To be agreeing with new conservative benefits proposal re alcohol etc

They will cut benefits for people that haven't paid into the system and been unemployed for over 6 months (don't quote me on that number ) by 30 % and it will be given on a prepaid type card. Meaning it won't be accepted by betting shops, for alcohol or cigarettes. I feel that's right . Why should tax payers money be spent on funding cigarettes etc but I have no problem with funding the basics like food etc.
Thoughts?
Basically you will claim full benefits if you've worked and paid into the system. Should reduce generational unemployment hopefully

Enough to live on is quite subjective.

NMV is £25-26k a year. What amount would you like it to be? £30k? £50k?

Enough to no longer require government subsidy to pay rent, feed and clothe yourself and pay the bills. Not much to ask, is it?

Wingingit73 · Today 16:58

I pay into a system that i may need to rely on one day. 6 months is nothing. I hate to see people waste on drink and cigarettes but im not here to judge.
The welfare system is not favourable to Tories because they do not care about those in need.

I just need to go into my town centre where all the unemployed hang out. Drinking, smoking, showing off their tattoos.

How do you know they are all unemployed?

How many hours would you like to work to get this?

LakieLady · Today 17:00

I was under the impression you used to only be able to claim benefits once you had paid NI into the system.

As long as I can remember there have been 2 types of benefit for working-age people: contribution based, for those who'd paid the required NI contributions, and income related, for those with low or nil incomes.

Prior to UC, you could claim Income Support if you had no other income, before IS the equivalent benefit was called Supplementary Benefit.

Clearly it is too much to ask if you won’t put a figure on it!

@KarenWheeler But if those genuinely are the problems with the system, then I don't see how this is a solution. You seem to be implying that you're talking about people committing benefit fraud - and this proposed system would be wide open to fraud and misuse, making it incredibly costly to administer.

We need real, pragmatic solutions not performatitive ideas that could actually end up costing the tax payer more money.

A DWP worker talking about people committing benefit fraud and doing nothing about it.

The standard 40 works.

Just look at them and ask yourself who would give them a job? There are bus stops in the town where I live where I won't get off because there are street drinkers drinking in them. I would rather get off a stop earlier or later. There is a prohibition order banning drinking in that part of town but it is never enforced.

I can’t put a figure on it. It’s locality dependent for the biggest element, ie housing. You see these things aren’t simple.

FedUpCelery · Today 17:03

I don't see the point. 30% on payment card that couldn't be spent on certain things, but 70% paid as normal?
Have I misunderstood?

Then why are you so fixated on them getting one? It’s a nonsense argument if you consider them unemployable.

Not everyone on benefits smokes or drinks - the majority are living hand to mouth. How on earth do you think a single person living on £60 per week, paying bills and fares to interviews is going to survive ? How is a single parent family going to feed and cloth their children with a 30% drop ? Benefit rates are barely enough to live on and cutting them will put many many into absolute poverty

In the UK, 17.5% of unemployed individuals smoke compared to 9.9% of those in paid employment. 1] Office for National Statistics

The high and mighty "my money is paying for your lifestyle" brigade. Other people's tax money is paying for the call out for your horse-riding and skiing accidents and I guarantee they'll never be able to afford either hobby.

This is actually a really interesting point, and I think it hits the nail on the head of why anyone with any libertarian instincts at all should be very wary of policies like this - in my opinion, we should all be wary of this level of government interference over the lifestyle and choices of private individuals.

Do you not understand how discussion boards work? Once more, with crayons - I was responding to a particular post.

I'm not annoyed; I'm just pointing out the context of my post which you evidently completely missed.

And I was responding to yours, I’m pretty sure that’s exactly how discussion boards work. Keep your crayons, I’ve got my own. 😘

All the unemployed in your town are not hanging out in the town centre.
You must spend a lot of time in your town centre watching what is going on.
Are tattoos on the banned list?

Which depends on shop staff managing the system and process, and likely means only some shops would accept them
at all.

Another poster has suggested the Rooster card, which is owned by (I think) NatWest. Who I’m sure will be thrilled to give the model away to government for free.

No it dosnt, I have never needed staff to scan my bar codes.

LakieLady · Today 17:07

PinkFruitbat · Today 16:37

So how much would you like the NMW to be?

The amount that is sufficient to live on would vary according to local rents. It would be higher in (eg) Brighton than in Bradford.

FedUpCelery · Today 17:07

OneFastPinkTraybake · Today 17:05

Nope. 30 per cent cut to benefit

Ok so that would be hugely complicated. If someone needed to pay a tradesman, how would it work?

I fear it would be the start of a programmable CBDC for all of us.

£13.45 per hour. £14.80 per hour in London.
