Neighbours’ wind chimes

Our elderly neighbours have large, noisy wind chimes.
We live in quite a windy area so they are fairly constantly dinging away. I think they are decent quality ones so it’s not a horrendous noise but it is pretty much 24-7 and it gets annoying.

You can hear it in some rooms of the house even with the windows shut and doors closed.
And when doors/windows are open or we are in our garden they are very loud.

The reason I’ve not said anything before is that we are not a very quiet household ourselves. The kids play outside and the dog barks sometimes but the difference is that these noises don’t happen all hours of the day and I do try to minimise them.

We’ve had 2 visitors recently who commented that the wind chimes kept them awake.
I’m in 2 minds as to whether to mention it to neighbours or not. Maybe ask if they could take them in at night when it’s particularly windy?

YANBU- ask them to take them in at night (and hopefully they’ll forget to put them back out again)

YABU- you’ve got a nerve when your kids and dog make noise too

Say nothing and cut them down in the middle of the night. Deny all knowledge and sleep peacefully 😁

OffTheMap · 27/09/2026 17:18

Just explain that you can’t hear them all night and ask if it would be ok to take them down

Awful bloody things.

If I had a barking dog next dog then I would get wind chimes! Can you work on your dog? My friend stopped her dog barking by bringing it in every single time it barked.

somanychristmaslights · 27/09/2026 17:23

Yes I would ask them to take them down. They might not be hearing them! No harm in asking.

Of course we do this-we don’t leave her barking outside. Unfortunately some dogs are just barky and other dogs barking nearby around set her off.
I agree that barking is worse than wind chimes but barking is brief, during day time and stopped asap.

I went round and asked my neighbours to take theirs down pre kids (I was about 25). I was an insomniac and they drove me insane. I’m not sure whether I’d have the audacity now I have kids tho. And it’s not you not sleeping every night. Just guests… So probably YABU (context is king!)

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 27/09/2026 17:25

I agree they are horrible, selfish things but would prefer wind chimes to the noise of children or dogs.

I would also add that having a good relationship with your neighbour is worth putting up with the wind-chimes.

Foolish1984 · 27/09/2026 17:34

YADNBU if they’re keeping people awake! Trouble is, there’s so many dog-haters out there who will read that your dog woofs occasionally and that will be all they take from this and will immediately assume you leave it barking all day every day, no matter what you say to the contrary.
Back in the real world, of course it’s unreasonable of them and absolutely doesn’t compare to children playing and the occasional reactive & brief bout of barking. Any noise, no matter what it is, if repetitive over a long period of time will drive even the most patient of people over the edge!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/09/2026 17:35

I'd ask your neighbours if they can hear them first. If they are elderly they might have lost hearing in the range at which the chimes are chiming (I'm older myself and I can't hear some things which drive my kids up the wall). If they say 'no', then you can ask them if they will take them down (why have they even got them up if they can't hear them?). If they say 'yes', then maybe you could ask if the chimes bother them because they sometimes bother you when it's very windy overnight and ask if they could move them somewhere away from your windows? If they say 'yes, we love them, the noise really cheers us up!' then sorry, I'm out of ideas. I'd probably sneak round late one night and sabotage them. The chimes, I mean, not your neighbours.

Bellyblueboy · 27/09/2026 18:21

I hate them. Me neighbours also have them and I can’t sleep with my window open anymore because the noise wakes me up.

i have decided that people who have them must be completely selfish because they know they are loud and know others can hear - partly on windy nights. My neighbors keep theirs up year round and it is very windy in the winter here and we are very exposed: when they blow away they just replace them😩

AshCullen1894 · 27/09/2026 18:30

Your neighbours are probably hard of hearing so don't realise. Sabotage them and blame the youth of today.

Jut do not believe that

You're insane. Or hard of hearing. If you like wind chimes, use an app on your phone or keep them indoors near a fan.

You have no right to inflict a 24/7 noise disturbance on others around you.

I started getting tinnitus in my own home because of wind chimes. Like listening to a phone ringing non-stop, it will drive you insane.

People's brains work differently so a noise you like might be like nails on a chalkboard to someone else.

So just keep the noise indoors.

I think I am mostly used to them so zone them out most of the time plus my room is at the front but 2 people commented unprompted so they definitely do.

My neighbour's windchimes were cut down one night. I know who did it (not me, but it crossed my mind), and it's a secret I'll take to my grave 😄

MyLimeGuide · 27/09/2026 19:06

Wind chimes are cool, good vibes for the Halloween season 👻

Crocm · 27/09/2026 19:06

I wonder if I could reach them with a hook

Rather have wind chimes rather than noisy children and a dog barking. If they don't complain about your noise it's a bit icy a cheeky to moan about theirs as you said you are not a quiet family

CeramicRoses · 27/09/2026 19:34

I’d be more direct, polite but direct. We can hear your wind chimes all the time, I’d be really grateful if you could take them down. The difference between wind chimes and dogs and kids is the latter are living, breathing entities that can’t be quiet all the time. If they object on those grounds, I’d politely point that out. Wind chimes are pointless instruments of noise torture that serve no purpose. I mean what does anyone get out of them? I say this as someone who is child free by choice and doesn’t enjoy the noise of kids or dogs but recognises it can’t be helped. Failing that I’d remove them myself, the long pole with a hook sounds promising.

HettyTagliatelli · 27/09/2026 21:16

People who have wind chimes choose to have them knowing that they’re going to make a noise that other people might not like and they do it anyway. Selfish fuckers.

Ignore posters who are comparing the normal family sounds made by children and a pet to the constant annoyance of wind chimes. They are not remotely the same.

You're right, that in most cases they don't care, but my NDN has some on his 'special shed' at the bottom of his garden and I think he hasn't given it a thought that other people may a) hear them loud and clear, bottom of garden or not and b)they may not like them.

However, he's a bit tricky so I swear quietly instead .They're just too far away for the pole and hook method, otherwise they'd be gone, though I'd be prime suspect.

Anyone who loves that random, discordant ding dang clang can hang them in their house and enjoy them alone!

This!
I did exactly this years ago when my neighbour installed what sounded like big Ben chimes right on the edge of our dividing fence. They were bloody awful.
So he went on holiday, and I cut them down .
No mention of them from either of us was ever made, and he never replaced them either .

whippersnapper55 · 27/09/2026 22:17

You admit you're a fairly noisy family yourselves - is there any chance they've put up wind chimes on retaliation?
