AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

No one I know has ever once mentioned stockpiling. Where are people getting this information from?

This little known organisation known as The British Government.

Honestly, I give up! 😂 Can't you even read the thread? This question HAS BEEN ANSWERED MANY TIMES, WITH GOVERNMENT LINKS.

The Times reports that the suspected bomb attack on RAF Fairford was foiled by one of the suspects who called 999 himself

This story gets weirder by the day.

Just caught up with this, totally bizarre. I give up trying to understand what was going on!

IAmInTheHouseSidney · 30/09/2026 07:31

Radioactive tsunami sounds like a good title for an apocalyptic movie.

1000000% would watch, please spmeone suggest it to The Asylum

Today's mental story of the day is the Fly Dubai Dubai to Tel Aviv flight this morning.

The flight put out a hijack code, then went silent with the transponder going off briefly, triggering it Israeli jets to be scrambled and to be eventually diverted to a Saudi Arabian military base. It plunged 14000ft in a minute at one point before stabilising and landing safely.

The reports then came out that it wasn't a hijacking but the co-pilot had a mental health episode and stabbed the pilot and tried to gain control of the plane in an apparent suicide attempt to crash the plane with everyone on board.

The rest of the crew and passengers then stormed the cockpit and helped apprehended this co-pilot. Apparently the plane was landed safely with the aid of passengers onboard who were pilots themselves who just happened to be onboard.

This is where it gets even stickier...

It was initially reported that the pilots were a Ukrainian national and a Russian national. This has since been verified by Israel as false and that the pilot who tried to bring the plane down is of Omani descent. And it is currently being treated as a terrorist incident subject to further investigation. There's footage circulating of passengers with blood stains on their clothing.

It's also notable that Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have formal diplomatic relations but the flight was allowed to land in Saudi Arabia as the Israelis closed the airports temporarily in response to the incident. The plane was mainly carrying Israeli passengers.

This one is liable to blow up into all sorts of conspiracy theories and it's not exactly going to help with ongoing tensions around the world.

God knows what really happened. Once again it's such a bizarre story.

Strewth!

Scuttles off to fill another old milk bottle with water and stash it in garage, shaking head and muttering incomprehensibly... 😂

I am not convinced the physics works for a warhead large enough to disable the UK with a radioactive ‘tsunami’…

An EMP airburst would conceivably knock out a lot of the grid, I would imagine, but that’s it.

I understand that, it's not the method, it was there are simulations out there. I mean do we do simulations like that?

Definitely would make a mint film!

You'd probably love the movie 'The Wave' (2015) - Norwegian with subtitles but it's great (even has a sequel!). Classic theme - scientist discovers evidence that there'll be a collapse of a local mountain into the fjord and a devastating wave would be produced. Of course he's not believed, then it happens.

YouTube trailer

It's based on a collapse that actually happened in the past so that makes it all the more scary.

Rumours that a gas facility in UAE and an oil facility in Saudi have been hit today. So far unconfirmed but it doesn't sound promising.

Those are the films that stay with you. When they skim the truth. I'll have a look.

I don't know what's worse really, that they physically test them or refine them so the fallout doesn't last as long.

Well Pete Hegseth isn't sitting on his hands, have been listening to his State of the Force address. Here are some of the highlights.

Secretary Pete Hegseth announces that Elon Musk will co-lead a new War Department effort studying the future of warfare during his State of the Force address. Hegseth unveils Project Meridian, naming Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich to co-lead the effort under the department's Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael.

https://x.com/FoxNews/status/2105382951173423361

SecWar Pete Hegseth just launched "FORTRESS AMERICA" which will FORCE every single military installation in the US to produce its own electricity, independently from the grid — keeping us more immune from infrastructure attacks It will also SURGE stockpiles and ensure critical minerals, propellants and more for national security will NEVER be cut off in time of war: A full-blown "insurance policy" for the entire nation.

https://x.com/EricLDaugh/status/2105381863585984852

Seems like all this is going to cost quite a lot of money! Here's a summary of all the other things Hegseth announced.

My DH is a proper prepper. No one knows about his stash but me. And you lot now lol.

He got ill with cancer a few years ago and was spending way too much down YouTube rabbit holes. So now I have a loft full of supplies that he regularly rotates out. Litres and litres of bottled water, water purifying tablets, barrels of vitamins, several water butts. Camping stove with additional 15 gas bottles. Lights, headlamps, gloves, socks, candles etc. about 6 months food at least! Plus basic bagged ingredients like flour, sugar, powdered milk, yeast, oats, rice, pasta etc.

we had a significant power cut recently and it was like his wet dream! Out came the stove and lights.

His present shopping list includes small fridge and freezer, small generator, small solar power thingy and a small faraday cage.

I think partly it’s because his cancer is terminal, he worries about me
and the kids if something bad happens. I used to get irritated. Now I just let it flow over me.
