Could this emotional numbness and rage in my late forties be perimenopause?

To ask you if you recognise any of these ‘symptoms’?

I am late 40’s, I know there is something wrong with me but my GP isn’t historically helpful so I am hoping to narrow down what is happening to me so that I am better armed when I go see them.

It’s long and I’m sorry about that. Hopefully some people recognise some of how I feel and realise it’s difficult so therefore want to help / share experiences.

My period are regular and heavy (all my life this has been the case) but I feel like the way I feel has to be hormonal, otherwise I’m basically a psychopath that has just been masking their whole life. If I am the latter then I obviously need some psychological help and will seek that.

Over the last 2-3 years I have become harder and harder and more and more detached from other people generally. I had lots of empathy when I was younger, felt sorry for others’ etc end now I simply don’t. This makes my life much easier in some ways so I haven’t necessary cared so much but now I realise it’s affecting my relationships. I know some of that is quite general so I’ll give you an example to show what that looks like. If one of my children were upset about something happening at school, say a friendship issue I would have thought about it a lot until it was resolved. Now, I do the right thing and say the right things that I’m obligated to but I don’t actually sit worrying about them or lose sleep over it. If someone told me they were upset I would tell them I’m sorry and offer assistance but I wouldn’t actually care. I’m just doing what I know is socially acceptable so that I’m not found out in order to avoid someone calling me out for not caring. Someone told me about an issue that was making them exceptionally sad earlier and I just felt like it was something really self indulgent to be upset about. When I told my OH he said that anyone would be upset by it and I just couldn’t imagine it upsetting me (I daren’t say what it is because I already know 98% of people would be upset by it). I don’t really want to be around many people, I just want to be at home and find other people pretty annoying in general. This includes immediate relatives (trying not to out myself) but should be people I love unconditionally. I enjoy the company or my sibling but even we aren’t in each others say pockets, a couple of hours chatting a fortnight is plenty for both of us. Im happy to go out and do stuff so it’s not any sort of phobia etc, I just don’t want to be in anyone’s company for more than an hour or so at a time. I find it difficult to know if some of how I feel is due to being a parent for such a long time (surprise child when older ones were becoming independent) so I’m pretty tired or if it’s because my relationship is crap - long term but pretty unhappy on my part. So if my OH says to me they don’t feel well, in my head I say ‘couldn’t happen to a nicer man.’ Or words to that effect but he has been a shit so maybe I wouldn’t feel that way if I were with a man that had actually treated me properly. Same with my sex drive, I don’t fancy it very often at all but my partner has completely let himself go and is difficult to respect for many reasons so I don’t know if this is a part of a bigger problem or if I just needed to get rid of this one a long time ago. I don’t like many men at all, I find them irritating. I see people with their husbands and I just see their flaws. I rarely look at one in a positive light.

I find my children annoying, right now one is going on and on and I just want say ‘Will this story about the toilet ever end?’ I won’t say that, I will smile and nod but I do know I shouldn’t feel this irritated by people I love. But my love doesn’t feel very strong to be honest and then I feel guilty. I don’t look forward to things with them, I pretend to though and say I’ve had a nice time. I lie basically. My OH will ask if I’m excited to go on holiday for example because when he met me I was the most enthusiastic person he had ever met. Now, I internally think ‘yes so excited to spend time together with you boring me, the kids saying Mum x 400 a day, not getting a moment to myself, tidying up after a bedtime x 200 and spending money that I don’t want to.’ There’s no enthusiasm for anything from me, I just pretend. For example, I can’t stand Christmas and how commercial it is but for my older children I was Mrs Claus. I just don’t really look forward to anything. I do sometimes enjoy things but I have had enough of being enthusiastic for everything, I feel
like I’ve done it for too long and just don’t want to anymore. I pretend because I do love my children and don’t want them to suffer because of me. When other adults are exited to do things I find it difficult to relate as nothing really excites me.

