To be agreeing with new conservative benefits proposal re alcohol etc

Tigerthebreadroll · Today 07:26

They will cut benefits for people that haven't paid into the system and been unemployed for over 6 months (don't quote me on that number ) by 30 % and it will be given on a prepaid type card. Meaning it won't be accepted by betting shops, for alcohol or cigarettes. I feel that's right . Why should tax payers money be spent on funding cigarettes etc but I have no problem with funding the basics like food etc.
Thoughts?
Basically you will claim full benefits if you've worked and paid into the system. Should reduce generational unemployment hopefully

This is so sad. We have to provide fags and alcohol as people are too tramautised / exhausted / stressed to cope otherwise and if we stopped providing we’d have to deal with crime,

Why can’t we say let’s have proper mental health services and a proper police service to crack down on every single little bit of law breaking?

This IS satire right?! 🙏

Fortuity · Today 11:10

So if a parent cannot work because their child is severely disabled, their benefits get cut by 30%. Which means that their children can forget birthday and Christmas presents and indeed any little treats. Remind me why they have to be punished for their own or their siblings' disability?

TheLarch · Today 11:10

Yawn, this idea has been around since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It's all very well, but how on earth is it going to work in practice? Do you hand out paper vouchers, which are stigmatising and easily forged, or do you spend billions on dubious software and apps from a company such as Crapita or Serco that block payments with a bottle of vodka in them? Because every other attempt at a large scale software rollout they've ever attempted has been riven with bugs - see the NHS and local government for details. And it won't be cost-effective, just performative to punish some 'undeserving' poors.

It's basically a dog-whistle soundbite. Now, if the Tories promised to chase their mates in the big companies for the billions they owe in unpaid tax, or refused subsidies to people like Jim Ratcliffe who take take take from the public purse, then bugger off abroad so they pay no UK tax (while still sticking their oar in, I might add), then I might be all ears. But I've more chance of seeing a porcine flypast.

Then they shouldn’t be having children when they can’t pay their own way, this is literally a consideration you should make before deciding to have a child! Having a baby is a privilege and you should only ever have one or the amount you can afford to support YOURSELF. We literally considered what we would do if our baby was disabled or I became disabled or died having our child before deciding to go ahead and get pregnant it’s the responsible thing to do.

not everyone thinks about all the negative things that can happen and plan around it.

sometimes 19 year olds finish university and get pregnant with all the intention in the world of working and a relationship may break down or something traumatic happens and then their child gets a diagnosis and they are then a carer indefinitely.

everyone has different circumstances there isn't a one size fits all.

Unfortunately, at the moment we can’t have proper mental health services and or a proper police service because of the state of our public services and economy. I’ve got no interest in party political point scoring over whose fault that is or isn’t but the fact is, now is not the time for a costly, ill-thought through ideological experiment that would likely increase pressure on public services and cost the taxpayer more money.

CorporalJohn · Today 11:12

YABU. They will stop paying the tax on booze and cigarettes under that proposal. So the new "benefit" will be a 100% cost to the State instead of some of it being clawed back.

Yet another example of the Tories total inability to argue from cause to effect.

I live in a deprived area with poor job opportunities, I know a 19yo lad, council estate born and raised, dad a total nightmare, told my school not to apply to college as he wouldn't pass any of his exams, passed his exams well but then told too late to apply for college as the places were filled. He got a job at kwik fit - which he says is 'shit', used the money from this to get his driving licence and to fund training through a private company in a role he wants to go into, does a second job which dubiously uses false self employment to pay under minimum wage, but will be a gateway to the career he wants and give him the contacts he needs, and has just put an offer in on a wreck of a house.

Jobs exists, maybe not the one you want, and they require effort, drive and perserverance, even the shit ones, to get and hold on to.

From the ONS Sept 2026

1.78 million people are officially classified as unemployed (meaning they are out of work, available to start, and actively seeking employment).

There are 702,000 job vacancies are open across the UK economy.

The Unemployment-to-Vacancy Ratio
There are 2.5 unemployed people for every 1 available job vacancy

No amount of effort & drive can drum up jobs that aren't there - shit or otherwise.

Nice to see that classism is still alive and well in this day and age. Fucking shameful and embarrassing, the way the lot of you speak about other human beings.

The fact that everyone here really believes that all unemployed people are just sat around all day, smoking fags and drinking lambrini just goes to show how successful our governments have been in brainwashing us to hate one another, and the fearmongering and stigmatisation of benefits is really working.

