AIBU to worry my abusive mother will ruin my child's graduation?

Hello all,

I won’t go into the decades of abuse here that I suffered at the hands of both parents, but I will give you a brief overview.

I am an only child to parents who have been physically abusive to each other during my childhood. The divorced each other, then remarried each other two years later, all between the ages of 6-8. To say I seen a lot of things that children shouldn’t see is an understatement.

The abuse towards me was very much emotional and coercive; I had to be tip top all the time, could never be sad or have emotions, had to be respectful regardless of what names they called me, had to agree with them and praise them, keep up appearances etc. There was never any emotional room for me at home, it was always about them.

This continued into my adulthood, I was never allowed to say ‘no’, or express an opinion about anything. My mother is very self involved and would be very jealous if anyone ever paid me a compliment. She would cause arguments between myself and my dad, not that he took much encouragement. I would be told to F off and be called a C U N T, if I ever voiced an opinion or valid point.

My dad graduated a little later in life, I was 13 when he achieved his masters degree, but only my mum was allowed to attend the graduation. They refused to allow me to attend. I was sent to my grandparents house, who actually more or less raised me a lot of the time. I was told how I’d never experience what it felt like, as I wasn’t smart enough.

Moving on, by the time I was 24, I graduated myself and had my own partner and young child. My mum insisted on being there, to the point she refused to babysit so my partner could attend, my dad didn’t even congratulate me. I actually graduated with a higher grade and that never went down well. During the day she was front and centre of everything and actually made me feel embarrassed.

I’ve now not spoken to them in 7 years. A lot more has happened over the years and the abuse never subsided, even into my 30’s. I’d built a lovely life for myself and my children, worked hard and provided well both physically and emotionally.

My eldest seen how they were with me for years, and I was so conditioned and afraid to stand up for myself, after being run into the ground my entire life. Never allowed to make a noise, accept praise, compliments, stand out. We eventually would only see them every couple of months, but that would lead to complaints of me being a bad daughter and preventing them seeing their grandchildren.

I eventually stopped speaking to them after they both physically assaulted me about 6 years ago, as id finally started standing up for myself. I have had the most horrible lies told about me and have been bullied by other family members, to which I have stood my ground. I have been threatened with solicitors if I speak out against them. Myself and my children are happy and have a good life, with my confidence never being so high.

My eldest child is due to graduate next year. I am so incredibly proud of them and it will be the proudest moment of my life. Myself and my other child will be attending, as my ex husband now lives abroad and doesn’t have a strong bond with our children.

We are all really looking forward to the day. The issue is, my mother has now begun emotionally blackmailing my eldest, who doesn’t think too highly of her anyway. They are always polite and respectful, as they know more lies will be told if not.

They have never visited them in uni, despite them being an hour away. They no longer send a birthday card or call to check up. They had a savings account for them when they reached 18 but then refused to allow them access, saying they’d have to ask for any amount they wished to receive from it, with a reason as to why they wanted it. Luckily I’ve been able to always help out, so they’ve never needed to ask. We frequently get torn down for this also!

It is now to the point they wish to block her but are afraid of what will be said next. I have encouraged them to block her but I also understand why they are worried, as she is genuinely a nasty, twisted woman. Has anyone had any experience of something similar and used a solicitor to prevent them contacting them, or spreading vicious lies and false information?

Over the years it’s gone from me deserving my ex husband having an affair and leaving me with two young children, to me being an abusive mother. They have made claims about my ability to cope, stated they used to have to support me financially because I was unstable, which actually wasn’t true and I used to buy them a lot of things in their home, as well as paying for new furniture for them. My dad isn’t interested which quite a wealthy man and my mother has never worked.

I really don’t want her to cast a shadow over the graduation, or any other happy big days that will come our way. Naturally my dad isn’t interested which I’m actually glad of. I’m so worried that they will show up or cause problems closer to the time. Any advice would be appreciated.

Just don’t tell them when it is…

Universities have several graduation rates. They won’t know which date it is.

You’re already no contact with them. You don’t need a solicitor. Just block and stop the flow of information.

This. No need to justify yourself, or for any legal measures.

HoppityBun · 31/08/2026 11:07

Get your child onside about not having your mother attend. That’s crucial.

Then don’t give her details about graduation except for careful misinformation that you’ve all agreed on.

Loulou4022 · 31/08/2026 11:07

Agree with others just don’t tell them where it is or just say there is only 2 tickets per family and you and your other child are going. In fact I think unis may only offers a limited number of tickets per family anyway? Someone in work with had 3 children graduate 3 different unis and they only had 2 tickets.

OP, my sausage fingers meant I accidentally hit YABU, but wanted to clarify - YANBU!!

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:10

These are all valid points thank you, does anyone have any experience of anything similar? Once the graduation has been I need you to understand how rampant the abuse and lies will become, as she won’t have had her own way. My dad will encourage the victim mentality also. I don’t want to have to worry every time we have a celebration or a victory. I also don’t want to have to live my life constantly worrying she will find things out and spread lies!

Step away from the whole family if lies are being spread and believed about you and your family. Absolutely no loss to any of you.