The biggest issue is the intense periods of rage that I feel. I could pull a bear apart with my hands when I get these intense periods of rage. I never used to get them, I would get angry and then cry but very infrequently. Now, I can feel it building and just cannot calm down. I am furious I can say nasty things. I don’t do anything to physically hurt anyone but I certainly would like to. On some level I stop myself but I do know that in that moment I want to lash out. It happened yesterday, I was like it for about an hour and afterwards I felt exhausted. I had a migraine and my body was aching.

Did anyone experience anything similar in menopause / perimenopause? I think typing that I sound depressed but I don’t think I am. If you recognise any of this then please tell me what you did that helped. What did you ask for at the surgery? Any therapy that helped? Any tests I could pay for privately?

I am fit and strong for my age, only a minor health condition that is under control. I work but it’s no longer as stressful as it has been in the past so it’s not work burnout.

I think this is one of the most classic descriptions of peri/ menopause I have ever read!

As oestrogen levels crash, you lose all your pro-social conditioning and generally start to not give a crap. It’s normal OP, particularly when you take into account other factors you’ve described (not great partner, overwhelmed by parenting for so long).

It’s a long road, but you need, not necessarily in this order, whatever’s right for you: HRT, carved out time for yourself without parenting or spousal responsibilities, maybe a bit of therapy, fresh air and exercise, maybe something to deal with the anger like running or a boxing class. Or maybe a divorce and a new career. Who knows, only you can work it out.

This is why women detonate their lives in mid life. But it is normal. You need to work out what you want, and you need some time to yourself to get there.

My inner voice says A LOT. Never had HRT (bit older than you) but also aware this intense irritation is not normal.

Wine helps me be less furious but aware this is not a good long term solution.

SunCreamQueenie · 30/08/2026 16:48

You've got it one...completely normal (so I was told while I felt like I was undergoing a personality transplant) HRT will help and if GP says no, go to another. It doesn't need to be this painful xx

GeorgeTheFirst · 30/08/2026 17:11

Oh yes
Yes it could
You might get other issues later. My sleep went to shit in my early 50s. It's better now

Edamummybean · 30/08/2026 17:21

Sounds like peri to me. I stopped GAF as well, hated the people at work, found my family and lovely DH irritating, cried periodically like I did during puberty. I still don’t GAF like I used to but HRT has taken the edge off the seesawing rage, emotional numbness and misanthropy.

I was talking to SIL yesterday. She started HRT recently. She said she wasn’t sure if it was working but BIL was a lot less annoying, so perhaps yes on balance.

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 30/08/2026 17:30

Yes, I hear you. I’m on a lot of HRT and sometimes I just don’t care anymore.
I try my best but it’s hard to sometimes give a shit. Finally got testosterone so I’m hoping for a bit more get and go about me soon ish
Best place for menopause info is a FB group- The HRT truth collective- it’ has useful but short files attached to the group so you don’t have to go digging.

You’re not the only one and I found that exercise does really help- I’m too tired after to get into a teenage fight etc

Good luck

Thank you. I have struggled in the summer holidays as I exercise a lot and haven’t been able to as much due to childcare and it’s definitely made my moods worse.

Thank you. I think part of the problem I have had is that I have enjoyed not caring about my OH as he is borderline abusive and the relief from not caring has overshadowed everything else. However, I now know I need to deal with that separately. I was extremely angry yesterday and my children deserve better.

yes, absolutely this, thank you OP as this is the post I needed to read today.

Teaandtoastfortwo · 30/08/2026 18:06

I feel exactly the same except for the rage part. It’s more like complete apathy. I have a wonderful partner who I feel completely emotionally detached from and act completely irrationally around. Thinking he doesn’t love me or want me and then it starting fights etc

I couldn’t care less about speaking my mind now whereas before I was a total people pleaser. I often feel numb and like I’m masking along and acting the way I know is socially acceptable, but inside I want to hide away.