Do you want to know how being unemployed really feels? Want to know what I spend my days doing? I can tell you.
I had worked my entire life since I was legally allowed, until I was made redundant in 2023 by a company that was outsourcing/moving my role abroad for cheaper labour. My partner works for a local authority who, again, despite his dedication to his role and the company, will not give him a full time job. He has worked there for 2 years.
Whilst I do currently have a job now, it's only 15 hours a week, and the company also plainly refuses to give me any additional hours either, despite my best efforts to get them. I have been job-searching for the entire time that I have been unemployed and I did not stop.

My partner and I are do not have children, so, before deductions, we would receive £666.97. Yes, you read that right. £666 for an entire month.

Being unemployed and on UC in this day and age is being unable to afford food shopping for the month.

Being unemployed is having to decide between being able to feed myself and my family, or pay our council tax bill for the month.

Being unemployed is job-searching tirelessly, day in and day out, sending thousands of job applications, only not to hear back from a single fucking one.

Being unemployed means constantly having to borrow money from family members.

Being unemployed is staring at the 4 walls of your home, not being able to go anywhere, do anything, because you have no money.

Being unemployed means that my dog hasn't had his mandatory annual vaccinations because I can't afford the added expense.

Being unemployed means rinsing your credit cards until they're maxed out, just to even try to make ends meet.

For me, being unemployed means being suicidal because I don't know any other way out of this.

Being unemployed means not knowing how we're going to afford the gas and electric for our house.

So unless you know how it feels, don't you fucking dare sit there and tell me that I'm living a life of luxury, because what I'm doing right now is not living, it's merely existing and making it through the month, until I have to do it all again.

Are there people that do abuse the system and don't use the money correctly? Yes.
Is it everyone? Absolutely fucking not. Not even close.

Agree with everything you've said here. And sorry to read about your experience. Hope things are better for you now.

What is also interesting is no one seems to consider the massive administrative costs that would be associated with trying to do something like Kemi is suggesting. It's stupid and let's be real the vast majority of people receiving benefits do not abuse system.

Cigarettes will be phased out anyway. Those born after 2009 won’t be able to buy them.

Threads like these are always a vehicle for punching down. If only people could see what is being done to us plus to argue that the poor have all the money is a bitter irony and frankly bonkers. I know someone who feels just like this. She’s a deeply unhappy woman and the bile she spouts is etched into every feature on her face making her very ugly.

How many smokers these days actually smoke legal taxed cigarettes ?

My belief is if you did that you would bankrupt yourself in short order if you had a 20 a day habit.

People may pick up the odd pack now and again from the shop. But it's mainly the 200 pack from the guy down the pub or bought abroad that is doing the heavy lifting.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · Today 11:20

Well instead of doing that I'd rather they actually stopped using AI and let actual people get jobs. The job market is awful at the moment. So let's ensure those on benefits have absolutely nothing to enjoy and punish them instead of sorting this country out so people can work.
I'm so sick of this attitude. I get carers allowance, is the government allowed to decide what I spend that on? My son will probably never be able to work due to severe SEN, does the government get to decide what he spends his money on?

There are fewer jobs than unemployed people at the moment.

You get made redundant, you can't find a job (because there aren't enough), the government (and half of MN) decide you are work shy, scrounging scum and treat you as such.

Maybe many of those actual hard working people will sink into deep depression and become unable to work and then be counted among the 'sick/disabled' and less vilified.

Therefore they will have previously worked, so will get benefits. As it’s meant to be.

God almighty. I thought Badenoch would have had more sense than this batshit idea.
Not that it will happen. She's really scraping the barrel here.

Not only is it small-minded, vicious and petty but surely as smoking and drinking are well known to shorten life the right approach would be to encourage their usage amongst the unemployed by those who regard them as pond life (not my view) unworthy of any treats or pleasures not discourage it!!

Typical knee jerk reaction from daily fail readers who can't even see that it won't even achieve their aims.

Are these expenses still happening? I thought since the expenses scandal 17 years ago and the convictions that followed these expenses had rightly been clamped down on. If someone is claiming for a duck house 17 years after an MP had to resign for doing so they’d have to be pretty bloody stupid!

While I think duck houses are out of the picture now, there are still some people taking the pee.

I think that is a very good point. None of us have perfect lives, everyone faces challenges, but it isn't generally the fault of benefit claimants/asylum seekers/ Muslims/whichever the scapegoat du jour is. Only bitter and small minded people will fall for such scapegoating.

Won’t work

Whomever people know who has cash or a card with no restrictions, so cash in hand, black market, child benefit, PIP, state pension, they will get to buy alcohol and cigarettes and then buy their food in return via the restricted cards.

Utter waste of admin time and money.
