AIBU to think we all have too many clothes?

I’ve come back from my holiday and done the laundry and vacuumed packed my summer clothes. I wouldn’t say I buy clothes that often but I’ve brought out my winter stuff and I am OVERWHELMED by the amount of things I own and I don’t even like most of it!!

Any advice on how to streamline this?

Listen to The Minimalist podcast!

Reduce your cupboard space. I have 3 shelves. They are 50 cm. High 30 cm. They hold all my everyday clothes - it works fine.

concertinacornflake · 19/09/2026 21:51

Sort everything into category long sleeved tops, short sleeved tops, skirts, trousers etc.

Count how many of each. Pick out the best half. Donate the other half.

If you're nervous, put them in a box for a year before donating.

Fidgety31 · 19/09/2026 21:52

I don’t wear anything in my wardrobes . I only wear things off the pile 😂

summater · 19/09/2026 21:52

I do but as an aside, I wouldn't be so hasty to pack the summer stuff away yet as forecast is 24 this week in the southern half of the country,.

Ah I’m in the north. Temperates look to be around 16, so not freezing but I probably won’t be wearing my shorts :)

I like the idea of the podcast!

Totally agree with you OP. I used to buy a lot of stuff because it wss reduced . And I have loads of things in my wardrobe I never wear and I don't like.
I really think buying less but buying quality clothes is the way to go but im still trying to adjust myself to this. I am being more careful these days about what I buy and scrutinise my decisions much more.

pippistrelle · 19/09/2026 21:56

If you don't like it, get rid of it.

I'm doing that with summer clothes at the moment - if I don't like it for whatever reason, or if I haven't worn it over the summer, I'm not just packing it up and putting it away for next year but packing it up and sending it to the charity shop. I'll do the same with autumn/winter clothes as I bring them into circulation.

I may not end up with much left at this rate seeing as I'm not liking so much of it, or some of it I like but it's uncomfortable or just doesn't look right on me for one reason or another. Or doesn't go with anything else.

It's quite liberating.

PetiteParakeet · 19/09/2026 22:03

Pack up everything you don’t like in bags. Or if it doesn’t fit, or you just don’t wear it. Take bags to the charity shop.

OceanAvenue · 19/09/2026 22:05

I’m a bit scared I’ll have nothing left 😄

I will go through my summer stuff in a couple of weeks after the mini warm spell, I'm also a bit concerned as the winter stuff is a lot bigger and heavier than summer stuff and I recently bought some new autumn stuff and popped into next sale today on my way to pick up a c&c somewhere else and a couple more things fell into my bag. My wardrobe rails will creak.

Mangoripples · 19/09/2026 22:10

Well, you have too many clothes 😉
I don’t though (not a good thing either).

EvilNextDoor · 19/09/2026 22:11

I’ve lost a lot of weight (thank you WLI) and have cleared a lot of my clothes out. I certainly didn’t like or wear nearly all of my old stuff, I wore the same 5 things off the pile..

I now have a one in one out policy and I am trying to build a ‘capsule’ wardrobe.

My aim is to have 10 core pieces and a few other bit and bobs.

The amount of clothes my teen has is on another level…we’ve been clearing out her room for decorating and even I am shocked at the amount of clothes she owns.

Hollowvoice · 19/09/2026 22:13

I definitely have too much in my wardrobe.
Now I'm in not working I've got rid of some stuff but there's still "nice things" I think I'll wear normally.
And I keep the "fancy" outfits just in case of random wedding etc
And of course all the things I love that I am absolutely definitely going to diet my way back into.....😓

JaceLancs · 19/09/2026 22:34

I have lots of clothes! However I am happy with that! I’ve yoyod weight wise most of my adult life so consequently have wardrobes in every size between 8 and 22
Just about to put my Summer clothes away and if next year they don’t fit I will sort out then
when I get out my autumn winter wardrobe - I will get rid of anything that’s bobbly, stained or is too big and see what’s left

SkyLark79 · 19/09/2026 22:59

Twice a year when I swap over seasons I do a ruthless cull. I pull absolutely everything out of the wardrobe & separate it into chuck or charity. That way, next summer when I swap it all back, it’s already been streamlined! If I haven’t worn it at all in that previous 6 months then it’s gone! X

morgan56 · 19/09/2026 23:03

Yes I have so many clothes, the stuff I do love, isn’t necessarily stuff I wear 🫣 it’s a problem.

OrangeFlower14 · 19/09/2026 23:06

Wrong title
I don’t have too many
Limited storage will put a stop to your problem very quickly

ItsAlwaysTwins · 19/09/2026 23:09

I buy clothes constantly but I can control it by regularly getting rid of things. I have a rule, if I haven’t worn it in two years, it goes to the bin or the charity shop.

LunaTheCat · 19/09/2026 23:10

for those saying limited ted wardrobe space helps - it doesn’t help me! 😆😆

OhHobnobs · 19/09/2026 23:13

I really don't understand how people "put away summer/winter warderobes".

My winter clothes are my summer clothes with a jumper 😆

Changeisstillpossible · 19/09/2026 23:18

@OhHobnobs yes, it can get so cold in the summer where I am. No way am I packing away jumpers!

QuickBrown · 19/09/2026 23:19

I was just thinking this. Vest tops become vests. Beach shorts become exercise shorts. Denim shorts don't get worn every winter but some years I stick a pair of thick tights under them. I suppose the tights don't get worn in the summer though.

Newmeagain · 19/09/2026 23:26

Yes. I was in fact just going through my clothes today. I don’t have huge amounts but still probably too many, given I don’t wear some of them. I am trying to buy less and better.
