AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

Well that was the scariest thing I have seen since 'Threads'.

Since we keep hearing about cyberattacks and powercuts it's not completely impossible that this could happen.

Total horror and worse very de ja vu compared to the covid fighting over toilet rolls and lots of protests we have seen in the UK recently.

The movie shows Britain over I think about 4 days without power. Hospital chaos, fuel chaos, food looting, violence, break-ins to your house to steal your supplies, water off as it does not work when power is out it seems.

Sorry I hope I haven't diverted the thread but this was really scary to watch. Since 9/11 and covid and all the recent goings on it does not seem impossible at all.

Don't watch it if you are anxious!

Very realistic and very scary!

My powerbank and battery kettle are now on charge!!!

There is a US version of this too.

Hi this is the radio I ordered.ROCAM FM/AM Wind up Radio Solar, Emergency Survival Radio with 12000mAh Rechargeable Battery, Torch, Reading Light, Type C & USB Charging & SOS for Power Outages & Outdoor Camping: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I am no expert but I needed an A port for an old iphone which is still working to recharge.
It has 3 C ports which will be for my more modern samsung phone, my laptop and my kindle hopefully.

Had to learn about usb a and usb c ports in last few days as I admit I was ignorant.

My iphone is lighting port at one end and a at the other. It's an iphone 7.

Anyway this radio works on batteries so I bought a supply of them. It is also supposed to be solar and wind up too. It also has a charging port so that is useful.

I figured if so many people had bought it, it was good enough for me although I did spend a bit of time trying to understand the above too.

Good luck

P.S.Did I say 5000 of them had been bought in last month. Looking today it says 500 so either my eye sight is going or the number has changed as we are now a week later. That's just the yellow ones mind.

okay not going mad. Knew I saw the 5000 plus sold in last month. It wasn't the radio I bought - it was the powerbank that had sold over 5000. Plus as you can see from my post I am getting mixed up between the radio I bought and the powerbank.
Brain cells are clearly dying off with all the stress. Sorry!

There is a US version of this too.

Not nearly as scary, though! Threads is next level. I watched most of it again a few days ago and the first half is especially interesting as they focus on Iran, Russia and the US in the news reports people hear. Honestly if a nuclear attack happens really even if you had supplies the chances are they'd be blown to smithereens, unless you are in a bunker with them and then you'd need probably 2 plus years in order to 'survive' but then you'd come out to famine and... well, need I go on. I don't prep for nuclear war, there's no point, but for cyber attacks then yes, bring it on, I want to have about 1 months' worth of food, am still a way off that.

I think I might have started watching that one first before I realised I was on the wrong movie. It had Peter Benton out of ER in it (can't remember the actors name).

Oh well if I need depressed tomorrow I might watch the USA one in between putting my many, many tins away.

There is new technology though. Russia has a new weapon to cut off the undersea cables without leaving any trace. Weapons don’t have to be bombs.

But they clearly didn't have the technology to blast us off. If they did, Ukraine would be no more.

I don't even think this.

It's hybrid warfare. That's guerilla type tactics and strategic targeting to produce splits within the public of a country (think opposition for the Vietnam war within America being a key factor in the US withdrawal).

Donald Tusk has done a long speech about what he expects.

This is lifted from the Guardian:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2026/sep/17/donald-trump-eu-european-union-mark-carney-canada-associate-membership-tariffs-threats-germany-merz-latest-news-updates

Intelligence shows Russian 'plans for hybrid strikes ... against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland,' Tusk says
Tusk says that intelligence assessments show “plans for hybrid strikes using drones and missiles against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland”.

He says the latest intelligence on this is “very consistent and convincing”.

He says that Russia is expected to pretend that any incidents are “accidental” in a bid to “paralyse or at least weaken Nato’s resolve to invoke the relevant provisions” of the Nato treaty.

“There is a real risk that drones or other types of projectiles could be launched into the territory of one or more Nato countries on the eastern flank, and could even cause damage, and the official narrative will be that this is an accident and that there is no reason for anyone to consider any response from Nato.

The aim … will be to weaken Nato’s integrity in general and, above all, to convince … member states that Article 5 is more theoretical than practical – that is, the assumption that no one will want to die for Latvia or Lithuania, given that we are dealing with incidents rather than a declaration of war.”

He says he expects Russia to use “recurrent” incidents to use them as “an increasingly stark illustration of Nato’s helplessness” to respond in a united manner.

And

Tusk's stark warning about Russian plans for hybrid strikes against Ukraine's allies - summary
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk has said that intelligence assessments show Russian “plans for hybrid strikes using drones and missiles against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland” in the coming months (17:23).

In a sombre speech in the Polish parliament, Tusk warned that Poland will face ‘provocations ... far more dangerous that those we have faced so far’ (17:33) as Russia is expected to test Nato’s resolve in defending the territory of its members on the eastern flank.

The Polish prime minister cautioned that the coming autumn and winter is likely to be “the most critical moment” in Russia’s full-scale aggression on Ukraine (17:20).

Tusk said the available intelligence suggested Russia will pretend any incidents are “accidental” to further stress test Nato’s article 5.

Tusk also warned that some European parties “currently gaining in strength” are only “looking for an excuse” to not defend Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, calling for a united response to any threat in the region (17:28).

AND

Tusk did not specifically reveal which intelligence agencies he was citing.

However, Poland’s security services minister Tomasz Siemoniak met CIA director John Ratcliffe last week, just days after his much-discussed trip to Russia.

Poland’s defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is also planning to go to the US next week for urgent talks with US defence secretary Pete Hegseth.

Make of that what you will.

