AIBU to worry my abusive mother will ruin my child's graduation?

Hello all,

I won’t go into the decades of abuse here that I suffered at the hands of both parents, but I will give you a brief overview.

I am an only child to parents who have been physically abusive to each other during my childhood. The divorced each other, then remarried each other two years later, all between the ages of 6-8. To say I seen a lot of things that children shouldn’t see is an understatement.

The abuse towards me was very much emotional and coercive; I had to be tip top all the time, could never be sad or have emotions, had to be respectful regardless of what names they called me, had to agree with them and praise them, keep up appearances etc. There was never any emotional room for me at home, it was always about them.

This continued into my adulthood, I was never allowed to say ‘no’, or express an opinion about anything. My mother is very self involved and would be very jealous if anyone ever paid me a compliment. She would cause arguments between myself and my dad, not that he took much encouragement. I would be told to F off and be called a C U N T, if I ever voiced an opinion or valid point.

My dad graduated a little later in life, I was 13 when he achieved his masters degree, but only my mum was allowed to attend the graduation. They refused to allow me to attend. I was sent to my grandparents house, who actually more or less raised me a lot of the time. I was told how I’d never experience what it felt like, as I wasn’t smart enough.

Moving on, by the time I was 24, I graduated myself and had my own partner and young child. My mum insisted on being there, to the point she refused to babysit so my partner could attend, my dad didn’t even congratulate me. I actually graduated with a higher grade and that never went down well. During the day she was front and centre of everything and actually made me feel embarrassed.

I’ve now not spoken to them in 7 years. A lot more has happened over the years and the abuse never subsided, even into my 30’s. I’d built a lovely life for myself and my children, worked hard and provided well both physically and emotionally.

My eldest seen how they were with me for years, and I was so conditioned and afraid to stand up for myself, after being run into the ground my entire life. Never allowed to make a noise, accept praise, compliments, stand out. We eventually would only see them every couple of months, but that would lead to complaints of me being a bad daughter and preventing them seeing their grandchildren.

I eventually stopped speaking to them after they both physically assaulted me about 6 years ago, as id finally started standing up for myself. I have had the most horrible lies told about me and have been bullied by other family members, to which I have stood my ground. I have been threatened with solicitors if I speak out against them. Myself and my children are happy and have a good life, with my confidence never being so high.

My eldest child is due to graduate next year. I am so incredibly proud of them and it will be the proudest moment of my life. Myself and my other child will be attending, as my ex husband now lives abroad and doesn’t have a strong bond with our children.

We are all really looking forward to the day. The issue is, my mother has now begun emotionally blackmailing my eldest, who doesn’t think too highly of her anyway. They are always polite and respectful, as they know more lies will be told if not.

They have never visited them in uni, despite them being an hour away. They no longer send a birthday card or call to check up. They had a savings account for them when they reached 18 but then refused to allow them access, saying they’d have to ask for any amount they wished to receive from it, with a reason as to why they wanted it. Luckily I’ve been able to always help out, so they’ve never needed to ask. We frequently get torn down for this also!

It is now to the point they wish to block her but are afraid of what will be said next. I have encouraged them to block her but I also understand why they are worried, as she is genuinely a nasty, twisted woman. Has anyone had any experience of something similar and used a solicitor to prevent them contacting them, or spreading vicious lies and false information?

Over the years it’s gone from me deserving my ex husband having an affair and leaving me with two young children, to me being an abusive mother. They have made claims about my ability to cope, stated they used to have to support me financially because I was unstable, which actually wasn’t true and I used to buy them a lot of things in their home, as well as paying for new furniture for them. My dad isn’t interested which quite a wealthy man and my mother has never worked.

I really don’t want her to cast a shadow over the graduation, or any other happy big days that will come our way. Naturally my dad isn’t interested which I’m actually glad of. I’m so worried that they will show up or cause problems closer to the time. Any advice would be appreciated.

These are all valid points thank you, does anyone have any experience of anything similar? Once the graduation has been I need you to understand how rampant the abuse and lies will become, as she won’t have had her own way. My dad will encourage the victim mentality also. I don’t want to have to worry every time we have a celebration or a victory. I also don’t want to have to live my life constantly worrying she will find things out and spread lies!

Dear god, just STOP. Stop with all of it. Stop worrying, stop living in their shadow, stop being afraid.

I know that’s easier said than done, OP, but the only way to stop these terrible people spreading their tentacles of control and poison into your and your children’s lives is to cut them off. Completely. Block, delete, privatise any SM, give them zero information, stop replying and engaging with them. Bat away any flying monkeys who believe their lies and try to rope you back in. Look up grey rock technique.

