To buy a dry robe as a winter coat?!

I live in the south west. From October to March, our weather is 99% driving rain and howling wind. I’ve tried over the years to find a decent winter coat that keeps me warm and dry. I’ve found a few that work somewhat, including a lovely M&S rain jacket, but it’s a bit thin.

im considering just biting the bullet and buying a big waterproof changing coat from regatta and being cosy.

But does it look a bit wanky?! Is it okay?!

YABU - accept the soggy legs and wear something more dignified

Oh I’m aware they’re ugly, I’m not too bothered by that as I would only really be wearing it on my commute. I just can’t find a decent winter coat that is long, warm, dry and doesn’t cost £300

I have a mountain warehouse one. It's brilliant for parkrun marshalling and walking to the gym in rain.

I like that I don't have to add extra layers, the hood keeps me dry, the length keeps me dry to my knees and it has big pockets.

They are very warm too. I'm a big urban walker and it's nice to be cosy and not need an umbrella.

If a dry robe is off the charts where can I find a good coat?! It needs a hood!

This is all I really want. I’m kind of willing to accept looking like a tit if I am warm and dry

I just couldn’t get on board with the dry robe, I’ve got a Sea Salt Janelle which while still quite MN mum-esque at least nips in the waist so I feel less like a sack of potatoes while being warm and dry.

Yes they are wanky and look awful. But you will be in good company as so many have fallen for them! Don’t worry what others think!

The Regatta one has an awful hood. Don’t bother.

I have a Seasalt Janelle which is fairly long, waterproof and warm without being too heavy. It's not particularly stylish but I'm at the point in my life where I will take warm and dry over looking cool!

You don’t need anyone’s permission, buy whatever you want.

Lots of women where i live wear them in autumn/wint I live on a school route so I see a lot of dry robes ,

I'm in Scotland and it can be rainy here too, they honestly just look like practical coats not everything has to be "stylish" especially when you are walking about in the pissin rain

As for the coat, I think it looks absolutely fine and very warm, I'd buy it!

Regatta Romine or Freyla. Both warm, long and good in the rain. Less than £50 on Amazon in a number of colours. I have had both.

Unfortunately it is £300 but my Rainsisters coat has been going strong for six years, looks like new despite daily wear October-April. I’ve never had such a complimented item of clothing, genuinely get stopped in the street, even in London! It’s very warm and cosy.

Personally I think they look awful. But you do you.

There is no such thing as a genuinely warm, waterproof, full length coat with a hood that looks good. There just isn't. But a genuinely warm, waterproof full length coat with a hood is an incredibly useful thing. So just buy it, accept it won't look great but enjoy it for what it is - and have another coat that looks nicer but is less practical for the (probably quite few) occasions where you really would rather look stylish than be warm and dry.

I’m truly not a fan of them myself but each to their own.
Sweaty Betty (even on vinted) are excellent. Friend has a Craghopper one and it seems to be great too. Regatta themselves could be worth a look.

I used to think they looked terrible when there were only the original Dryrobe ones. But some of the knock offs are a lot more coat like. They probably wouldn’t be as effective as the Dryrobe for its intended purpose, but they look a bit more serviceable for everyday use. I have been tempted myself as I’m in NI and the weather is utterly shit. I could probably get away with it in summer🤣

I’m also in the south west and I routinely wear a dry robe as my winter coat, I see other people doing the same.

Keeps me warm and dry, washes in the machine, dries quickly, and only one layer to take off when I go into a cafe.

Obviously there are more stylish options but I don’t care!

I have one for watching Sunday league football, dog walks in the freezing cold, and, yes, occasionally cold water swimming. It’s light, warm and waterproof. I got it during Covid and the pockets are large enough for a couple of cold beers to meet friends in the great outdoors. And while some people say they’re ugly, that’s an opinion, and I probably wouldn’t like what they wear particularly 🤷‍♀️ I honestly don’t think you’ll regret it. Dryrobe wanker and proud f🙌

If you know you would wear it, if it suits your needs then buy it. I have been watching for the perfect dog walking warm winter coat for years.

the perfect winter coat is the holy grail! Who cares what a few people think, most people won’t notice or have an opinion😊.

Obviously you can wear what you want but there’s a whole world of coats out there that are waterproof and designed to keep you warm. I have such a coat from Craghoppers for walking the dog. It’s not a case of a Dry robe or flimsy M&S coat. ( I also have a Dry robe and it’s noisy )

I have DKNY coat I picked up at Costco about 4 years ago and it is warm and cosy and completely rain-proof. Having said that, I think dryrobe is a good shout and you will be in good company as it is pretty much SW winter uniform. At least around coastal areas. Would I wear it on a theatre trip to Bristol or Cheltenham? Probably not. But for daily use, I have zero reservations.