Tusk and other key ministers also repeatedly quoted Polish intelligence agencies in the past, whether in response to repeated security incidents, airspace provocations near Poland, or arrests of people suspected of planning acts of sabotage on behalf of Russian intelligence services.

AND

Some politicians 'just looking for excuses' to not defend Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Tusk warns
Tusk also talks about Poland’s absolute resolve to defence all other Nato countries.

He says “this is very important, because as. a border country … we are likely to need allied loyalty under Article 5 more than Portugal or Ireland.”

He continues:

“It is not the case that all politicians in the west, in the United States or in Europe, are thinking about how to defend Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and that they are all eager to prove immediately that they are staunch allies and will come to our aid under Article 5.

Far from all of them. There are many politicians, as well as political forces, which are currently gaining in strength and influence in European countries, who are just looking for an excuse: we won’t die for Poland; we won’t die for Latvia or Lithuania.”

He says that’s why Poland must be very openly ready to follow through on its allied commitments.

“Article 5, loyalty within the alliance, and faithfulness to our commitments must become our hallmark,” he says.

AND

In a strong speech, he continued:
“I am from Gdańsk. In May 1939, a certain French politician – a future Nazi collaborator – asked in the French press why anyone should die for Gdańsk. A few months later, the whole of Europe was dying.
To those who say today that this is not our war, I would like to remind them of this lesson from history. In 1939, our alliances existed only on paper, really. We were left on our own. Today, we are members of Nato and the European Union.”
We spend almost 5% of our GDP on defence. This is almost twice as much as Germany and twice as much as France. We are building one of the strongest armies in Europe; we secured €44bn from the EU’s SAFE programme, the most from all EU countries. And Polish borders are today the best marked borders on the entire continent.
Europe, which in 1939 did not want to die for Gdańsk, today funds Polish armaments.
But we are aware that even the largest army is not enough if the nation is not ready.
Therefore, I address all those who look at the future with anxiety:
We are not seeking war, but if anyone dares to attack us, they will face a resolute response from us and our allies. Long live a free and secure Republic of Poland.”

Just to add Germany has closed its Consulate in St Petersburg today (the Embassy in Moscow is still open). And has already accused Russia of attempted sabotage attacks that were unsuccessful as well as there being a mysterious sabotage of the Dutch Railway system yesterday (no one implied on that but would be consistent with what's happened and what's been said.

Obviously France is having it's big internal meeting tomorrow which I'm guessing will include some of this.

Meanwhile BBC and UK Government: Total Crickets.

(And this is why I have posted in full due to this being buried on the Guardian and hidden away on twitter).

Yeah, what Tusk says doesn't hold that much water in my books, he's got an agenda.
Long story short, I'm a Polish citizen and although I haven't even visited there in about 2 decades, he's been on the scene even back in my day.
The 'accidental' attacks on Poland already happened a few times.

What I'm saying is that: we were led to believe that the next great war will be nuclear. At a push of the big red button we will all go puff.
Russian is supposed to be in possession of such technology since the Cold War. They are not using it in Ukraine. What they are using instead is weapons dating back to good ol' USSR days.
So they either don't have the technology or they, for whatever reason, are not using it in Ukraine.

In the context of this conversation: I don't use to 'prep' because I was thinking there was no point and we will be just all blasted off in seconds. Now I'm not so sure, so I prep a tiny bit.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 18/09/2026 19:05

I like Donald Tusk enormously. He was a very helpful commentator and a cool head all the way through the long and distressing years of Brexit.
I've always had the impression he's been pretty good for Poland, and reasonably popular there too?
Everyone has an agenda. And many politicians have an easier time of it on the world stage than they do at home. For obvious reasons.
What is it you think his agenda is, @VeronicaRaven ?

Could it be though that they want to reclaim Ukraine and so don't want it to be unusable with radiation? Thus no nuclear attacks.

I can't imagine they would have much use for our tiny Island so bombs away...... (I mean hopefully not but you know what I mean)

Are any of the solar panels on the radios any good? Is anyone using them now?

It's one thing to have them ready but another trying them.out before needed

I don't think people are thinking things through.

Does this mean the rest of Europe is getting ready to go to war? Or am I reading this wrong. Where is our bleedin PM? I mean I know he lost his dad for which I am sorry but is this stuff not kind of important? All I've seen from him is him posing in a fancy car, running a marathon and talking about net zero.

It's been happening since Sweden joined NATO in 2024, it just isn't widely publicised.

@ASpoonfullOfPuppies Europe is in training for conflict. The Tories hollowed out our military. No-one cared how they were running our country into the ground, as long as poor people had a punitive benefit system. We can't magic up what might be needed and no WC family will give up their sons so readily, as they have done in the past, because they know the Britian being built isn't for them. I should imagine a lot of young men across Europe feel the same. We aren't Russia first target.

I was so proud of Denmark and Greenland for holding out and standing up to Trump. I really, really don't like this. What on earth has happened or been said to make this happen? Why are they giving him anything at all? Have they evaluated this as being actually wise in the overall picture of defence? Is this good for Europe? In what way? Why did it drop off the news until now? A few weeks ago - no, no, no! Now suddenly - oh go on then, we're signing a thing.

Trump and Putin are a pair of fucking snakes who'd stitch the whole world up between them if they could and stab everyone in the back including each other. Which is basically an approach to bringing on Armageddon.

Security.

Denmark can't defend Greenland. It's that simple.

Something has changed in calculations this week.

The readouts by Tusk, Macron and a number of other EU leaders all say the same thing.

If the alternative is losing Greenland to Russia, then Denmark has made a choice to return some control for strategic military support.

I say 'choice' in inverted commas.

It strikes me as being a least worse option decision.