I do all the right lifestyle things and I’m on HRT but it hasn’t been the panacea I thought it would be. I miss the old me.

GreenFootstool · 30/08/2026 18:10

Yup.

I begged for HRT because my rage was so bad I was afraid I'd end up in prison over road rage or something.... Absolutely scared myself and I'm usually in excellent control of myself and my temper.

I do, however, wish I had this level of "couldn't give a fuck about what others think of me" as a teen / twenty something - I could have taken over the world (or at least not had my first breakdown aged 25).

Yes I’m very careful not to drink / smoke / eat etc as a coping mechanism because I can see how it could become an issue. I would love to smoke lol.

Sorry. Someone mentioned testosterone in an earlier message. I don’t know if that’s something available to you? I don’t know enough about it all to be honest. I just didn’t want to read that and ignore it. I’ve never known a truly good man (BIL is the one exception) so I think you deserve to enjoy your relationship after finding a unicorn so to speak, keep banging on the GP door?

You have described it well.
The good news is that I can tell you confidently after 15 years since this started in my late 40's I give even less of a fxxk about all those things.

I am presently up in MY bedroom, sipping a glass of wine, away from my family.
They can cook some food if they like, but I want to be alone listening to gentle jazz music in peace.
I crave peace and quiet and most things and people irritate me these days.
I feel the numbness too.
But as long as they leave me the hell alone, I will be fine.
Many of my friends feel the same.

I did feel a bit like this initially. I almost enjoyed the lack of giving a shit. The problem is the rage and also that I have quite a young family. If it were just the eldest ones I wouldn’t care so much but I don’t want to subject an under 10 to it. I want to be left alone.

Thank you. I’ve recently had my dose changed but other than bleeding every day I’ve not noticed a change in my mood! They haven’t discussed testosterone yet but does that not make you more angry? 😂

Epdrenching · 30/08/2026 19:51

I didn't go on HRT because of the press at the time.
I did take a Vitamin B complex supplement, a Starflower supplement which really helped my anger levels.
Ashwagandha has been amazing for my mood wings and magnesium for general well being.
Stress increased my hot flushing and my irritation.
After about 3 weeks on the above I definitely felt calmer.
You need to take a few hours a week to yourself too.
Tennis really helped my mood.

😂 you would think so wouldn’t you? But men don’t seem to lose their libido so maybe it’s more nuanced than we understand. Bleeding every day is rough, no wonder you’re irritable. I feel pissed off tor you!

I went to my GP in my mid 40’s because the sheer white rage I felt at times was quite scary. I felt like it was almost an out of body thing. I was told it was probably too early for peri but looking back, I’m pretty sure it was. The rage has calmed down now at 51, but mainly because I simply don’t GAF about anything. I pretend to, of course, but I actually don’t. I just want to be left the fuck alone most of the time. I’m not on HRT and not planning on it in the near future - mainly because I don’t GAF, that I don’t GAF anymore 🤣

Having regular periods doesn't mean anything in relation to peri really, so don't let that fool you or your GP.

After 45 HRT should be prescribed on symptoms alone. Do not be fobbed off with a blood test and hormone 'checks' unless that is needed to rule out other conditions, eg thyroid (nothing you have written suggests it's anything like this).

The conversation should be 'I'd like to try HRT to see if it alleviates my symptoms' because there is only one way to find out and if it doesn't then you and your GP know. It should not be you need to pass some kind of test or threshold to try it. If they are still being funny ask to be referred to a menopause clinic or someone at the practice with more specialised knowledge.

Testosterone is often harder to come by but you'd want to try HRT first anyway. (I don't know why testosterone isn't automatically categorised as HRT given it's another hormone but it usually just seems to mean oestrogen and progesterone).

I've never had the rage. I'm child free so haven't had years of people taking from me or my oestrogen dropping and my maternal instinct failing me (didn't have it to start with 🤣) but I did have serious anhedonia and know how much hormones affect your mental state.
