Any other London folk mortified by the Notting Hill carnival? Hundreds of arrests, lewd behaviour, vulgarity and litter. It does not represent my culture. It’s an embarrassment.

Football is a ticketed event, carnival is not. Football fans are coralled and marshalled into their seats.

Maybe carnival goers can say the same about you.

For 2 million people the number of arrests are quite low and just as described in previous posts just imagine how many arrests there would be if 2 million football fans were in a predefined and confined space. A lot more.

Additionally, 60+ of the arrests were due to 'facial recognition tech' and this knowledge might actually put off those with criminal 'tendencies' from attending future Carnivals.

Is there a way to reduce Anti social behavior and crime without stopping it altogether?

Of the arrests this year nearly 200 were people who were arrested BEFORE they even got to Carnival or had committed a crime - people identified as troublemakers using facial recognition before they even got there. Not people who were arrested for crimes actually at Carnival - but are included in the numbers.

The police also used to put orders on gang members on Brixton preventing them from travelling on Carnival weekend.

And - there really wasn't that much crime this weekend, given the numbers and that it is a free unticketed event,

It is just ongoing cant and stereotype fuelling the outrage.

Oasis at Wembley last year wasn’t “horrendous”. In fact it was a perfect example of how kind and generous people can be to each other.

I do think it should be moved, but with something symbolic at the same time at Notting hill to retain the historic link , so it’s not seen as being evicted from the area, but also accept its grown to such a scale it now deserves a location where it can be held safely.

I lived in London for years, when I lived near by (Holland Park) I went to carnival, walking distance, it was awful, I got caught up in a fight, nothing to do with me, I was running away and was hit with a large glass bottle.

No toilets, people selling drugs, just awful. My friends who still live local go on holiday

Here is a statement from the Met police put out this morning. There were 443 arrests at the event and 193 arrests on the approaches to the event for a total of 636 arrests

UPDATE: Notting Hill Carnival policing operation

Final update - Tuesday 1 September

The total number of arrests as part of the Notting Hill Carnival policing operation this year has been confirmed as 636.

242 arrests took place on Sunday and 394 on Monday.

193 arrests took place on the approaches to the event, with the remainder taking place within the event footprint.

Offences included possession and supply of drugs, assaults (including assaults on emergency workers), possession of weapons, sexual offences and public order offences.

The use of live facial recognition technology was expanded this year, leading to 214 alerts, 121 arrests and 86 registered sex offenders being stopped and spoken to. Seven registered sex offenders were found to be breaching their conditions or notification requirements and were arrested.

Stop and search was used extensively as part of the proactive policing approach. It resulted in 68 weapons, including a handgun, being found.

We have a ethnic large carnival which takes up an entire weekend and is in a park about a mile from me. For years the nearby residents have been petitioning the council to restrict the noise and the hours. Now they have finally done so the action just moves to nearby streets where there are fights and stabbings. The noise is such that you can hear it above the TV with both doors and windows closed and even ear plugs in. I always go and stay with a relative for that weekend. I feel I am being driven out of my home for the sake of other people's so called "music".

I think one of the big differences between Notting Hill and other festivals is the presence of weapons. The police themselves said of this year's carnival that

Nobody is going to Glastonbury or Download with a machete or a handgun.

It sounds absolutely appalling. Feel sorry for everyone that’s expected to just put up with it. Really hate the ‘well you shouldn’t have moved here’ line as though people should just accept danger and vandalism as the norm.

No matter if people have lived there for decades or have just moved in and whether they live in a millionaire’s home or a more ordinary dwelling, nobody should have to put up with what you’re describing all in the name of someone else’s ‘fun’.

It means absolutely nothing to me. It isn’t my culture at all. My culture is Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Keats, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Dickens, Wilfred Owen, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, P G Wodehouse, Monty Python, Philip Larkin, etc.

The left have been doing all they can to IMPOSE a new identity on me, but I will fight them to my last breath. They beauty of multicultural Britain is that there's something for everyone.

It’s not even vaguely comparable. Life just carries on as normal when there are matches or concerts on. The council give out residents’ parking permits so we can do literally the opposite of what your cousin was advised to do and park by the grounds on match days. There’s no way you’d get all the residents to move their cars and they don’t need to in the first place. It’s a bizarre comparison from people who I suspect have neither been to NH carnival or to a footy match.
