AIBU to be worried about rising fuel and energy costs this winter?

on Monday went past Sainsbury and fuel was £1.61, went past Tesco tonight and its £1.70 - I'm guessing they've all put their prices up and there are 3 supermarkets within 1.5 miles

I'm leaving the car at home as much as possible, and certainly used less fuel than I normally would have by half way through the month

gas is going up on 1 October along with electric

things are going to be tight this winter

Fuel (non motorway obviously) is £1.75 around here now. We're cutting back on trips. Gas seems to have the biggest hikes so we're getting electric blankets and plug in oil heaters ready.

do you think plug in oil heaters will be cheaper than gas central heating?

It’s going to be a very tough winter for a lot of people. We are fixed till March with a very cheap tariff for our EV, which protects us over the winter thankfully from soaring heating and fuel prices, but not looking forward to what comes next.

Yep, because I'll have it right next to me and just do that room. House thermostat will be set to 12C to prevent any pipe freezing issues, but I don't want to use the main heating system.

Please let the government do something for people who need their cars for work. Maybe put pressure on businesses to increase their staff mileage expenses to the full 55pence

It's going to be a very expensive winter all round I think. Food as well is on the up as well as utilities and fuel. Then we have to worry about shortages as well with the govt telling everyone to stock up food and water etc.
I feel like hibernating this winter might be a good plan. Sleep for 6 months then wake up at the start of April.

At least if there are power cuts your bill will be cheaper (only half joking).

We have oil heating (no gas mains in the village and our fire place was taken out before we moved in)

We finally had enough money together to buy oil last week and it was near double the cost compared to the prices in August. We paid over £1 per litre, it was 60p when we last checked knowing we almost had the money together.

It will be used sparingly, we got 300 litres and it was a little over £300

Electric blankets are jumpers seem to be the theme for the winter. Running the car will be hard. Luckily we have the cupboards stocked and some veg still in the ground.

I was queuing to get onto Tesco car park today and noticed that their petrol is £1.71, yesterday it was £1.69.
However, I could see the Asda petrol station opposite it and their petrol today was £1.83. Yesterday it was £1.78. A 5p increase overnight.

When I fill my car I play a little game with myself - I try and guess how much it will cost based on where the dial was. I am pretty good at it!

This week I guessed £49 - it was £68!

This is going to be a problem as I live in the middle of nowhere and public transport is not an option for me.

Other than the very comfortably off isn't everyone worried about rising fuel and energy costs?

Because businesses can afford that? 99.9% of businesses in the UK are SMEs. Median profit for an SME is £13k per year.

Very unlikely, electricity is still around four times the cost of gas. Electric heating is very expensive unless its off peak.

Why not just turn down the radiators in the rooms you don't want to heat? Electricity is around four times the cost of gas per kWh and on peak electric heating is very expensive so you might find it's not a saving at all.

Yes I am very worried.
I just feel we face winter with incredibly hard circumstances again .
Failing NHS or failed ? When people are dying in corridors and dying of heat ? Fuel instability.
Spiraling costs and the worst of it is I don't feel the gov is on my side.

But how can a minimum wage employee afford to subside the company when prices are increasing so rapidly?

Now the Saudi Aramco deliveries have stopped, things will get a lot worse. Petrol will be £2 a litre by next month, diesel £2:30. I think the government should cut fuel duty for a few months. They are making millions extra off high fuel prices. They talk about windfall taxes on Oil and Gas companies, but they are doing exactly the same thing themselves, the extra fuel duty they are making now is a windfall. It should be given back to the people, we need it more than they do.

I advise against this. We did this one year and ended up with mould in the rooms that we didn't heat. Even if you put the hearing on just for an hour a day it will help.

Asking people to come into the office more should also be discouraged. The cost of transport for most people is more than extra energy costs at home.

Yanbu. My fixed price duel fuel is coming to an end and will go from 180 a month to £245 a month. I've never had such a leap before.

We’re planning to have heating on quite a bit lower than usual and for less hours than usual but still enough to keep the house dry and mould free.

God help those who are struggling to do even that. I hope there will at least be warm community places open during the day for them especially the elderly and those who are less mobile.

The trouble is that rising fuel costs affects everything - even if you don’t drive, and cut back on household heating.

Companies have to pay more, such as farmers and manufacturers/importers, so food, and everything else, goes up and up. 🤷‍♀️
