To say something or not?

New neighbours moved into the flat next door earlier this year. A nice couple with 2 boys. I haven't had too much interaction with them, just friendly greetings when we meet. In general, you can't hear much noise from next door but what I am hearing is him vomiting loudly almost every morning - so much so that it wakes me up. What I have noticed is is doesn't happen if they have overnight guests, which I do see them coming/ leaving. He's a nice guy, doesn't ever seem to be under the influence of anything. He is very slim.
It's becoming quite annoying to be woken by this or hearing it every morning. I don't know whether to say something or not?

You really shouldn’t have to live with horrible noises.

Why? Genuinely, why do you think this is true? It’s not.

OP does have to live with it because living with reasonable noise, and bodily functions are absolutely reasonable noise, is what happens when you live in a flat.

It might not be nice to live with, but it’s absurd to just state you shouldn’t have to put up with normal human things just because they’re not particularly nice.

Anyone saying they’d say something was either not raised properly or are just playing the big man for mumsnet. It would be so ridiculously rude to comment on this.

I’d rather have to listen to a vomitty neighbour than have a nobhead next door.

Okay, I accept that. That's all I was asking. I won't say anything.

Has it occurred to you he may be ill and having treatment like chemo or radiotherapy? I'm sure he would rather not be vomiting constantly!

This is so inappropriate it's unreal.

I’d say she’s got an excellent point, the poor kids!! Not at all inappropriate

I don't think he can do anything about it.
It's not like he is playing loud music or shouting and swearing.
It's something he has no control over.

If you mentioned it this would only cause embarrassment.
I'm assuming he is in the bathroom. Where else could he vomit?

If it was deliberate noise then fair enough, but it's clearly something he can't control. It would be like complaining about a neighbour crying or sneezing.
It sounds like the poor guy has enough to deal with.

VenusThighTrap · 26/08/2026 10:28

Poor bloke. Don’t say anything and definitely don’t say you think you heard a fox vomiting, what a bonkers suggestion!

Mulledjuice · 26/08/2026 10:32

You could absolutely check in on them if it were coming from a place of empathy. But it doesn't sound like that's where youre coming from.

Read the thread....here we are 3 pages on and the OP stayed she would not say anything about three posts after the start of the thread.
Here everyone is still wittering on.
Including me.
What the hell is Mumsnet for, except talking into a vacuum.

This is a constant problem, people don’t read OPs posts. Some of them barely read the OP. You don’t have to read every single response, but the bare minimum is all of OPs posts.

Well, above my bedroom there's a flat and they've installed an ensuite bathroom. Someone new moved in and started regularly vomiting at 4am, with over the top/exaggerated vomiting moans, followed by lots of "oh my Gods".

I knocked on their door eventually, during the day, and did politely say that, if they weren't aware my bedroom was below and sound carries, and I'm sorry someone has been unwell but to please be aware, the moaning and shouting accompaniment woke me up every time.

It's been quiet ever since.

I'd try knocking as maybe they'd be mortified if others were hearing it. It's possible to vomit without the whole world/next door hearing.
