They will cut benefits for people that haven't paid into the system and been unemployed for over 6 months (don't quote me on that number ) by 30 % and it will be given on a prepaid type card. Meaning it won't be accepted by betting shops, for alcohol or cigarettes. I feel that's right . Why should tax payers money be spent on funding cigarettes etc but I have no problem with funding the basics like food etc.
Thoughts?
Basically you will claim full benefits if you've worked and paid into the system. Should reduce generational unemployment hopefully

It couldn’t work that way. Tesco are not going to check your shopping for an alcopop. It would have to be restricted to individual small shops where the shopkeeper packs your shopping. So no petrol. No clothes. Only expensive groceries.

The manned or self check out manages every single time I use it.... it won't let me proceed with the purchase if it has alcohol in it until somebody hits the 'challenge 25 button', so totally possible at the retailer end with a small software upgrade or "The NatWest Rooster Card blocks alcohol purchases by automatically declining transactions at merchants registered under restricted 18+ category codes" so that is how it would work at the bank/ government end.

It really isn't very high tech.

I must have imagined 3.1million unemployed thanks to Margaret Thatcher's policies precipitating a catastrophic recession. Thanks for putting me straight that this never happened and nobody was out of work prior to Labour fucking everything up. 🙂

Exactly. It's Thatcher's legacy.

Send him to AA, they might be able to help.

Don’t be ridiculous. Have you even read the post? You can’t send someone to AA. That’s now how it works. If all the government and NHS schemes don’t work, AA isn’t either.

There were jobs though, prior to the Labour Govt coming in. So why don't we just cut the benefits of anyone who was on benefits then and still is now?

What Is it you do?

To anyone longing for a Tory government, you have worryingly short memories. The myriad ways in which they have fucked up this country are too extensive to list. Plus, they used Covid to enrich themselves and their mates. Michelle Mone, Matt Hancock’s pub landlord and God knows how many others either became millionaires or added to the millions that they already had. Where’s the outrage about that gone?

The EU offered to delay Brexit because of the major upheavals caused by Covid. They gave the government an out. Did they take it? Of course not! Johnson used blamed the inevitable shitshow that arose from Brexit on Covid. They’re still claiming that they had no choice but to spend billions of pounds on PPE from abroad, through dubious suppliers… when we had British producers of PPE telling anyone that would listen that they had offered to provide PPE at cost but, after being continually blanked by the government, ended up selling it abroad. The tory government pocketed hundreds of millions, if not billions, through covid… gave out massive loans to non-existent companies… but, yeah, let’s on focus on the other end of the spectrum.

…and while I’m here… Has anyone found out who the hell Charlotte Owen is, yet? I only ask, coz Johnson gave her 29 year old arse a life peerage, which means that any time she rocks up to the House of Lords, she gets paid nigh on four hundred quid, just for turning up. There she can scoff subsidised Michelin star level food and drink at subsidised bars. Just wondering what qualified her for the peerage and how many others are in there for no apparent reason. But, yes, let’s focus on the benefit claimants. Nothing to see here…

👏👏👏

I’m old enough to remember the unemployment figures on the front of County Hall during Thatcher’s occupation of No 10. And the pit closures that put thousands of miners out of work. And the deindustrialisation of the major cities in the north.

Exactly. It's Thatcher's legacy.

Along with the current financial predicament of the UK, although I'll give her the benefit that thanks to WWII the UK was screwed anyway, she just accelerated the race to the bottom.

The data are clear - unemployment has soared under Labour due to their disastrous policies. You might be happy to turn a blind eye to millions suffering in the UK but I'm certainly not.

It hasn’t soared, it’s gone up a fraction of 1%.

People will just sell on their prepaid cards at a discount to get cash. Especially if they have an addiction.

Or steal.

Or buy counterfeit fags and make their own hooch which will land them in hospital.

Stupid idea.

Running battles outside my front door thanks to police being ordered by government to precipitate a "riot". Men who used to stand and drink together in the same pubs beating and stabbing each other with weapons. No wonder the boot denied the existence of "society" when she spent most of her life in politics actively destroying it.

