They will cut benefits for people that haven't paid into the system and been unemployed for over 6 months (don't quote me on that number ) by 30 % and it will be given on a prepaid type card. Meaning it won't be accepted by betting shops, for alcohol or cigarettes. I feel that's right . Why should tax payers money be spent on funding cigarettes etc but I have no problem with funding the basics like food etc.
Thoughts?
Basically you will claim full benefits if you've worked and paid into the system. Should reduce generational unemployment hopefully

What does a "claimant type" look like? Do tell.

Pay enough without the need of benefit top ups. That would lower the welfare bill.

In this context I mean at least the minimum FT wage as opposed to the benefit rate,

You wouldn't want to undercut jobs, would you?

The minimum wage has soared recently - from one of the lowest in the OECD to one of the highest. This is one of the reasons given by Jim Ratcliffe for mothballing UK plants. It’s expensive to run a business in the UK.

if we reduce minimum wage people suffer though because costs are so high. We need to address the cost of living in the UK - and by that I mean the cost of housing and utilities. So many governments have promised to meet housing targets and they’ve all failed. All of them. Cause they don’t want to devalue the inflated house prices of pensioners, and they don’t want to tell NIMBYs that it’s fair that EVERYONE gets a house, not just them.

Energy costs are so high because:

  1. lefty idiots panicking about the idea of nuclear power for decades. Can’t they separate the phrases ‘nuclear power station’ from ‘nuclear weapons’. It appears not.
  2. single handedly trying to save the planet while other nations pump whatever they like into the atmosphere.

If we brought energy costs and housing costs down towards eu average we could actually have enough money to start living and we wouldn’t need a skyhigh minimum wage.

PinkFruitbat · Today 15:51

DuncinToffee · Today 15:46

I can't answer that, you could try googling and anyway I explained the context which you are ignoring

Do you think people should work for the lower benefit rate?

It’s really up to the people who say they aren’t earning enough to say what they do earn and what they think they are entitled to earn.

Single people over 25 get 434 pounds a month on UC. How does that equate to being richer than someone in work

Actually hilarious. Do you think there are enough charity shops to accommodate everyone out of work ?

Helping in care homes for 100 quid a week. 25 hours. 4 quid an hour? A third of min wage. There's a name for that. Slave labour

Imo, it's ludicrous that care staff are rarely on more than a few pence above NMW, given what challenging work it is. "Helping" in care homes should only be done by those who have a genuine desire to do the work, not someone on some forced labour scheme.

How are they likely to react the first time a resident spits at them, bites them, or tries to rub shit in their hair, all of which have happened to a carer friend in the last year or two?

And care home owners are quite rich enough without forcing some poor sap to do the job for next to fuck all.

Not care homes but as an adult who will need care when their parents can no longer help I don't want someone helping me because the job centre told them to. I want someone who does it because it's what they want to do

Sorry what? I paid into the system for over 25 years before I went on UC after being made redundant.

The purpose of child benefit is to help parents with the cost of rearing their children, so I’m not sure why you think parents should be allowed to use it to buy alcohol or cigarettes??

Very puzzling.

Was it in Adrian Mole that the mother spent the child benefit on "gin and cigarettes" because that's what she reckoned she needed to cope with being a parent?

MabelMarple · Today 15:56

The Victorians introduced a form of welfare called the workhouse. They categorised the poor as deserving poor, undeserving poor and vagrants. It seems we are going back to the 19th century.
The poorest people will have no choice where to shop. No ability to compare prices, at the mercy of the shops who accept the vouchers.
Those who are irresponsible will sell the stuff to get cash for drugs / cigs and their children will suffer. Those who are responsible but unemployed will be humiliated.

Holidayhooha · Today 15:56

My son is severley disabled he will never pay into the system.

What about people who are neither disabled nor caring and have never paid ?

thisfilmisboring123 · Today 15:58

Those who are actually in favour of this?

Why?
Why are you so arsed what ‘scum’ are spending their money on?
They’d just spend it on something else instead.

It won’t save anything and in fact, the opposite, would cost a shitload to implement.

Do you really think this is a necessary use of taxpayer money?

EscCtrl · Today 15:58

Yer I agree, as long as it applies to the state pension as well. [only joking] must have been triggered by that phrase "generational unemployment".

You somehow missed the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Trump bombing Iran?

Ratcliffe could pay his taxes in the UK if he is so concerned.

Work for your benefit, why not pay the going rate for the job?

probably non viable for these businesses to pay a wage equivalent to NMW + UC. So their staff are effectively supported by the state.

a capitalist would say, let these businesses fail. Then the market will find the appropriate cost model.

Cheap undercutting labour is your solution?

You are still avoiding to answer the working for benefits question. Why not pay the going rate?

The going rate is defined by the market.

However the market is currently subsided.

Remove the subsidy and the true going rate will be determined.

Overthemoun · Today 16:05

It’s an attempt at vote winning really.

but carrot = making work worthwhile
and stick = making benefits suitably painful - to try and get away from the current reliance on benefits is to be welcomed I suppose. The system shouldn’t be abuse able but should support those who need it.

I think the US uses food stamps? It’s that sort of system isn’t it.

personally, my wish list would be to sort out the tax bands and personal allowance - if it had risen in line with inflation we would all be around £300/month better off apparently.

get rid of universal free meals for KS1 and have a higher threshold for free for school meals - applicable for all up to a household income I mean.

if Facebook comments are all to be believed, I think the party who has a hard line on migration will win.
