructions about handling the owl were.
Obviously I wasn’t physically standing there when that conversation took place, so I can’t categorically tell anybody which version is correct.
What I do know is what was agreed directly with me.
I had specifically been told that normally the individual flowers would be delivered with everything else, but because she was attending Dad’s funeral, she would bring them herself.
Nobody told me that plan had changed.
So when the celebrant reached that part of Dad’s service, I was sitting there looking around for her, waiting for the flowers she’d told me she would bring.
She wasn’t there, the funeral directors didn’t know they were supposed to provide them, and we never got to do it.
And that’s the part I’m really struggling with.
It might sound like “just some flowers”, but it wasn’t about the flowers themselves.
This was the final thing I had planned for us to do for Dad.
We were each supposed to walk up, place our flower on his coffin and say goodbye before his coffin disappeared.
I’ll never get that moment back.
If I’d known beforehand that the florist wasn’t attending and that the arrangement had changed, I could have made sure the funeral directors knew exactly what the flowers were for. I could have collected them myself. I could have asked somebody else to be responsible for them. There were so many ways it could have been sorted.
But I didn’t know there was anything that needed sorting.
I’ve since spoken to the florist about all of this.
She sent me a long voice note explaining that she spent ages making the owl, that she doesn’t copy other florists’ work, that her flowers come from Holland and were fresh, and that she did tell the funeral directors what the individual flowers were for.
I have tried to be fair with her. I’ve told her that the DAD letters and Dad’s coffin spray were lovely and that I appreciate the work that went into them.
I also completely understand why she ultimately couldn’t attend the funeral. I’m not angry with her for that and I made that clear to her. Things happen and sometimes people simply can’t attend.
My issue is that I didn’t know the arrangement for those flowers had changed when their delivery was tied specifically to her attending.
I’ve also explained that I’ve been to funerals before where family members have placed individual flowers on the coffin, so if what I’d asked for wasn’t possible or wasn’t something she could reliably arrange, I’d have preferred to have been told and I would have made other arrangements.
I’m not looking to destroy someone’s business and I’m not saying that everything she made was terrible.
I’m just incredibly disappointed.
Part of me is also questioning myself because this is all so raw and it was my dad’s funeral. Maybe I’m focusing on things more because I’m grieving.
So I genuinely want outside opinions.
AIBU to be upset about how this was handled?
And separately, looking purely at the floristry and ignoring everything else, would you have been happy with the £160 barn owl compared with the reference photograph?
I’ll attach the reference picture, the owl we received, the DAD letters, coffin spray and photographs of the condition of the flowers less than 24 hours later so people can judge it fairly for themselves.

The pillow that just looked dull and old. Especially next to all the other lovely fresh pieces for the other funerals :(

I’m sorry for your loss, OP. 💐 I think you’re just projecting your sadness annd grief onto the florist. Flowers are ephemeral, a realistic barn owl made out of flowers is not going to be something most florists are going to be able to do to your exacting standard, and the individual flowers was a miscommunication that should have been double-checked before the moment they were needed. But it’s easy for emotions to run high at times like this. I think you should go easy on yourself.

Littlebobbin15 · 03/10/2026 00:57

Sorry for your loss, the loss of a parent is always hard.

I think the pillow looks lovely and the colours are especially nice, but yes some of the white / cream are yellowing a bit. But they do look ok to me.

The owl looks like a different shape to the reference picture, I don’t think that looks great tbh or is it just the angle? I think your comments about that are justified, but maybe it was just too difficult to recreate?

i think the single flowers just sounds like an unfortunate mix up, maybe a family member could have helped you with this part of the funeral? I understand you’re upset about it but please be kind to yourself at this time as you are deep in grief.

StormKevin · 03/10/2026 01:01

I’m sorry about your dad. I think you need to try and stop thinking about this for at least a week and then reappraise the situation. None of this matters. Other attendees to the funeral won’t have noticed anything wrong. The happy memories of your dad are what’s important. The funeral is just something to get through, celebrate your dad in other ways.

T1Dmama · 03/10/2026 01:04

Yeah I would be cross. That owl is not great!
She should have ensured the individual flowers got to you. If she had made plans which needed to change she should have called you and told you!

Whoops75 · 03/10/2026 01:04

I would let it go OP
Sorry for your loss.

Oftenaddled · 03/10/2026 01:09

It's not the last thing you can do for your dad. It's just one stage of mourning him. You don't need to rush. You obviously loved him and you will always remember him. Anytime you want to bring flowers to a grave, or set them beside a photo of him, or do something completely different in his memory, you'll be doing something for him. It's your thoughts for him that matter and this wasn't your last chance. Sorry for your loss - go easy on yourself as I'm sure your dad would want.

JustWalnut · 03/10/2026 01:15

I mean, a barn owl made of flowers (!) was never going to turn out great but that was your call.

caringcarer · 03/10/2026 01:27

The barn owl doesn't look like the first one. If the florist changed the plan about bringing flowers herself she should have told you. The pillow of flowers do look a bit gone over but would they have been without water for 24 hours? I think you are so upset about losing your Dad that you have got a bit fixated on the flowers. It's so hard to lose a beloved parent. You can't go back in time and change things so I'd let it go.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/10/2026 01:28

I am sorry for your loss. I buried my dad on Wednesday, so I feel your pain. Be kind to yourself as I am sure your dad would not want you to be sad.

Bigcat25 · 03/10/2026 01:45

Honestly, I like the owl. It was probably her first time making it and she was probably in a time with the other items.

