To remove a sentimental middle name from baby’s birth certificate?

I had a baby a little while ago and to appease family I included a middle name in remembrance of my deceased dad that I didn’t really want to. She now has 2 middle
names. Would it be really awful of me to remove it? Like removing him? Or is it a non event? Everyone says middle names don’t matter but it matters to me so surely if they matter so little it shouldn’t matter if i remove it if that makes sense? Just wondering if I’m awful if it take it out!

She's your child and you can do what you want. But, it's likely to make very little difference because unless she really likes it it won't surface very often at all. Mostly just on passport applications.

ClearlyNoIdea · 31/08/2026 19:40

Middle names are a non event in my opinion. You don't go around shouting John Joe Patrick William O'Brien at all times. If you really want to remove it then do so for whatever your reasons are but I would think it's not worth the hassle. When you child gets their passport if they havent got one already it's generally only John Joe O'Brien that goes on it unless you want them all on it.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 31/08/2026 19:40

If it means nothing leave it, or are you removing it to make a point?

ashhhhh2 · 31/08/2026 19:41

I just don’t like the way it sounds. I do have pnd so questioning my judgement over everything if that makes

It seems like a lot of hassle for something that will never be used. You don’t even need to tell him he has two middle names if it bothers you that much!

BlueMum16 · 31/08/2026 19:42

It's only a piece of paper.

Like PP said when you order a passport just drop it. My middle name isn't in my passport or driving licence

PurpleMarshmallowSky · 31/08/2026 19:42

I’d look into if this is going to cause a hassle for your child long term, having to prove their name change with extra documents and always having to explain it. Worth considering.

IdaGlossop · 31/08/2026 19:42

For the sake of your child, leave it. One day, they may be interested to learn of the family link.

DPotter · 31/08/2026 19:44

I'm not sure you would be able to - have done a little digging around and there are mentions of changing a first name following a baptism. If it's possible it has to be within 12 months.

I suggest you contact the local register office and ask.

If they can't change, don't worry - I have 2 middle names but offical organisations such as banks rarely use my first name plus 2 middle names, I just get first & one middle. So you could just give the baby's first name and the middle you prefer

It likely will from family experience . Don’t do it!

seahorsessky · 31/08/2026 19:47

Seems stupid to add it then remove it. If you were willing enough to actually do it, what is th epoint in removing it? That's worse than not honouring him in the first place.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/08/2026 19:48

The name has been given. Removing it, should be the choice of the adult child.

Grumpyoldcat · 31/08/2026 19:49

Leave it. She might like it when she is older. It is HER name not yours.

VanillaIceIceBaby · 31/08/2026 20:03

She will have to declare that she was once previously known as another name for the rest of her life.

HelenaWilson · 31/08/2026 20:07

Exactly what I was going to say. Once the name is given, it belongs to the child. Up to him/her what s/he does with it.

mindutopia · 31/08/2026 20:11

If you don’t like it, then get rid of it. One of mine has two middle names (one a family name) and I DO like it, but it’s a right pain to fit on every official form. I wouldn’t deal with the hassle for a name I didn’t even like.

FTMaz · 31/08/2026 20:12

My understanding is that you can’t amend names once on the birth certificate only the person themselves can do it when they are either 16 or 18

You can apply to do a correction and it’s up to the individual registrar. (In the uk). But the original information will also be on the certificate as well as the correction.

nowimabeliever · 31/08/2026 20:21

Just leave it. You’re overthinking it. In terms of admin/bureaucracy, you would potentially just cause more issues for your child.

VanillaIceIceBaby · 31/08/2026 20:29

Also a correction is £99.

Hohofortherobbers · 31/08/2026 21:21

I think you're overthinking this. Just leave it

CurlewKate · 31/08/2026 21:28

My children have 2 middle names each-all family names. As adults they love the connection with their past. Leave it.

Yes, this does sound like the rumination of a stressed, tired mum who is feeling low.

It really doesn't matter that the name is on the certificate. You don't have to like the sound of it because it need never be uttered. Having it there just as a silent token of acknowledgement of a dead relative is very common. We did it with our children. Their middle names are never used and barely ever recorded. xx

PollyBell · 31/08/2026 21:42

So every time your child is asked have you been known by any other name/s they will have to put this? Why do that to them?

Hankunamatata · 31/08/2026 21:48

I wouldnt bother. Middle names never have to be used