UK youth unemployment rate for 16-to-24-year-olds sits between 15.8% and 16.4% as of mid-2026, representing an 11-year high not seen since 2014/2015.

I like the voucher idea. I believe it's been tried in the US.

It's a bit like some charities are now trying to give aid via physical food or vouchers : harder for it to be misused.

Which "under Labour" period are you referring to here specifically? I just want to be certain which pile of shite you are slavering about.

GrandTheftWalrus · Today 14:33

Exactly how would it be stopped from being used on alcohol or cigs? You go for a shop in a supermarket and chuck in a bottle of wine itll just come up as Asda etc. Or would it be banned in shops that sell booze in which case there are literally no shops here that they could use.

Obviously I mean where I live. All towns are different.

There is a family at the school where I work- we have to feed their kid breakfast because they say they do not have enough money. Both parents stand at the school gates puffing away. They do not work.

Shouldn't they be reported for neglect? Is there no way of doing that?

Which is exactly the age group the government has prioritised to tackle first. The overall unemployment rate has risen by about half a percentage. That’s not “soaring”.

So you think unpaid labour is positive? We punish people who commit minor crimes with community service so how does that fit with your theory? I absolutely despair sometimes.

Apparently, unpaid Labour is fine for the rest of us.

Let’s say that I am the typical, full time working Brit. On average, about third of the proceeds of my Labour are taken off me by HMRC. Approximately a third of that doesn’t go towards the common good but is redistributed.

So roughly, 11% of the days that I work are not for me or the common good. I work 220 days a year. So, it’s okay for me to work 24 days for nothing.

Bushmillsbabe · Today 14:35

We are the only country in Europe that taxes education.

Presumably you feel as strongly about the “separate issue” ie the shit deal that SEND children get in the UK, a growing category that now includes a cohort of children whose parents scraped together the fees for smaller classes, but can’t stretch to another 20%? Personally I’d prioritize fixing the “alternative” before hoofing any vulnerable DC towards it, but maybe sticking it to toffs is more important if you’re a bit of a tit. 🤷‍♀️

I think point the OP was making is that a government that enjoys agitating class war in their core voters can’t really complain when their non-voters reciprocate in kind.

And it seems the maths is on their side: half of all households take out more in services than they pay in tax, and a third of all adults pay no income tax at all. It’s easy to be profligate with someone else’s money - just ask any leftist.

Absolutely agree. No parent should need to pay for private to access a safe good quality education for their child. Every child has a right to feel safe and supported in school. But that isn't the reality, and until it is, parents should not be penalised for going private

Last week alone, my DD aged 10 (in a leafy village state primary) experienced the following

  • a chair was thrown at her
  • a child intentionally painted her t shirt
  • a boy made sexual comments towards her
  • a boy tore up her work and broke her ruler and threw it at her
  • a boy swore at her repeatedly during a class exam
  • a boy kept running out the classroom and tried to climb over a fence
  • a boy was found vaping in the year 6 toilets

This is not an unusual week in her school life. Luckily she is a very resilient young lady, hopefully heading for a girls grammar, but she still struggles with this some days. A couple of parents have moved their children into private, many more wish they could afford to do so.

The problem isn't the parents sending their children private, the issue is the fact they feel they have no other choice but to do so.

Glad you can see the funny side of £32 billion in tax payers money having to top up the wages of people who can't afford to house and keep themselves because their wages are so low in relation to the cost of living.
Its nothing to do with feeling entitled to a high wage, it's the simple necessity of being able to sustain oneself, which requires income of a certain level.

Absolutely. Some people are so busy kowtowing to the man that it doesn't seem to have occurred to them that the man is shafting most of us from here to kingdom come. It's absolutely absurd that many salaries in the UK are below what is needed to even cover the basics of existence, but instead of getting angry with those up top, too many seem to think punching downwards at the needy and vulnerable is a constructive way for society to function. What utter mugs.

Yes. The first point I made - thanks to their disastrous policies, the tax payer is now paying to fix the damage Labour has caused in their first two years. Let's hope the average middle is happy to continue being bled dry. 😂
