AIBU to think that Christmas ads should be banned until at least after Halloween?

Yesterday, on the first of September, I saw a billboard ad for mince pies and have been bombarded with online ads for advent calendars of various descriptions. WTAF? We haven’t even got past the autumn equinox, the clocks haven’t changed, what is wrong with people?? When I am world dictator all mentions of Christmas would be banned until 1st December (actual advent), but until then would it be too much to ask to ask retailers to show some restraint at least until the Halloween tat is out of the way?

Yes, but Christmas should last longer the other side and everyone should get a good amount of time off whilst decs are up. It’s skewed towards commercialism and should be about family, rest -and if you want it- spiritually.

Let's ban holiday companies advertising summer holidays on New Years Day too then.... You can't police advertising and the Seasons. It's ust how it works.

If it's not for you why let it bother you. Life is too short to get worked up over these things. Just stay out of the Christmas aisles!!

Not a ban, but a large additional tax, and use the money to help homeless and vulnerable people at Christmas and over the winter.

To be fair, there’s another thread on here by someone who put up Christmas lights in the last few days and it’s annoying her neighbour.

I’d ban it till December 1st but I hate the ‘festive season’ and start longing for NYD as soon as the adverts start.

Halloween - fair enough, if that's your thing (I like a bit of pumpkin carving). Then 5 November - traditional and a chance to eat gingerbread. Then 11 November. After that, the run up to Christmas can begin.

I was in a shop in Germany this week and noticed a small display of Christmas biscuits. It was very low key, but even so.

As with anything, people are different. If you don’t like it don’t engage with it, a few adverts/emails and a couple of shelves of mince pies in the shops really doesn’t need to impact you if you don’t want it to. The companies know what they’re doing, this works for them/their bottom line so they will do it, just as the holiday companies advertise summer breaks on Boxing Day.

Essentially shops are starting Christmas in September, so we see Xmas stuff in September,.October, November and December.....four months....that is a THIRD OF A YEAR. That is absolutely ridiculous. Its long, drawn out, desensitises us to Christmas as it is always "there" and for me sucks the joy and magic out of Christmas as it just drags on and on. Even my 17 year daughter who adores Christmas was really taken aback at seeing food on co op and said it's so commercial. It's actually sad.

Seeing Christmas stuff this early really spoils it for me, I'm not big on Christmas although I do have a tree and small decorations and do the Christmas dinner every year but I get sick of the adverts and other stuff you see constantly.

I especially hate that awful Christmas song fest in every shop or on the radio As soon .as I hear Noddy Holder screeching It's Chriiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas, about ten times a day, I feel deeply depressed.

A couple of years ago, I took some time linking the threads about this from 20yrs ago. It's always started as the schools prepare to go back. It's retail. Plenty of people need 3 pay packets to afford Christmas. No point starting to advertise in December when people have been spreading the cost for weeks.

And Christmas is a season for lots of people, not a day. I could ask why people save up for holidays and pay in installments, look forward to it and talk about. Because they like it presumably.

There are plenty of things I don't want to buy in the supermarket. I just ignore them.

The chocolate is already in the shops tbh the chocolate tubs have never been OUT of the shops this year like who would buy Christmas chocolate at a premium price in a heatwave?

I know people like to moan about this, but most people i know spread the cost of xmas over three months pay.

I like to be done and wrapped by December, so I can relax and enjoy the run up without a stressful to-do-list, so started planning present lists last month and I actually bought my first couple of stocking fillers this week. I'll wait until nearer the time for big items or ideas that might change. But I have a list I add ideas to and watch for price drops, and will buy when I see a bargain.

I don't buy toys for DC often, and I love planning what to get them, and finding surprises and ideas they will like. So, the adverts are for me, sorry!
