AIBU to think that Christmas ads should be banned until at least after Halloween?

Yesterday, on the first of September, I saw a billboard ad for mince pies and have been bombarded with online ads for advent calendars of various descriptions. WTAF? We haven’t even got past the autumn equinox, the clocks haven’t changed, what is wrong with people?? When I am world dictator all mentions of Christmas would be banned until 1st December (actual advent), but until then would it be too much to ask to ask retailers to show some restraint at least until the Halloween tat is out of the way?

I was horrified to see quality street all summer in the front entrance of most shops? Must be desperate to make money.

Co op got their mince pies in, next to the Yule logs, which are next to the Halloween spooky iced cup cakes.

That's daft too, mince pies in early September. They're for CHRISTMAS, yet the shelf life of any you buy today will be around 30th September. WHYYYYY? 😫 What is the point of selling them now?!

I hate it. Christmas songs are played from December 1st in this house. The commercialism is tacky and ruins the Christmas spirit 😢

Even our girl Mariah, the Queen of Christmas, tells us the Christmas countdown shouldn't start til 1st November! On this video at the very start you can see the date change from 31st October to 1st November.

I've always thought Christmas ads shouldn't start until after Remembrance Day, actually. That's still six weeks before. As for the argument about early ads needed because of sending stuff abroad, they are never about sending tea-towels to Australia.

The ads showing perfect families round the table and Grandad dozing in his paper hat are nauseating any time before about 23rd December.

People moaning about Xmas stuff in the shops early.

For most people it’s just not any more. But whether you spend the time in religious contemplation or stuffing yourself with chocolate, I think we can all agree that nobody needs to be shopping for it in August or the first week of September.

It very much has seasons. The religions were paganism and Saturnalia. Christianity hijacked it. The advent isn't Christmas, but it's the lead up and both a time of feasting, preparation, or religious contemplation. There isn't one way to do the whole Season. Stir up Sunday was November. I'm generally not arsed either way about Christmas. I'm also not really arsed about shops having Christmas stock on their shelves as you can choose to buy it or ignore it, just as with anything else in the shop.

I don't get the whole wishing your life away though. I can wear shorts and eat a mince pie. I do find it really weird when people claim to just love Christmas so much that they have to put their decorations up the second that Halloween is over, but then drag them down on Boxing Day, when its actually Christmas.

Oh, and I enjoyed the irony of you complaining about the commercialism of Christmas whilst also saying advent starts 1st December. It starts 4 Sundays before Christmas, which this year is 29th November. But I guess actual advent doesn't fit neatly into a little box filled with treats?

What annoys me is that I love Christmas but because I don't want to engage with it and put my tree up etc on Nov 1st, I get all kinds of shit off people about being a Scrooge 😒

In one place I worked, the sales office had a tree up and decorated at the beginning of September with decorations around the room, unfortunately we shared this enormous area and coming into work was a nightmare seeing all this seasonal stuff in your face. They also had a tickertape type electronic reminder of how many selling days the sales team had until Christmas.

By the time I finished work for Christmas, I was heartily sick of the sight of that bloody tree and the decorations along with most of my colleagues. 😡

They are the ones that take down the tree 26/27 Dec.

When I see homes with decs up in Nov either on way to work etc - I guess they are down by those ‘bitty’ days between Xmas and NY. Yep they are

I was in Lidl earlier on. Couple “mince pies already” in that shocking disgust tone.
Then put in a box into their trolley.…..

I don't really think there is anything wrong with selling particular foods year-round if there is a market for them. Mince pies are associated with Christmas but that's just a convention. They're a bit rich and heavy for hot weather but I think we've seen the last of that for some time now.

It’s like hot cross buns. Supermarkets sell the standard ones all year round. Then 2 months before Easter get the different flavours which have been a new thing in the past 4 years. Both savoury (cheese n sun-dried tomatoes- M&S) and sweet

They've been there since August.

Because they think it's all over then, when it's not. It's madness.

They will be the people who take the decorations down saying " I just want my house back" as though the tree and lights etc are some ghastly overstaying relatives.
We take ours down on New Year's Day , TBH we don't put too many up because the cats won't accept the tree and having flame candles isn't safe.
I work the week between and after New Year so it makes sense. They do go up about 10 days before .
