To find YouTube unwatchable now?

I mainly watch YouTube while eating lunch, so usually 10-30 min videos. I’ve just sat through 11 adverts in a 20-minute video and felt so annoyed by the end. The person kept being cut off in the middle of sentences or when they were just about to show something, all so I could watch the same bloody adverts on repeat! Now there’s also a little ad box on the screen which cuts off any text in the corner.

The other evening I sat down to watch a nice relaxing musical on YouTube. Same thing with adverts literally every 5 minutes, some you have to skip or they’ll keep playing forever. By the end of the 90 minutes I felt how a toddler must feel when you turn off their favourite show! It’s surprisingly infuriating!

I know it’s to try to make me pay £10+ a month to remove the ads, but the tactic is so annoying I don’t want to reward them by giving them my money. Especially when I’m only watching for 20 mins a day (but half of that is stupid ads for handbags). I wouldn’t mind sitting through extra ads at the beginning or end if I was allowed to watch the actual video!

Just wanted to rant and wondering if it’s actually only me that’s getting annoyed

Use the duckduckgo browser, it blocks YouTube adverts

daisyydaisyy · 11/09/2026 14:55

This is why I pay from premium lite. I can’t deal with adverts at all and I watch YouTube every day so the £7.99 a month is worth it for me.

iPreferBooks · 11/09/2026 15:09

Brave browser, 100%

lovelifeat40 · 11/09/2026 15:11

I use an ad blocker, works pretty well

WashinIsNeverDone · 11/09/2026 15:15

I pay for the premium as I get YouTube music. The videos and the playables ad free worth it for me and mine

purplecorkheart · 11/09/2026 15:18

I am another person who pays premium. I don't watch tv but use youtube a lot.

Shesafancyflapjack · 11/09/2026 15:58

Another one suggesting Brave browser, it blocks all in site ads including mumsnet, which were frankly becoming bizarre.

HardStopAt4 · 11/09/2026 16:00

Firefox browser + adblocker (I use Ublock Origin) works a treat.

This is what I pay, it is good value, Music and political podcasts, history and DH gets hours of engineering.

BigMartin · 11/09/2026 16:04

I’ve paid for premium for a few years. YouTube is my main form of entertainment so it is worth it for me, especially as I listen to videos to go to sleep.

Neuronimo · 11/09/2026 16:06

Yes I've been trying to do a meditation and I think it's a Tui advert keeps blaring every five minutes.

SusanOldknow · 11/09/2026 16:13

I've been similarly annoyed - but I've been using the YT app. So sounds like the way to solve it would be to stop using the app, and instead use one of the browsers mentioned above ! Good news.

Sartre · 11/09/2026 16:14

It’s worse when you’re trying to do a workout on there and the ads cut in when you’re midway through a timed exercise!

Edited

I use DuckDuckGo for MN as it blocks the ads but even that is now offering a paid for service.
Think I’ll try Bravo.

But yes, YouTube is unwatchable

Makemydaypunk · 11/09/2026 16:22

I pay for premium, I use YouTube more than any other channel or streaming service so it’s worth every penny to me.

Makemydaypunk · 11/09/2026 16:23

There is a free trial but I warn you, you will never be able to go back!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 11/09/2026 16:24

iPreferBooks · 11/09/2026 15:09

This, not seen a youtube ad in years

Echobelly · 11/09/2026 16:24

I went to premium as I already had YouTube music and it was only £1 or £2 more on top of that - plus I like to fall asleep to relaxation videos and, although they only tend to have ads and the start and finish I really didn't to worry about dropping off or an ad blaring in. Hate to say it, but really been worth it,

BunnyLake · 11/09/2026 16:37

No matter how annoying they are (and they are very annoying) I refuse to pay for no ads. It seems pointless anyway as so many YouTubers insert their own sponsored ads into their channel anyway. I watch on a tv so am stuck with them. Netflix ads are very unobtrusive and short, I hope it doesn’t go the same way as YT.

Same. I wouldn't go back now. It would drive me up a wall.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/09/2026 16:43

I don't really notice the ads much on YouTube, maybe I just tune them out, I'm usually sitting with my laptop and noodling about on Mumsnet at the same time. But I do agree with pp, it's really annoying when you're doing an exercise class and there are ads in it!

My main gripe against YouTube at the moment is the amount of AI generated content or channels which use AI voiceovers.I'll start watching something and then the audio commentary will contain such an egregiously mispronounced word that I realise it's AI and I have to turn it off.

Seziah · 11/09/2026 17:14

Ah I’ve been using the app. Like others, I’ve also been annoyed by ads in workouts and meditations! I will have to give Brave a go, I have an ad blocker on Chrome but sites like MN tell me I need to turn it off so I thought that would happen with all ad blockers

One lady I follow for workouts never puts ads in the middle of videos and is very good at taking them out if they appear. But there’s a new thing now where the video will get smaller and an ad will appear in the sidebar, so I have to stop and make the video bigger again so I can see the timer. Might have to ditch the YouTube app before it finds even newer ways to annoy me

What do you and everyone else watch on You Tube?

I only ever watch music videos.
