AIBU to be really disappointed with my dad’s funeral flowers and how this was handled?
My dad died very suddenly at the beginning of September and his funeral was this week. I was his only biological daughter and organised a lot of his funeral, so I completely accept that emotions are very high at the moment and I genuinely want some outside opinions on whether I’m being unreasonable.
The florist actually knew my dad personally, so this wasn’t just a completely anonymous order.
I ordered several things from her: a coffin spray for £180, DAD letters for £150, a 3D barn owl for £160, and individual flowers for members of the family to place on Dad’s coffin during the committal.
I want to be completely fair from the start: the coffin spray and the DAD letters were lovely. I was really happy with those and I’ve told the florist that. This isn’t me saying everything she did was awful, because it wasn’t.
There are, however, two things that have really upset me.
Firstly, the barn owl.
Dad loved barn owls, so I wanted a 3D barn owl tribute for him. I sent the florist a reference photograph showing the sort of owl I wanted.
I obviously wasn’t expecting a carbon copy. I appreciate that floristry is creative work and every florist will produce something slightly different.
But when I saw the finished owl, I was honestly really shocked by how different it was from the reference.
The reference had the very distinctive heart-shaped face of a barn owl and quite realistic features. What we received looked completely different to me, particularly around the face and eyes.
I’ll attach photographs of both so people can make their own minds up rather than relying on my description.
The florist has since explained that she never copies another florist’s work and that she spent a long time making the owl.
I genuinely appreciate the work that went into it, but my feeling is that if the reference I’d supplied wasn’t something she was prepared or able to recreate reasonably closely, I would rather have been told that when I ordered it. I could then have decided whether I still wanted to go ahead.
It cost £160, so I don’t think it was unreasonable to expect the finished tribute to at least be recognisably similar to the example I’d provided.
There was also the condition of some of the flowers.
I went back to the funeral directors to collect Dad’s flowers less than 24 hours after they had been delivered. Some of the white flowers already looked quite dull/cream and some of the roses looked dry and tired.
What made me notice it particularly was that there were flowers there from other funerals which still looked incredibly fresh in comparison.
The florist has said that her flowers come from Holland and were fresh, and I’m not suggesting that she deliberately used old flowers. I’m simply saying that, for whatever reason, some of ours didn’t seem to last particularly well.
However, the individual flowers are the part I’m actually most upset about.
This wasn’t just an additional bunch of flowers I’d ordered.
It was a planned part of Dad’s funeral service.
I wanted each member of our immediate family to have an individual flower that we would place on top of Dad’s coffin at the committal.
I sent the florist a list of exactly what we needed, with specific flowers/colours for different people. This included things such as sunflowers and blue flowers.
The florist knew Dad personally and the original plan was that she was attending his funeral.
When we discussed these individual flowers, she actually explained to me that normally she would deliver them to the funeral directors along with all of the other funeral flowers, but because she was coming to Dad’s funeral herself, she would bring the individual flowers with her.
So that was the arrangement I understood we had.
I wasn’t subsequently told that arrangement had changed.
Dad’s funeral took place and eventually we reached the committal.
The celebrant started the part of the service where we were supposed to place our individual flowers on Dad’s coffin.
And I immediately started looking around for the florist.
I wasn’t just assuming that a florist would normally attend a funeral or randomly expecting her to produce the flowers.
I was looking for her because she had specifically told me that rather than delivering those particular flowers with everything else, she would bring them with her because she was attending the funeral.
But she wasn’t there.
We were all looking around wondering where the flowers were.
It was incredibly awkward because this was happening during the actual committal of my dad.
Eventually we had to ask the funeral directors whether any individual flowers had been delivered.
They had no idea what we were talking about.
Someone had to go and look for them and they eventually found what appeared to be a bunch/box of loose flowers in the hearse.
We were then trying to work out whether these were even the flowers we’d ordered because they didn’t appear to match my list. There were no sunflowers or blue flowers, for example.
By that point the whole moment had gone anyway.
I’ve since found out that the florist had delivered some loose individual flowers to the funeral directors after all.
Apparently she arrived as they were locking up.
The funeral directors have told me that when she delivered the owl she gave them specific instructions regarding how it needed to be handled/carried, and those instructions were written down.
However, they have told me that they were not told that the individual flowers were for the committal or that they needed to be brought into the service and handed to the family.
So as far as they were concerned, they were simply some flowers that had been delivered for the funeral.
The florist says that she did tell the funeral directors that they were the individual flowers.
The funeral directors say she didn’t.
They’ve told me that if they’d been told those flowers were specifically required for the committal, it would have been written down with the other instructions, just as the instructions about handling the owl were.
Obviously I wasn’t physically standing there when that conversation took place, so I can’t categorically tell anybody which version is correct.
What I do know is what was agreed directly with me.
I had specifically been told that normally the individual flowers would be delivered with everything else, but because she was attending Dad’s funeral, she would bring them herself.
Nobody told me that plan had changed.
So when the celebrant reached that part of Dad’s service, I was sitting there looking around for her, waiting for the flowers she’d told me she would bring.
She wasn’t there, the funeral directors didn’t know they were supposed to provide them, and we never got to do it.
And that’s the part I’m really struggling with.
It might sound like “just some flowers”, but it wasn’t about the flowers themselves.
This was the final thing I had planned for us to do for Dad.
We were each supposed to walk up, place our flower on his coffin and say goodbye before his coffin disappeared.
I’ll never get that moment back.
If I’d known beforehand that the florist wasn’t attending and that the arrangement had changed, I could have made sure the funeral directors knew exactly what the flowers were for. I could have collected them myself. I could have asked somebody else to be responsible for them. There were so many ways it could have been sorted.
But I didn’t know there was anything that needed sorting.
I’ve since spoken to the florist about all of this.
She sent me a long voice note explaining that she spent ages making the owl, that she doesn’t copy other florists’ work, that her flowers come from Holland and were fresh, and that she did tell the funeral directors what the individual flowers were for.
I have tried to be fair with her. I’ve told her that the DAD letters and Dad’s coffin spray were lovely and that I appreciate the work that went into them.
I also completely understand why she ultimately couldn’t attend the funeral. I’m not angry with her for that and I made that clear to her. Things happen and sometimes people simply can’t attend.
My issue is that I didn’t know the arrangement for those flowers had changed when their delivery was tied specifically to her attending.
I’ve also explained that I’ve been to funerals before where family members have placed individual flowers on the coffin, so if what I’d asked for wasn’t possible or wasn’t something she could reliably arrange, I’d have preferred to have been told and I would have made other arrangements.
I’m not looking to destroy someone’s business and I’m not saying that everything she made was terrible.
I’m just incredibly disappointed.
Part of me is also questioning myself because this is all so raw and it was my dad’s funeral. Maybe I’m focusing on things more because I’m grieving.
So I genuinely want outside opinions.
AIBU to be upset about how this was handled?
And separately, looking purely at the floristry and ignoring everything else, would you have been happy with the £160 barn owl compared with the reference photograph?
I’ll attach the reference picture, the owl we received, the DAD letters, coffin spray and photographs of the condition of the flowers less than 24 hours later so people can judge it fairly for themselves.

