To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

I live in the south west. From October to March, our weather is 99% driving rain and howling wind. I’ve tried over the years to find a decent winter coat that keeps me warm and dry. I’ve found a few that work somewhat, including a lovely M&S rain jacket, but it’s a bit thin.

im considering just biting the bullet and buying a big waterproof changing coat from regatta and being cosy.

But does it look a bit wanky?! Is it okay?!

YABU - accept the soggy legs and wear something more dignified

YANBU - stay warm and dry

needs to be camo with pink lining for maximum B.E. points

I also have a Janelle (as do several of my friends). It is fabulous at keeping me dry as it’s really long and had a great hood. It needs some extra layers on a cold day, but I prefer that as otherwise it wouldnt get worn as much as I can’t tolerate a big heavy cost unless it’s completely Baltic outside.

I think you should get one! Don’t care what people think. When I see them I think about how nice it would be to wrap it round and be snuggly. If you want one, get one. Come back and show us.

They are wanky but luckily I'm of an age where I literally couldn't care less about what others think. My Dry Robe is the only coat I've ever had that is truly waterproof and warm, and I'd spent thousands over the years trying to find a good coat until i gave in and tried a Dry robe.

I bought one last year exactly for this reason, I bought my normal size (large) and it drowned me, sent it back and bought a small and it is exacty what I wanted. Go for it, just buy asmaller size.

My husband has the most amazing north face coat. Really warm and waterproof. It was so good he didn’t have to wear the provided kit when we went to Lapland. I’ve got my eye on one from there next time I replace a coat as I was really impressed by how well his one kept him warm and dry in pretty extreme temps.

I’m in wales and have the mountain warehouse version. I couldn’t give a shit what I look like. I wear it to walk the dog and watch the children’s football matches. I am warm and dry in it and that’s all I care about!

I tried one on. I'm 5ft tall and size 16/18. My god I looked ridiculous even now I keep laughing at how I looked.
I'm still looking to find a good coat.

You said that it's for commuting. How are you commuting? They are so big and bulky that you'd probably take up 1 and a half seats on a bus.

I bought an absolutely hideous thing last year, basically it looks like a big black sleeping bag with a hood but thankfully not quilted, it comes down to my calves and keeps me warm and dry.
Those were my two requirements, who cares about fashion when it is pissing down with rain, gale force winds and freezing cold??
A bonus is that I could suddenly double in size and it would still fit 🤣🤣

To be honest, just give in to the fact they’re quite ugly and people are snobby about them. They’re great coats. I have a regatta one and I bought it solely for use after swimming… I rapidly began using it all the time last winter when it seemed to never stop raining. It’s warm, easy to chuck on with whatever you have on, long, waterproof and not too expensive. I’ve also been so grateful of the fact it’s oversized when I’ve needed to wrap a small child in there with me who is cold, also when the same small child wet herself on me meaning I needed to change my piss drenched trousers and knickers in a busy car park, and its also come in handy for spreading out on damp grass for us to sit on!!

I dont understand why they attract such derision/sneering? More so than other items of clothing? Loads of practical things are not outrageously stylish, but don't get nearly as much grief!

I have the passenger changing robe - it isn't waterproof but water repellant so is ok in light showers. I got it because it is less bulky than the dry robes but still v cosy. I love it. It's my cold weather coat for dog walking and also great all year for the beach/loch after swimming etc.

DH has a dry robe and it is just that it better because it is waterproof but it is bulkier.

I don't care what anyone thinks if I am out in mine - i am warm and cannot see anyone past the big hood.

Lands End Squall coat is quite popular on the touch line. It's not stylish, but not unsightly and does the job.

I wear my dry robe as a winter coat. I am sure I do look like a sack of spuds but I look like a sack of warm and dry spuds. I can stuff loads of jumpers under it too. I also have over shoe crampon things that I wear in bad ice and plenty of other unfashionable and downright ugly clothing that allows me to be comfortable.

I have a lovely warm and, more importantly long, waterproof from Seasalt. Has a hood, cosy pockets and reaches well past my knees. Thoroughly recommend.

I have a Seasalt Janelle after seeing it recommended on here so many times. However, whilst it keeps you dry for a bit I find it doesn't really cut it on a 30 minute dog walk in the pouring rain. The sleeves are the first thing to go. I'm considering also buying a dry robe for those very wet walks.

There is a facebook group that started many years ago where (mostly) men are free to voice their misogyny under the guise of dry robe hatred. It's all very strange and quite pathetic. Men would take photos of women wearing dry robes and berate them in this group.

“Fallen for” what? They are practical, warm and dry? I am forever baffled by the drone hate on here. Other than “they look ugly”, what’s everyone’s problem with them? I guarantee I’d think half the raincoats people suggest on here are ugly and old fashioned but I wouldn’t care if I saw some one wearing them.

i say this as someone who’s doesn’t own a dry robe and has no intention of buying one but…I don’t get it!!

I've got a few because, shock, I need them for swimming through the winter. I swim in a lake and an outdoor unheated pool so have a clean dry one to put on after getting changed and one to put on straight out of the water that gets damp whilst I get changed.

I once came out of the water when it was snowing, got changed, put on a dry robe and popped to Tesco's on the way home. Someone muttered 'DryRobe wanker' to their mate as I walked by, It wasn't my finest moment but I did turn round and tell them I'd just got out the water, which was exactly what they're designed for so he could jog on.

They're not that great as everyday coats either to be fair - I wear multiple layers under mine, plus a hot water bottle/scarf/gloves and look like the bird feeder lady from Home Alone, they're big bulky things, and breezy by design (you're meant to get changed under them!) not sure why people think they look good in them! Do I love seeing them on the high street far far away from any body of water?! Nope, but it doesn't make me ansty, just a bit eye roll-y.

My 10-year-old has two Regatta Orla Kiely robes, she wears one for school in the winter as we live in the hills of Yorkshire so a similar climate. She/we regularly get stopped in the street by women asking where they are from. The hood seems perfectly adequate to me. I have a Red Equipment robe for outdoor swimming and the beach and I’d say it is far superior in its quality and far cosier and warmer. Too many women’s waterproof jackets are too short or garish in their pink and purple combos. My goth teen has a waterproof poncho from Rain Kiss that folds into a pouch and looks like one is wearing a tent but when you are dealing with the type of rain you and I experience all winter, who cares?!

Best coat about for cold people who live in conditions where it is wet with horizontal rain 80% of the time all year round.

Yes to the alcohol pocket! (Also useful for large water bottle and a packed lunch)

Hood on the orginal dryrobe does stay up if that is an important factor.

I do usually give a shit about fashion - but weather conditions mean I will 100% hide the outfit under my wanker costume

I bought one of these last year as we got a puppy. I don't care what I look like or what others think of me as long as I am dry and warm. This coat fulfilled both of those needs.

Yes you get soggy legs in horizontal rain, but you would get that in any type of coat. For dog walking I simply added in waterproof trousers. Feel like a bit of a t*t but needs must