Haven’t they done enough? What can you or your children possibly gain from having abusive, aggressive, toxic arseholes intruding on your lives, destroying your peace of mind, emotionally manipulating you and making every special occasion a cause for anxiety rather than celebration? Going no contact is not easy, but will ultimately give you such a sense of freedom and relief that you’ll look back and wonder why you didn’t do it years ago.

If they are blocked from everything it won't affect you? And block any other family over that goes along with them.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:30

Cheers everyone. I will contact the police and seek some advice. Thank you all for your time.

Just to be clear, we’ve offered no flow of information. Obviously the graduation year will take place next year, as they have completed a 3 year degree. They are actually blocked on social media etc.

I also must be clear that I’m sick of living my life afraid to speak in case they try to ruin things. This is what I would like advice and guidance on, would going to a solicitor stop them from seeking out information or threatening to turn up at events they’re not welcome at etc?

My mum did actually ring up the college my child went to, attempting to obtain their results. I do need people to understand how she will actively seek out information that does not apply to her.

I very much doubt it.
A court will sometimes give an injunction against someone who has e.g. been stalking, or an ex, but not for just trying to get information or trying to attend public events.
You could always consult a solicitor, but it may be wasted money.

The issue seems to be that although you have been no contact for 6 years, other family members must be feeding her information, else how did she know what college your child was attending?
You may need to cut contact with other family members who are still in touch with her. Also don't put anything at all on social media.

@TheJoyousHiker I think they are afraid of poking the bear. We have had the most horrific lies told about us and although people say rise above it, it is extremely upsetting when people come back and tell you the disgusting things that have been said. I think the concern is what else she will do, if she doesn’t get her own way. She’s already broken a car window of mine, which I did have her prosecuted for, along with burning my eldest child’s belongings that they had in their home from when they would visit.

I think we all think Jesus what will she do next if she doesn’t get her own way. My eldest has even changed their name on social media. She was sectioned when I was a child so does have issues with unstable mental health, ‘no’ is a big trigger.

Ok, so this does change the situation. If you are fearful for the safety of your family and your property, and are feeling threatened, you probably do need to take professional advice. It may be possible to get a restraining order. She sounds unhinged.

Mumofoneandone · 31/08/2026 11:36

Whilst it may 'poke the bear', I would consider a legal letter to state that she is not to contact you or your children or come anywhere near your property.
Also, any lies she writes or speaks about you will involve legal action (defamation of character/libel etc).
You can then get police/legal process involved as necessary.
If you haven't had counselling to help you work through all of this, then maybe consider that.
There's no easy answers and she'll probably be a nightmare until the day she dies but anything you can do to stand up to her strengthens you!

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:36

@StandingDeskDisco that’s a helpful answer, thank you. I think my eldest updated their information originally because they were simply excited to share they had been accepted into their dream university. They should be able to do so really. This is what I find upsetting, that we have to think of any bit of information we share, because really by doing so, they still have control. I would just like them to be made to stop. It’s as simple as that and that’s all I want.

Just don’t tell them when it is…

Universities have several graduation rates. They won’t know which date it is.

You’re already no contact with them. You don’t need a solicitor. Just block and stop the flow of information.

This - they can’t attend without a ticket and only your child can order one of those. It is usually limited to two guest tickets per graduate with a waitlist for any additional tickets requested. She won’t be able to attend and if in doubt, just tell her an alternative date if she reaches out to ask.

There is no reason she needs to know any of the details - unless your child is communicating with her?
ETA - you need to ensure other family members know nothing, too, including your sister. Then she cannot attend or pitch up in anyway - but even if she did, she wouldn’t have a ticket and therefore be allowed entry. Security at the event would prevent her and if she kicked off they, themselves would call the police.

EnglishRose26 · 31/08/2026 11:41

If your mother already has a criminal record due to her abuse of you, then you can very easily apply for a restraining order. I would go to a solicitor, tell them what you have told us, and they can help you. This is a form of harassment and she can be charged by the police if she continues. I am sorry op, it sounds absolutely horrendous and your dc must be protected.

Please stop sharing any news at all with your relatives. It is getting fed back to her somehow. At some point your dc will want to get married etc, or find new jobs. They should not be living in fear.

moose62 · 31/08/2026 11:42

How do you get the information about the lies and abuse they spread about you if you and your DC haven't spoken to them in 6 years?
Do you have a family member passing on information? If so, tell them that you are not interested and to not pass information on about you either.
Your DC need to block them on everything so that they cannot contact them.
If they still continue to try and distrupt things for you, perhaps speak to a solicitor about the grounds for a contact restraining order.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:43

@EnjoythemoneyJane yes she got a lot worse during menopause also. It has never been easy but that was unexplainable.