AIBU to be really disappointed with my dad’s funeral flowers and how this was handled?

Honestly, I think she did an excellent job with that owl. I also think £160 was incredibly reasonable, that would have been well over £200 with any florist I've used.

Goodwitchglenda · 03/10/2026 06:32

So sorry for your loss. I think the owl is rather sweet, and in your grief you are finding flaws where there are none really. The flowers could have been better handled but miscommunications happen. I think you are channelling your grief into this in a way that won’t help you in the long run

LaurieFairyCake · 03/10/2026 06:40

The owl is fine. The flowers are fine.

the mix up over the committal flowers is very upsetting as you won’t get that back Flowers but you have no choice now but to try to let it go once you’ve allowed yourself to be angry about it.

JustGoogleIt15 · 03/10/2026 06:40

I think the florist did an amazing job. A beautiful owl ! Perhaps your grief is clouding what you see? Quite understandable as it's such early days

SeedsOfReason · 03/10/2026 06:52

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The owl I genuinely think the owl is lovely, it's very clearly an owl and it has a sweet face. It isn't an exact copy of the reference owl but I think it's unrealistic to expect that when it's something the florist is probably doing for the first time. I am sure your dad would have appreciated the owl, your thoughtfulness in arranging one and the time the florist must have spent on it, as it's quite complicated.
The individual flowers There was clearly a communication breakdown here and it's very sad that this spoiled a special moment you had planned. I don't think there is anything to be gained by investigating any further into what went wrong - as you say, the moment has passed.

I think you are correct when you say Maybe I’m focusing on things more because I’m grieving. It's widely acknowledged that organising a funeral serves a function in giving people a focus during the very early stages of grief. Once the funeral is over, that focus has gone. You may be clinging onto that focus by dwelling onto the issues with the flowers, which is totally understandable.

But you do need to find a way to let go of this. In straightforward terms, what is the outcome you want? You have complained, the florist and the funeral directors are aware of what happened, what is it you now want them to do?

