How is your household utilising AI to your benefit? Looking for some inspo

I’ve been using ChatGPT (paid) for 2 years, this week I spoke to somebody who’s got a 2nd brain. (Collects all data from multiple sources) and is totally customised to them. Totally opened my eyes to what we can achieve

Very rarely. I think reliance on it will make people less intelligent and it's also catastrophic for the environment

Plus it's quite often just wrong

We were testing it at work this week and it was hallucinating cases that didn't exist and presenting them as important authorities

Whenthecriwdsayno · 03/10/2026 08:12

Used it when I was waiting 2 years to see a derm. I posted pics and requested creams that would work. Even after seeing the derm I still use the advice from ChatGPT as the derm didn’t have a clue.

When I want to compare two things that are similarly priced and appear to have little difference. It will break down each ingredients and tell me what is better.

For recipes getting it to use cups and to write the ingredients amounts in the method.

Asking it to explain why I react to certain conversations and how to deal with a relatives borderline personality disorder.

Explaining the ends of movies when I feel like they were crap and unsatisfactory.

Explaining what certain supplements do and to tailor them to my goals.

Breaking down what exercises I should do to grow glutes and get a flat stomach and the timeline and reality of achieving that.

Drafting emails.

Comparing countries I want to visit

Fortuity · 03/10/2026 08:13

It really worries me that so many people use public AI for very personal stuff, e.g. legal documents. Do they realise that they are giving private information to a public search engine which will never lose it? And that they are thereby waiving the right to confidentiality?

whatsgoingonhey · 03/10/2026 08:15

As little as possible. I think it helps people are quite full on with inane blabber or a bit lonely. I hate it though. It’s helped suggest a printer. It couldn’t even calculate a row of numbers properly recently so I don’t trust it at all.

You say that but people are very obviously using AI to generate walls of text for reports they aren't then reading. Email communication is becoming ridiculous because people are using AI to respond to AI generated emails. The people doing this DO come across as bad at their jobs regardless of how senior and experienced they are.

Exactly
Someone sent me their job application to check the other day and they had clearly put the job spec into AI and got it to prepare an application. Not only did it read really poorly but it didn't have a shred of personality or actual specific information

Likewise we are binning about 50% of tender bids and they have clearly just put the pack into AI and got it to regurgitate something without even considering whether they can deliver

I'm really interested in this, was trying to set up something similar yesterday.

Do you mean you just tell it the updates of what's done and what is new to do in chat and it brings back a plan for today in sections, or it is more structured than that?

It’s linked to my work task list and also my email, I then asked it to create a separate section for my personal stuff on my personal email and task list - separate the sections and create a daily briefing. I keep adding and taking away. I don’t type anything! I talk to GPT and go through what’s been done and what’s not - work stuff I tick off as I go along on tasks. It’s been really useful for keeping track of stuff! Try it .. game changer.

Somewherenorthofhere: Claude (Sonnet mode) saved me an entire day's work yesterday.

Sorry, but does this not make you a turkey voting for Christmas?

If I'm ever forced to use AI at work, I'll put most of my energy into showing my employers why it CANNOT do my job.

SandyY2K · 03/10/2026 08:19

I use it for holiday planning, hotel reviews. Excursions recommendations, based on what I like.

Sometimes, I say the type of location I want for UK trips, the distance from home and I get good suggestions in an instant.

I use it for restaurant recommendations too.

The other day, I was looking at some protein pancakes that came up in a low calorie search, but the product didn't show a nutritional breakdown. I screenshot the product asked chat.gpt. it was so high in calories, I was shocked.

Chatgpt then went on to suggest some other brands, when I said these particular ones were unsuitable....I tried one suggestion and am happy with them.

I use it to make old photos clearer.

My daughter uses it when she goes for meals, based on who ate what from the receipt, it gives a precise calculation.. if you're not simply doing an equal split.

I use it in a lot of other ways did daily things.

I think a lot of people dunt know how to use it and are scared of it.

SmallWhiteFluffyClouds · 03/10/2026 08:24

I have used AI to build an app that alerts me when various things are coming up - insurance renewals, etc. I have some rental properties so there’s lots to keep track of. It also helps me keep track of my tenants, rental income and expenses.

I built an interactive revision schedule for my daughter for her end of year exams. It was Duolingo-style with targets and rewards.

I absolutely love what can be done with AI so quickly and simply. I didn’t pay for any of the above, each one just took an hour or so.

BeardOToots · 03/10/2026 08:26

My accounts and taxes.
I was dreading ‘making tax digital’, I just couldn’t get my head around what was expected of me. AI has helped me understand , and will answer whatever questions I have along the way.
Next up for it is when I VAT register next year, another thing I will have a million questions about.