Darragon · 03/10/2026 01:45

Sorry for your loss, OP. I think you are being unrealistic about the owl, it’s made of flowers. The committal flowers should have been communicated better but who knows whether it was the florist or funeral director? Don’t fall out with your dad’s friend over this; she is grieving too.

coughingnodd · 03/10/2026 01:49

I lost my mum suddenly a few years ago so I empathise with the heartache and the desire to give the ‘perfect send off’. Gently, in time to come, none of this will matter and you will instead be able to look back on his life and remember all the happy times.

You obviously loved him dearly. I’m sorry for your loss.

Bigcat25 · 03/10/2026 01:55

Sorry * time crunch above.

Topseyt123 · 03/10/2026 02:13

I am sorry for the loss of your Dad.

I lost my mother (my last surviving parent) this year, and also my lovely DH within three months of each other so I've had my share of loss and close family funerals. It's very hard and probably fair to say that little things do matter, and different ones are noticed more by different people (or not at all by many others).

However, I think that some of the things you wanted were a little out of the ordinary and perhaps not something the florist would normally be asked for, so she was producing them perhaps for the first time and under time pressure too.

To me the attempt at replicating the owl is passable, though not perfect. It would be acceptable to me. I can't really see the problem with the pillow etc. Not from the photos anyway.

I'm not sure that flowers for each individual attendee to place on the coffin is a regular requirement (not known it at any funeral I have ever been to) so it probably confused people and was a miscommunication. A lovely idea, but out of the ordinary so risked being misunderstood perhaps.

Please be kind to yourself right now. In the grand scheme of things, and as time goes by, this will fade and really won't matter so much. Other people probably didn't even notice these issues.

JenRummy · 03/10/2026 05:02

Sorry for your loss OP. Your heart must be broken. Do agree this is projecting your grief via the florals. Hard to cope with the loss so energy put into elements which at the end of the day, whilst at the time are upsetting, in the grand scheme of things, aren’t that important.

Things can and do go wrong. Placing a flower on your Dads coffin would have been a moving public tribute but sadly he’s not here, so wouldn’t know. That wasn’t the last thing you’ll do for him. He was too special to you by sounds of it for that.

You might find you carry him round in your heart and pocket every single day and a great tribute is to speak of him often, especially recalling the laughs. It’s likely he’d want you to live the best life you can and remember too whenever you want you can take flowers to his resting place or another place he loved as often as you want.

Get some rest, be extra kind to yourself and just sorry there was a slight blip to what sounded otherwise to be a very loving send off.

sparrowhawkhere · 03/10/2026 05:29

I think the owl is a good effort at recreating the original. I would have assumed this would be hard for the florist to recreate. The individual flowers, whilst a lovely idea, actually sounds like a lot of work e.g. sunflower for person x, blue flower for person y and that ideally would need to be checked before the funeral, I know she said she’d be there but that would be doing an extra job in a way. Sounds like she messed up with communication but ultimately it’s just a really hard time for you. Hope you start to feel better about it all soon.

junebirthdaygirl · 03/10/2026 05:52

I am sorry about your Dad.
Both times when l lost each parent l became obsessed with one aspect of the funeral and was so angry even though l would rarely be angry about stuff. It took me a while to realise that anger is a huge part of grief and l was just angry and need to focus that on something or someone. I think you were expecting too much from your florist around the owl and l was actually surprised when l saw the picture as l was expecting much worse.
Try to focus on the good parts of the funeral..if that is possible with a funeral and leave off the thoughts about the florist.
Is their a group that helps to preserve barn owls that you could give a donation in his honour or get a nice painting of one to have in his memory.
You sound like a devoted daughter and that does not change due to flowers.

DrEllisGrey · 03/10/2026 05:52

Hopefully writing this out has helped a little.

You’re obviously grieving and this has upset you, Anger, resentment, denial, push back - all part of a grief cycle that you will have to experience. It’s truly awful.

If your dad was here right now, what would he say to you about it all? Would he tell you to stop mithering about it, or would he laugh at the owl? Lean into the memories of your dad which would answer this question. It hopefully will bring you some peace ❤️

Ohyesiwill2 · 03/10/2026 06:00

I think the owl looks fine. I am very sorry for your loss.

Auntietoseven · 03/10/2026 06:03

So sorry that you lost your dad. Parents hold a really special place in the hearts of their children. It's the natural norder for children to lose parents and when I lost my dad, I remember thinking how can something so natural be so cruel. It's so hard.

I admit I didnt read the while post but I think the barn owls (both pictures) look lovely. They both definitely have heart shaped faces. The pillows too look lovely.

Gotthattee · 03/10/2026 06:09

I really like the barn owl, I was expecting something awful.
The mix up with the single flowers isn't good but, gently, I think a lot of this is your grief speaking. I'm so sorry for your loss

Bigfattwat · 03/10/2026 06:12

I am sorry for your loss.

Someone did something at the time of my mum’s death that I’ll never forgive.

gently, none of this is catastrophic. The owl and the pillow look fine to me, and the issues with the flowers at the grave was probably just miscommunication.

Ooodelally · 03/10/2026 06:18

I am very sorry for your loss. The owl isn’t as nice but is serviceable, I was worried it would have been so bad people would have laughed at it and I don’t think that would have been the case. The pillow flowers are not great and I wouldn’t have been happy with that. Not providing the specific flowers and not delivering them as agreed (or speaking with you personally about changes) I would find to be unforgivable.

luckylavender · 03/10/2026 06:18

I lost my mother and father in the last 3 years. I’m an only child. Something went very wrong with the music at my Dad’s funeral, which was very significant to us. But I chose not to fixate on it as it was no one’s fault. Sorry for your loss.