I hope that you will soon be able to make peace with this situation. Things didn't go absolutely perfectly, but your dad had a thoughtfully planned funeral, a send-off surrounded by his loved ones, and very appropriate and (I think) lovely floral arrangements in the form of the owl, the wreath and the 'Dad' tribute. You have honoured his memory and that's what matters. Flowers

I mean, a barn owl made of flowers (!) was never going to turn out great but that was your call.

🙄 There’s always one I suppose. If you can’t say something kind…….

MyNoisyBee · 03/10/2026 07:25

I’m really sorry for your loss OP. My dad died recently and his funeral was at the start of September. I really do understand how important it is to feel like the funeral has gone to plan.
I actually like the barn owl, I know it isn’t exactly like the reference photo but I think the florist has done a good job. The other flowers are lovely too. I am sure that all the attendees thought the same.
I understand why you are upset about the mix up with the individual flowers, but I think you could drive yourself demented trying to get someone to take responsibility. Could you go with other family members to the grave or another spot (eg river, woodland) and lay some flowers?
I agree with previous posters that the committal is not the last thing you can do for your dad. I’ve found it helpful to think of the funeral as being about my dad’s body, but carrying on living my life in a way that would make him proud is really a better tribute. I really hope you can find a way to make your peace with what happened at the funeral. Sending hugs.

AmnesiacDream · 03/10/2026 07:39

I agree with most posters that being hugely upset about it is grief transference. Which is to be expected and totally normal.

Nevertheless, I think the florist's service was substandard. I see why you find the barn owl disappointing, though I think very few florists would actually be skilled enough to create something as well done as the reference photograph and she should probably have managed your expectations better. The state of a few flowers wasn't really great but sounds like just a few out of quite a large order?

The poorest part though, was the lack of communication about the individual flowers. That was appalling. Assuming her recollection of what she did was accurate and the undertaker's recollection was off, her approach - to verbally tell the Undertakers about them when it was a change of plans and she had written down other stuff but not that and had NOT communicated it to you was incredibly shoddy. Not nearly good enough. Not what she had committed to. Also, it sounds like she didn't provide the flowers she had agreed to for that, even once you found them? I think it's reasonable to expect a refund on those flowers.

But none of this is the devastation you're feeling. You say about laying the flowers - I’ll never get that moment back. I would gently suggest, while that moment would have been nice, it's not what you've lost. That moment isn't what's important. What you've lost is your father. And you're projecting that huge loss onto this one moment.

The flowers did not go as well as they could have. I think you have reason to be disappointed in the service you received. But the loss of your Dad is what you're feeling right now. The flowers really aren't in the same league.

Let it go.

And also, use your own words, the massive AI post is unnecessary. But I am sorry for your loss.

There's a lot of detail in that post - if OP has used AI to organise her thoughts at a time of grief and probably not thinking clearly, so what? I can't tell one way or another, but if it was AI it was a very long and detailed prompt, I don't think it's fair to say OP hasn't input her own words and thoughts however the post was composed.

Ellie1015 · 03/10/2026 07:48

The barn owl is fine to me. It is an unusual request and you can tell it is an owl even if not as good as the first photo.

Completely understand why you were upset the individual flowers were not available at the right point in the service. Florist should have told you she wasnt attending. Perhaps she didn't want to bother you night before funeral and assumed funeral directors understood. However I think she should have let you know.

Tel12 · 03/10/2026 07:53

The owl is lovely and in the scheme of things this really isn't something to focus on. Sounds like miscommunication overall. Plant a tree or something appropriate and long lasting in memory of your dad and focus on the positives. I'm sorry for your loss.

Wordsmithery · 03/10/2026 07:56

Agree with the others. This is the grief speaking.
Sorry for your loss. 💐

Morecoffeeneedef · 03/10/2026 08:01

So sorry for the sudden loss of your Dad , it must have been terrible.
The florist could have done better but she hasn't made you feel like this. You miss your dad. You gave him the most thoughtful send off possible and he would have been proud of you.

VashtaNerada · 03/10/2026 08:07

I actually think the owl is really sweet, and is recognisably a barn owl. The individual flowers does sound like it went horribly wrong and I completely understand why you’re so upset about it.
When you’re grieving, things that can seem small to others can become incredibly important. I hope that over time you’ll be able to put it into context of your dad’s whole life. He knew who was important to him, he knew he was loved. He wouldn’t have minded if the funeral wasn’t completely perfect.
Be kind to yourself at the moment and ask for support if you need it.

useyournoodle · 03/10/2026 08:18

@Heathercost I would actually have been embarrassed by the Owl. Had you not have said it was an Owl I genuinely would have thought it could possibly be a Sloth. I think it’s because it looks like it has arms rather than feathers tucked neatly into its side like in the reference picture.

