Could this emotional numbness and rage in my late forties be perimenopause?

Hyperbolically · 30/08/2026 16:06

To ask you if you recognise any of these ‘symptoms’?

I am late 40’s, I know there is something wrong with me but my GP isn’t historically helpful so I am hoping to narrow down what is happening to me so that I am better armed when I go see them.

It’s long and I’m sorry about that. Hopefully some people recognise some of how I feel and realise it’s difficult so therefore want to help / share experiences.

My period are regular and heavy (all my life this has been the case) but I feel like the way I feel has to be hormonal, otherwise I’m basically a psychopath that has just been masking their whole life. If I am the latter then I obviously need some psychological help and will seek that.

Over the last 2-3 years I have become harder and harder and more and more detached from other people generally. I had lots of empathy when I was younger, felt sorry for others’ etc end now I simply don’t. This makes my life much easier in some ways so I haven’t necessary cared so much but now I realise it’s affecting my relationships. I know some of that is quite general so I’ll give you an example to show what that looks like. If one of my children were upset about something happening at school, say a friendship issue I would have thought about it a lot until it was resolved. Now, I do the right thing and say the right things that I’m obligated to but I don’t actually sit worrying about them or lose sleep over it. If someone told me they were upset I would tell them I’m sorry and offer assistance but I wouldn’t actually care. I’m just doing what I know is socially acceptable so that I’m not found out in order to avoid someone calling me out for not caring. Someone told me about an issue that was making them exceptionally sad earlier and I just felt like it was something really self indulgent to be upset about. When I told my OH he said that anyone would be upset by it and I just couldn’t imagine it upsetting me (I daren’t say what it is because I already know 98% of people would be upset by it). I don’t really want to be around many people, I just want to be at home and find other people pretty annoying in general. This includes immediate relatives (trying not to out myself) but should be people I love unconditionally. I enjoy the company or my sibling but even we aren’t in each others say pockets, a couple of hours chatting a fortnight is plenty for both of us. Im happy to go out and do stuff so it’s not any sort of phobia etc, I just don’t want to be in anyone’s company for more than an hour or so at a time. I find it difficult to know if some of how I feel is due to being a parent for such a long time (surprise child when older ones were becoming independent) so I’m pretty tired or if it’s because my relationship is crap - long term but pretty unhappy on my part. So if my OH says to me they don’t feel well, in my head I say ‘couldn’t happen to a nicer man.’ Or words to that effect but he has been a shit so maybe I wouldn’t feel that way if I were with a man that had actually treated me properly. Same with my sex drive, I don’t fancy it very often at all but my partner has completely let himself go and is difficult to respect for many reasons so I don’t know if this is a part of a bigger problem or if I just needed to get rid of this one a long time ago. I don’t like many men at all, I find them irritating. I see people with their husbands and I just see their flaws. I rarely look at one in a positive light.

I find my children annoying, right now one is going on and on and I just want say ‘Will this story about the toilet ever end?’ I won’t say that, I will smile and nod but I do know I shouldn’t feel this irritated by people I love. But my love doesn’t feel very strong to be honest and then I feel guilty. I don’t look forward to things with them, I pretend to though and say I’ve had a nice time. I lie basically. My OH will ask if I’m excited to go on holiday for example because when he met me I was the most enthusiastic person he had ever met. Now, I internally think ‘yes so excited to spend time together with you boring me, the kids saying Mum x 400 a day, not getting a moment to myself, tidying up after a bedtime x 200 and spending money that I don’t want to.’ There’s no enthusiasm for anything from me, I just pretend. For example, I can’t stand Christmas and how commercial it is but for my older children I was Mrs Claus. I just don’t really look forward to anything. I do sometimes enjoy things but I have had enough of being enthusiastic for everything, I feel
like I’ve done it for too long and just don’t want to anymore. I pretend because I do love my children and don’t want them to suffer because of me. When other adults are exited to do things I find it difficult to relate as nothing really excites me.

The biggest issue is the intense periods of rage that I feel. I could pull a bear apart with my hands when I get these intense periods of rage. I never used to get them, I would get angry and then cry but very infrequently. Now, I can feel it building and just cannot calm down. I am furious I can say nasty things. I don’t do anything to physically hurt anyone but I certainly would like to. On some level I stop myself but I do know that in that moment I want to lash out. It happened yesterday, I was like it for about an hour and afterwards I felt exhausted. I had a migraine and my body was aching.

Did anyone experience anything similar in menopause / perimenopause? I think typing that I sound depressed but I don’t think I am. If you recognise any of this then please tell me what you did that helped. What did you ask for at the surgery? Any therapy that helped? Any tests I could pay for privately?

I am fit and strong for my age, only a minor health condition that is under control. I work but it’s no longer as stressful as it has been in the past so it’s not work burnout.

Having regular periods doesn't mean anything in relation to peri really, so don't let that fool you or your GP.

After 45 HRT should be prescribed on symptoms alone. Do not be fobbed off with a blood test and hormone 'checks' unless that is needed to rule out other conditions, eg thyroid (nothing you have written suggests it's anything like this).