Encourage your DD to think about what she is gaining by having contact with them. It would be far simpler for your whole family to have no or very little contact with your parents.

Graduations are ticketed so I can’t imagine they would be able to attend unless your DD applies for them. So stop contact and don’t communicate any details at all.

shropshire11 · 31/08/2026 11:10

I’m sorry to read about your sad experiences. I mean this gently, but you have to ask yourself why, given the awful treatment not only of you but also your children, now going back decades, you have not brought things to a natural conclusion and totally cut contact? At some point when we find ourselves in a toxic relationship we have to acknowledge that we ourselves are half of it.

My advice is to make this milestone a wake-up call for you and your children and to cease all contact so you can all move on. Don’t prolong the agony.

CookingNonna · 31/08/2026 11:10

Very sadly the guest numbers to attend a graduation are STRICTLY limited and you will be lucky to get a +2 allocation, let alone 3 tickets. So you are terribly sorry but the university just won’t allow it 🤥 What a shame.

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:11

Key points people are missing is I have had absolutely no contact for 6 years. My eldest child doesn’t hear from them, only now graduation is approaching. My youngest child hasn’t seen them in 7 years.

@shropshire11 Sorry I did state I’ve had absolutely no contact for 6 years, a year before that I hadn’t spoken to them either.

My youngest child hasn’t seen them in 7 years and they have not reached out to my eldest hardly ever until graduation is approaching. Sorry I thought I did make that clear in my post.

Don’t even bother with this. Nutters like the OP’s mother phone up universities and venues to check and then beg. Give absolutely no information at all about the graduation. As a pp said, stop the flow of information.

Thundertoast · 31/08/2026 11:14

OP, it is better to have no family than a family that abuses you or believes an abusers lies about you. Cut contact with your parents and say explicitly and clearly to any other family members 'my parents lie about me so they no longer receive information about my life, so if you hear anything please assume it is a lie' please also understand that your parents cannot take any legal action against you for telling the truth, why do you think that they could? Would it help for you to speak to legal advice yourself for reassurance as they would have no basis for legal action against you based on what you have said here.

Thundertoast · 31/08/2026 11:17

Ah sorry, just seen your update about no contact - the rest of my comment stands though!

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:17

@MatildaTheCat Luckily there’s only one aunty and her family who spend time with them. They are actually very, very similar and I feel they spur each other on if anything.

Most of my family speak to be polite but keep it brief. Myself and my children are close with some of my cousins who have really supported us. There has been times where people have had to shut her down and she’s kicked off and caused a huge scene. Hence why many now keep contact polite but brief.

So how do they know anything about what you are doing or even that the DC is at uni let alone when this graduation might happen? Where are they getting their information about your life? Who are they spreading these lies to? How are the being abusive sti when TYou don’t see them or speak to them??

Let her spread her lies, anyone that genuinely knows you won’t believe her and anyone who does believe her isn’t worth having in your life!!

Cardhey · 31/08/2026 11:21

With all due respect, be a parent and protect your kids. Delete her number from their phones and block her. Do not allow her to have any tickets. She may have fucked up your graduation but you are an adult and need to stop life from repeating.

DysmalRadius · 31/08/2026 11:21

Who is she going to spread lies to?

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:21

Just to be clear, we’ve offered no flow of information. Obviously the graduation year will take place next year, as they have completed a 3 year degree. They are actually blocked on social media etc.

I also must be clear that I’m sick of living my life afraid to speak in case they try to ruin things. This is what I would like advice and guidance on, would going to a solicitor stop them from seeking out information or threatening to turn up at events they’re not welcome at etc?

My mum did actually ring up the college my child went to, attempting to obtain their results. I do need people to understand how she will actively seek out information that does not apply to her.

She can't come. End of. All tickets spoken for.

TheJoyousHiker · 31/08/2026 11:24

Would your DD block her so your mother can’t contact her? She doesn’t need to be harassed by her, particularly in her last year of Unu.

Lomonald · 31/08/2026 11:25

You are so embroiled in the chaos you can't see what is happening , you owe these people bugger all your mother couldn't care less about your childs graduation she just wants the imagined status of attending she will think she had some hand of bringing up this grandchild. Dont invite her stop mentioning it, she is a terrible grandmother your own children deserve better than her.

Lomonald · 31/08/2026 11:29

She sounds absolutely batshit ! Your trauma is making you panic let her contact the university are they going to tell her about your Dd ?

Mirandaforever · 31/08/2026 11:29

@TheJoyousHiker I think they are afraid of poking the bear. We have had the most horrific lies told about us and although people say rise above it, it is extremely upsetting when people come back and tell you the disgusting things that have been said. I think the concern is what else she will do, if she doesn’t get her own way. She’s already broken a car window of mine, which I did have her prosecuted for, along with burning my eldest child’s belongings that they had in their home from when they would visit.

I think we all think Jesus what will she do next if she doesn’t get her own way. My eldest has even changed their name on social media. She was sectioned when I was a child so does have issues with unstable mental health, ‘no’ is a big trigger.
