AIBU to contact a factory about alcoholic drink cans in the hedge?

I belong to a litter picking group. There is a hedge in front of a factory that is full of alcoholic drink cans, The cans could only come from the staff working in the factory on their breaks. There are no other sources of where these cans could have come from.

Certainly employers don't accept drinking whilst on shift etc. Also the shifts are not suitable for PT.

Should I contact them?

You have access to the hedge and I assume you don't work there?
Could be from anyone. Could also be from employees after a shift.
You can advise them it is a high litter area. Request they provide a bin maybe?

Do you really think that staff are on the piss while they're working and throwing the cans in the hedge? That seems... unlikely; surely there's CCTV on the grounds.

I'd drop the factory a quick e-mail. Even if it's not their fault, a good company would or should send someone out to clean up their 'bit' of the local area. I think McDonalds used to do this, although I'm not sure if they still do or not.

The worst offenders near me are the local school kids and the 'drop off' parents. The school hedges near 'drop off' are full of decorative drink cans, old vapes, etc. And that's despite the signs, made by children, asking them not to.

P.S. I have a food packaging factory near me (think pre-packed sandwiches for a premium supermarket), works 24/7, and there's a strong whiff of cannabis from the staff smoking hut which is outside the factory, next to the pavement.

Who needs to drink if they’re working in a pie factory? They’re already living the dream

Well there is only that factory around. It’s hard to describe. There is a road which only has a factory on one side . Rest of the units are either vacant or blocks of offices. They are small with probably max 20 staff per block. The offices are grouped together in a rectangular shape with parking spaces and picnic tables.

Is there anyway people from outside/the area could be meeting there for chit chat evenings/nights and booze while at it?

I did some agency work at ginsters factory, the amount of drinking and drug taking going on was shocking.

Huh? Why wouldn’t it be teens there in the evening? Why would you think staff are pissing up during work, that’s the least likely explanation.

How could you possibly know that? Presumably there is a road in front of the factory which other people use, you've said that there are offices near to the factory as well. What is it about the factory workers that makes you think they are the ones responsible? You sound a bit of a snob IMO

If you saw the platform shelter at my station you could think all commuters were necking WKD blue and apple sourz before a day at the office. However, I'm more inclined to put it down to kids meeting in a quiet place in the evening.

No houses nearby. Most of the cans we found were Knights Premium cider which is about 8.5% or Polish beer purchased from a shop selling European brands and that was 10% abv.

You’re making an awful lot of assumptions. Kids don’t drink outside their own houses. Is it really worth it to potentially put a whole load of stress on some factory workers (let’s face it- not the most enjoyable job) when it might not even be anything to do with them? I’m not sure I could live with that karma, especially without concrete evidence.

I am not making assumptions. As a litter picking group we have ideas of what age groups drink what. Plus we have seen these cans I have mentioned above in laybys where truckers stay for a few hours and on the sides of A roads.

The UK has a serious drink drive problem. Why else would you see alcohol cans and bottles tossed on roads miles from homes?

You are also assuming that they’re not allowed to drink during working hours. If they’re getting an extremely boring job done to the required standard, why is it a problem? Have you ever worked in a factory?

Surely you're not advocating drinking alcohol and then operating machinery? Even a boring job should be done sober.