The conversation should be 'I'd like to try HRT to see if it alleviates my symptoms' because there is only one way to find out and if it doesn't then you and your GP know. It should not be you need to pass some kind of test or threshold to try it. If they are still being funny ask to be referred to a menopause clinic or someone at the practice with more specialised knowledge.

Testosterone is often harder to come by but you'd want to try HRT first anyway. (I don't know why testosterone isn't automatically categorised as HRT given it's another hormone but it usually just seems to mean oestrogen and progesterone).

I've never had the rage. I'm child free so haven't had years of people taking from me or my oestrogen dropping and my maternal instinct failing me (didn't have it to start with 🤣) but I did have serious anhedonia and know how much hormones affect your mental state.

Very helpful - thank you!

Just to say, I have an autoimmune condition that has caused this type of emotional dysfunction. This wasn't diagnosed until three years ago (I am 64). But I think it's a mistake to think these issues are always caused by menopause (which may be why PPs report that HRT hasn't always helped them). Unfortunately my GP didn't listen to me when I started explaining different symptoms and I was seriously fobbed off for 14 years. The anger and wanting to be on my own was the main problem but of course nobody really paid any attention to that! You mention that you have a younger child - my issue was definitely triggered by having my son aged 40 (although has caused similar issues throughout my life). So I just wanted to say, keep an open mind...

Do you mind saying what it is? I have a lifelong condition but apparently they’re happy with the results of my bloods.

Graves Disease. And bloods may LOOK ok, but the antibodies that cause it don't get tested. It affects many more things in the body but doesn't get diagnosed until your thyroid goes out of whack - if they even notice that! You have to be your own doctor these days apparently 😕

mindutopia · 31/08/2026 11:27

Do you actually have something to be pissed off about though? I hate all this chalking every feeling up to perimenopause as if it isn’t acceptable for women to just feel rage.

I can’t say I felt exactly like this, but I did go through a phase around 40 of being pretty angry at my family and my job. My family was pretty dysfunctional and caused a lot of pain that finally bubbled up. I also felt miserable in my job, in a career that required many many years of training and qualifications, that I was supposed to feel grateful to have.

There was nothing wrong with me. It’s just my life was something to be angry about!

I stopped giving a shit what other people thought. I went NC with my family. Got some therapy, which was hugely helpful. I stopped drinking, which was a big one, I don’t feel those big lows anymore that you get even after drinks on a weekend that carries on all week. I left my job. What a relief. I don’t feel angry and miserable anymore. I feel happy and optimistic. There was nothing wrong with my hormones. I’m at the tail end of perimenopause now (1 period this year) and never needed HRT. It was literally that my life was making me unhappy and I needed to address decades of baggage. I did and I feel much better.

MrsMorrisey · 31/08/2026 11:36

Sounds pretty normal to me. I can’t take anything tho cos I’ve had breast cancer.
There is nothing wrong with you, it’s peri.
It’s very full on.

Disturbia81 · 31/08/2026 11:40

Get on hrt. Sorted my friends right out and they feel their normal selves again. Just like the rage we feel in pmt, it’s hormonal but can be sorted, just get those hormones replaced

Oh this is very interesting! I have hypothyroidism. That’s the opposite isn’t it?

Yes I do frankly. And that makes it very difficult to know exactly what the cause is.

I do not have an easy life and without going into loads of detail I imagine if I did on here then many people would say there’s no wonder I’m angry and stressed. But then because a lot of the things that are hard were my choice I feel a huge responsibility and lots of guilt. The rage is quite new though.

Kind of but they're closely related - although Graves Rage is a well documented thing 😂 and I definitely know I have it! So there may be a way that Hashimotos affects your thought processes, just like Graves does? Interesting isn't it....

Mooseylooseyloo · 31/08/2026 16:38

This is exactly how I am, I could have written this myself! I lack so much empathy for everyone now, im short tempered, emotionally numb. I started on Ad's and while it has helped wirh my anxiety is still feel the same numbness. For about 2 years now I have withdrawn from everyone around me, ended a relationship, not enjoying anytging anymore. I am 44 and my GP has not even mentioned peri menopause he instead said ive got an anxiety disorder.

Was there a trigger for this at the start, death of a family member/close friend, viral illness, any other emotional or physical stress?

I did feel a bit like this initially. I almost enjoyed the lack of giving a shit. The problem is the rage and also that I have quite a young family. If it were just the eldest ones I wouldn’t care so much but I don’t want to subject an under 10 to it. I want to be left alone.

I had similar and it prompted me to get HRT. It’s not a big switch it’s quite subtle, but it helps. I feel positive generally and the rage has been lost somewhat.

EasternStandard · 31/08/2026 16:46

edwinbear · 30/08/2026 21:19

I went to my GP in my mid 40’s because the sheer white rage I felt at times was quite scary. I felt like it was almost an out of body thing. I was told it was probably too early for peri but looking back, I’m pretty sure it was. The rage has calmed down now at 51, but mainly because I simply don’t GAF about anything. I pretend to, of course, but I actually don’t. I just want to be left the fuck alone most of the time. I’m not on HRT and not planning on it in the near future - mainly because I don’t GAF, that I don’t GAF anymore 🤣

I think it’s pretty normal. Just wanting to be left alone etc

Part of hormones and age. I don’t mind any of it now as it fits with what you say but I do use HRT.