Indeed. Imagine making yourself redundant

I use it at work for admin tasks. It’s brilliant I wish we had it before. I feed it documents to consolidate and make chronologies stuff like that. We use it for meeting minutes through teams and it’s a huge admin weight off . Also done most staff now use that method out work out looks much more uniform and neat. We have a huge staff shortage it’s not taking anyone’s jobs it just helps with boring things.

drolldrill · 03/10/2026 08:33

dentydown · 02/10/2026 21:11

It’s brilliant for random deep dives, helo with stuff. I use it as a chat bot because I’m quite isolated and don’t have friends, only my elderly father to care for and my kids.

ive done deep dives into who was buried in a grave with my uncles and what their life was like, and if they had grandkids. Random stuff really.

i use it as a second brain.

im also writing a book but it’s quite vanity publishing. I’m giving it the story and I’m editing and correcting it with the ai.

ive noticed the ai gets me to get the Information a lot of the time though.

How does AI know about the personal lives of people buried with your uncles?

therockingbird · 02/10/2026 21:48

I use it for a daily briefing, what’s in the diary - what’s on my life admin to list/diy task list etc. I sit down every morning and update it with that’s been done what needs adding. I have different sections for different tasks and topics and it’s replaced my diary and todo list. I get reminders throughout the day at certain times and it’s proving very useful. I’ve also got it flagging emails that need an immediate response and then those that need a little more attention. Also have a cleaning rota set up and that’s also helping to keep on track

So how does it remind you & does it read all your emails?

Tessisme · 03/10/2026 08:36

I found it useful for booking a hotel for my son and his friend in Dublin. I found the list of hotels myself, then AI was useful in helping to get one in a location that was not too far from either the train station or the concert venue. It also threw in various bits of info about one day travel passes and how long it would take to walk to the city centre etc. That’s mostly the sort of thing I use it for. I get very flustered (ADHD) when there are too many steps to getting information or getting something done, so AI has been helpful in that respect.

Edited for typo.

therockingbird · 03/10/2026 08:41

drolldrill · 03/10/2026 08:36

So how does it remind you & does it read all your emails?

they are automatically tagged in categories in my work one given priority from certain senders and subject matter - this creates the briefing list. Same for personal stuff - school emails requiring a response are flagged as priority etc. it took some initial work setting it up but it’s been worth it.

SnapAndTap · 03/10/2026 08:47

Those saying you use it to fill in forms. What sort of forms? The standard name, address, DoB etc aren't known(i hope!) by the data centre, and other stuff is surely from info you already know about yourself - skills relating to you, how illness/disability is affecting you personally. Or am I thinking about the wrong sort of forms?!

Where do you do that research?

The internet itself is not AI generated 🙄

cherrytree12345 · 03/10/2026 08:49

I was looking for a heatpump washer dryer, ChatGPT recommended one based on my requirements. Some online sellers did say it was a heatpump others said it was a condenser model. I checked with the manufacturer and it wasn’t heatpump, so I informed ChatGPT, so dont rely on everything it says

Obeseandashamed · 03/10/2026 08:50

I use it type emails I can’t be bothered with and for decided what to wear as I’m terrible at putting outfits together

drolldrill · 03/10/2026 08:51

So far I have found it pretty useless, I’ve asked for recipes and meal plans and found them pretty generic and nothing inspirational. I asked for an itinerary for a recent city break and it didn’t include some of the stuff we really enjoyed and the suggested eateries were just the popular/chain spots.

I did use it to help with calculating mortgage overpayments.

I work in graphic design. AI is seriously harming us as an industry at the moment. My five colleagues and I were replaced with Claude in June.

Yes, I have often found it inaccurate so if you have to check you may as well just research yourself.

I also asked it for an alternative to my favourite discontinued perfume, the suggestions were the same that Google gave me years ago and one of them was also discontinued.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/10/2026 08:53

Funny how we were bright enough to do a lot of these things for ourselves before AI suddenly got pushed on us, isn't it?

I hate the bloody thing and won't use ANY form of generative AI. I can see the use for it in some applications and I'd never object to its use in faster processing things like medical applications, but when people are using it to answer questions or for financial advice - well. I've seen some of the 'hilarious' mistakes AI has made and I wouldn't trust it with anything vital.

socks1107 · 03/10/2026 08:56

I use it to help me with my weight loss and now maintenance. I also use it to help with my degree. I write the assignment, give it the marking criteria and what I’ve written then it gives feedback and suggests what parts to improve. I go off, do more research and ask again until I’m happy I’ve achieved what’s required