@Mumofoneandone yes this is what I was looking for from the post, really anyone who has had lived experience and what their outcome was. I was unsure if I should contact the police or a solicitor. I’d like my children to be able to celebrate their lives freely. Not like me too afraid to make a fuss.

My eldest is looking at proposing next year, when they go with their partner to Canada. I don’t want them having to be worried who they tell or if my parents find out. We live in a town where most people know each other, so no matter how secretive you try to be people do find out things.

Yes this - then when you have a restraining order you simply notify the university in case she turns up.

TheLambtonWorm · 31/08/2026 11:44

As others have said they won't be able to attend without tickets and they're gold dust as it is, so randoms without the link to purchase won't be able to do so.

If your child is worried about this I would actually recommend they talk to their university's welfare team, discuss concerns around her gathering information, the emotional blackmail, the concerns she may show up for graduation. They will be able to work with the events team to ensure she isn't allowed in the venue at all even if she does somehow manage to get in.

@shropshire11 Sorry I did state I’ve had absolutely no contact for 6 years, a year before that I hadn’t spoken to them either.

My youngest child hasn’t seen them in 7 years and they have not reached out to my eldest hardly ever until graduation is approaching. Sorry I thought I did make that clear in my post.

So why do you care what lies these people you have no contact with tell about you?

I think they are afraid of poking the bear.

This is honestly not their burden to carry.

Living their lives is not “poking the bear”.

This sounds like it has all gone on for far too long. Your mum has no power or control over any of you. The only power she has, is the power you are giving to her.

You need to lead by example to your children. If you are not worried, they will won’t be.

Stop worrying about the lies she may tell. No one in their right mind will believe her.

Stop worrying about her reaction to you or your children’s lives or milestones. It’s absolutely none of her business.

If she crosses a line, involve the police.

Otherwise, put her out of your mind. If you are all no contact, there is no need to be worrying about her at all.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:51

@HumberSquid Because when you have been abused all of your life, and then worked endlessly to be better and do better, the thought of being accused of being a child abuser, elderly people abuser, thief and selling myself for money is actually quite sickening. Abusers do not stop once the contact has ended. If anything, they often get worse.

The mental strain that comes from having these people in your life, despite them being cut off is depleting. If anything, it got worse for a while once I ended all contact. Which I always knew would happen. Parental abuse is just as draining as spousal abuse, except I’d had it ingrained in me to take it, or else. I don’t expect people to understand who have never experienced it, and I’m grateful for those that haven’t.

Unfortunately it is nigh on impossible to control the actions of other people.
You cannot "make" her do or not do anything, nor can she be made to stop by anyone else.
All you can do is remove yourself.

Let them say/think/do what they want.

Any family member who is in their orbit and believes everything they say (and can't see their lies/manipulation for themselves) are not worth knowing either.

Free yourself of the shackles of their opinions.

Who gives a fuck what anyone says.

Silence.
Block.
Move on.

Rid yourself of these people.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:59

@StandingDeskDisco no you’re exactly right but she is still obsessed after years of no contact, and shows absolutely no sign of stopping willingly. Which is why I feel she needs some kind of legal action or intervention to prevent this from continuing. I haven’t laid eyes on the woman in 6 years and once is 7. We avoid any shops or restaurants she attends, we don’t attend functions we know she may be at. I don’t even go into my local town on Saturday, as to avoid bumping into her. Personally there’s nothing else I can do to keep us out of the way. It would be lovely to go to town on a Saturday and not have to wonder if I’m going to bump into her and if she’s going to start screaming at me, as she did the last time I seen her.

Thank you for explaining. Gently, maybe this is where therapy comes in, to get these awful, abusive people out of your head now that you've (almost) evicted them from your life. The more they vent their spite about you the less believable they come (I've not been in your position but I've known people like your parents).

Ha have learned this with ex. Never say the actual word "no:"
.if there is a need to respond "that does not work for me sorry"
But everyone should be no contact.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 12:19

@HumberSquid I’m actually fine day-to-day and overall. I don’t need therapy but I do need to be left alone, without the fear of being harassed. It’s actually my mother that needs therapy. She was in an asylum for over a year when I was very young. I personally feel she has undiagnosed bipolar disorder.

@cestlavielife It literally had to be just ‘yes’ constantly. Nothing else. Otherwise it would be something that resembles the terrible twos but adult sized. I think my eldest has come to realise they’re buggered if they keep very light contact, thinking it would keep them sweet, and buggered if they don’t. I’m at a point where I am sick of having to live with them casting some kind of shadow. The only other option is to move away from the town where all my friends and good family are, again that isn’t something we should have to do in order to be left the hell alone.