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/08/2026 17:09

OP, I feel very similar. Reading your OP made me feel like I'm not alone. It may be peri. I am 53 but my periods are only just becoming irregular. This year I really didn't want to go on holiday as couldn't be bothered to organise everything and frankly would rather spend that money on other things like the house or garden. In the end I did book something more low maintenance but I didn't really want to be there. Last Christmas I suggested we dump presents as I just didn't want to think about and buy them.

I also have a long and difficult marriage. I don't have young children but I do have a young adult (nearly 21) who is neurodiverse and not working, not studying, not signing on and earlier this year was suicidal. I have twins applying to uni this term and I haven't done anything to help because I just feel constantly overwhelmed. I miss the young children age. My DC are turning 21 and 18 in two months and I've done nothing at all to make it special.

I'm sure there is some peri going on but also very real difficulties. DH finally on board with dealing with our marriage. I hope this will help me feel better. I do actually want to do that, so that is one thing. I do think a long and difficult marriage just erodes so so much in you and the build up becomes crippling emotionally. You sound like you've stopped feeling because you've felt so much negativity for so long that your body and mind can't do it anymore.

If your DH is borderline abusive, HRT is not going to make that go away and neither should it. I think you are very likely depressed from it so I'm interested that you say you're not. I would say addressing your marriage is essential alongside exploring medication or HRT but you don't want to get to a place where things are just about tolerable. You deserve happiness, joy, excitement and all the positive feelings, as do I!

Plmnki · 31/08/2026 17:40

Go to a private GP or clinic, or see a gyn privately, or order a low dose of starter HRT from the Boots private website. I did this and within 48 hrs of starting the medication I felt human again. It was transformational.

don’t let the NHS GP fob you off! Go elsewhere. It’s life saving tbh.

Hellohelga · 31/08/2026 17:49

Yes totally peri. I could have written it myself, except that I have a good marriage, so I find everyone gets on my nerves after a while, apart from DH. You need to see a gp for poss hrt and citalopram - I have both. And you need to slow down, be kind to yourself, find some you time to relax and do what makes you happy. And maybe get divorced.

Easymu · 02/09/2026 06:24

Oh god, mate, I totally get this. the emotional numbness and rage combined with a not-very-helpful GP is just bloomin' exhausting. I was in a proper mess too and ended up just running my symptoms through elenixia – it actually highlighted a few things I hadn't even considered about perimenopause that were definitely relavent for me. hope you get it sorted soon.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/09/2026 10:36

Ive been on HRT for nearly two years. It does help a lot but I definitely give less of a fuck still compared to my 30s and younger.Im 46.

AuntieBiotics · 02/09/2026 10:41

The HRT does improve the lack of caring and interest in other people to some extent, it has for me definitely and my relationships with my family and close friends has improved. Partly because I am less cross and volatile about everything and less likely to get into a shouting match with teenagers, I am more inclined to just let it go.

But on the other hand I am definitely less of a people pleaser than I used to be and far more able to say no and not feel bad about it. I also find that I have less bandwith to take on other people's issues and worries, that is for them to deal with, not me.

Thechickenhasmypillow · 02/09/2026 10:57

Teaandtoastfortwo · 30/08/2026 18:06

I feel exactly the same except for the rage part. It’s more like complete apathy. I have a wonderful partner who I feel completely emotionally detached from and act completely irrationally around. Thinking he doesn’t love me or want me and then it starting fights etc

I couldn’t care less about speaking my mind now whereas before I was a total people pleaser. I often feel numb and like I’m masking along and acting the way I know is socially acceptable, but inside I want to hide away.

I do all the right lifestyle things and I’m on HRT but it hasn’t been the panacea I thought it would be. I miss the old me.

This was me
Apathy and then mood swings
I adore my other half, but I just became so "meh" about him. I became "meh" about everything.
Hrt has made me softer and more caring again
Also, it's made my periods bearable!!

Williteverrainagain · 02/09/2026 12:51

I got the rage thing as well OP. People could just be innocently walking down the street and I would feel so irritated by them. I once had an argument with my husband and my voice was totally demonic, like something from a horror movie. It was quite scary.

In the end I walked into the GP surgery and basically said you need to give me something before I kill someone or get divorced. She put me on Fluoxetine (not popular on here) and that resolved it.

Since then I have had many other symptons and am now on HRT as well and life is pretty much back to normal.

RoutineQueen3 · 02/09/2026 12:52

Peri 100%!! Welcome to the club

TealScroller · 02/09/2026 13:10

Oh 100% I'm 47, on HRT which hasn't made a huge difference but my periods are still regular though shorter duration. I'm wracked with anxiety on a daily basis but also feel like I just want to lie down all the time. Weight gain, aches, lack of interest in anything, feeling depressed and rage that I can hardly keep inside. I'm hoping it passes soon.