I would also be very disappointed that the individual flowers didn’t make it to the committal. She changed the plans and didn’t let the actual person arranging the funeral know - you.

Be honest when you review her services online.

Then I’d suggest the review being ‘the close’ of the situation for you.

BeMintFatball · 03/10/2026 08:21

Did the florist take on other family members tributes as well as your own? The cushion with love mum confused me. Was that from your Nan? Aka your Dad’s mum?

The owl has a certain charm it just didn’t look realistic.

To specify what bloom to be given by X,Y and Z sounds logistically difficult. And florists have to order minimum number of blooms . My Mum also had her funeral last month. And certain elements were more costly because the florist had to order in bunches of 10.

I didn’t share my florist’s details with other mourners because I didn’t want my florist to be overstretched. I ordered a double ended coffin spray and two further wreaths. And they were everything I could have hoped for. Did my mother’s funeral go without a hitch? No. That’s the thing about the human condition, expect the unexpected.

The mix up at the burial was unfortunate but try not to dwell on it.

JenRummy · 03/10/2026 05:02

Sorry for your loss OP. Your heart must be broken. Do agree this is projecting your grief via the florals. Hard to cope with the loss so energy put into elements which at the end of the day, whilst at the time are upsetting, in the grand scheme of things, aren’t that important.

Things can and do go wrong. Placing a flower on your Dads coffin would have been a moving public tribute but sadly he’s not here, so wouldn’t know. That wasn’t the last thing you’ll do for him. He was too special to you by sounds of it for that.

You might find you carry him round in your heart and pocket every single day and a great tribute is to speak of him often, especially recalling the laughs. It’s likely he’d want you to live the best life you can and remember too whenever you want you can take flowers to his resting place or another place he loved as often as you want.

Get some rest, be extra kind to yourself and just sorry there was a slight blip to what sounded otherwise to be a very loving send off.

What a very lovely post. Absolutely agree. The flowers won't be the last or most important thing you do for him.

Is the AI ‘gotcha!’ really necessary on a post like this?

OP I’m sorry for your loss, your head must be spinning.

I think the owl and the pillow look fine. I would too be upset about the individual flowers, but it sounds like a miscommunication- and I don’t think there is anything the florist could do now that would make it less upsetting.

Your dad won’t know that the flower tribute didn’t happen. This wasn’t your final goodbye. I think in time, you will be less upset about this.

DoAWheelie · 03/10/2026 08:29

It's very normal for people to pick out one single thing they hate about a funeral or something else close to a death and focus all your negative feelings on that. It helps us vent out some of the overwhelming grief swirling around.

I was furious about the service booklets at my dad's funeral, there was nothing wrong with them really, but I needed something "smaller" to focus on and latched on to that.

Followthesunshine · 03/10/2026 08:30

The owl is very sweet. That's a lot of work for £160 and with all kindness I think your grief is making you unreasonable. There was a communication mix up with the individual flowers and that's unfortunate but you seem to have built the placing of a flower on the coffin as a big moment that you have lost and you need to try and stop putting that burden on a florist.

Dollymylove · 03/10/2026 08:35

Sorry for your loss OP.
It all sounded very complicated to put together. Sometimes simplicity is best and most memorable x

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 03/10/2026 08:36

I’m so sorry for your loss OP. The pain you are feeling is coming through the typing. Please try to eat and sleep if you can. Wishing you and your family well.

theresnolimits · 03/10/2026 08:39

OP, when I buried my dad, I’d spent ages on the Order of Service. The funeral directors left them behind. So no one knew what was happening or where to go after.

Do you know, I didn’t care. On the day I was filled with grief, anxious over my mother with dementia and just let it go. Forget about it. In the bigger picture of things, it’s nothing. Concentrate on what you did do, how loved he was and how lucky you were to have him. The rest is not important.

oviraptor21 · 03/10/2026 08:43

The owl looks fine to me - maybe more of a cute owl than an ornithologically accurate owl but to me the florist has done a great job. The pillow, I can't tell from the photos what is wrong with them.

The single flowers, if the florist was delivering all the other tributes ahead of time, why were the flowers coming separately? And why was there no check before the service started - either that she was there and/or that the flowers there? Easy to overlook though - not something to beat yourself up about. It's also possible that the specific flowers you wanted were just not available.

It is bad that, having said she was going to attend, she didn't send an apology.

I'm sorry for your loss. I do think the florist should have sent an apology (and therefore a heads up that the flowers would be arriving by a different method) and should have let you know about the change of flowers.
